Welcome to the National Equestrian Centre at
Ermelo in The Netherlands for the Longines
FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses 2016. This is always
a highly prestigious event, and the move to
the Dutch venue coincides with a three-year
sponsorship deal with the FEI’s Top Partner,
Longines. The Swiss watch brand becomes
the Official Partner and the Official Watch
of the Championships in which the most
promising 5-year-old, 6-year-old and 7-yearold dressage horses are awarded medals
of distinction.
The success of these Championships in highlighting future talent has long been evident,
and the quality of this year’s entry is guaranteed to be extra-special. A new selection
process will admit only young horses that
have produced results of at least 70 percent,
with the result confirmed by the nominating
National Federation.

The 2014 champion 5-year-old, Sezuan 2,
claimed the 6-year-old title for Germany’s
Dorothee Schneider last August. And the Danish Warmblood stallion, who remains unbeaten
in his short career so far, then followed his
back-to-back double by claiming the 6-yearold title at Perl (GER) the following month.
The Fassbinder x Romanov Blue Hors mare
Fiontini claimed gold in the 5-year-old division
with Spain’s Severo Jesus Jurado Lopez in the
saddle while silver went to another mare with
the same genetic bloodline, Fiontina ridden by
Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand. It is an indication of the quality and potential of the horses
rising to the top in the modern sport that
multiple world-record-breaking athlete Charlotte Dujardin from Great Britain described
these two rising stars a few months earlier as
“simply incredible!”
#TwoHearts which celebrates the partnerships
between a rider and a horse is what makes our
sport so unique and it is through events such
as these that we promote our key partner and
unique selling point in the sports world. I encourage all those present to join in the #TwoHearts conversations and share your stories
so that the magic of our sport can resonate
around the world.
Longines will provide its know-how in scoring
and data handling this week, and the company’s Vice President and Head of International Marketing, Juan-Carlos Capelli, says it
is “particularly exciting” to be associated with
the event. It’s a perfect match for the creators
of beautiful timepieces because, as he says,
“dressage perfectly illustrates elegance, which

It is WBFSH and FEI policy that hosting the
FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses shall rotate between
different countries. This year the event takes
place in Ermelo for the first time and I am
sure that the show is in the best possible
hands with the new organizer, Studbook
KWPN and the KNHS, the Royal Dutch
Equestrian Federation.
The participation in these Championships
results in the collaboration between the national sports- and breeding organisations, as
the selection of horses is made by the national
breeding organisations under WBFSH and the
respective National Federations. In this way,
the Championships help to facilitate the integration between breeding and sport - also at
the national level.
The World Breeding Dressage Championships
for Young Horses proves that the breeding of
horses has increasingly become an international phenomenon. The very open European
boarders have resulted in and will continue to
result in an explosivedevelopment in breeding.
Horse breeding has undergone a very quick
and powerful quality development. This development may in time result in too much
uniformity and a reduction in the gene pool

– something that we must be aware of. At this
point, however, there is every reason to be
pleased with the quality of the young horses
that have found their way to the beautiful and
vibrant show grounds in Ermelo.

place in the Netherlands. We are honoured to
be awarded with the responsibility to organise these prestigious World Championships.
An exciting challenge, because the competition in Verden always guaranteed beautiful
sports combined with a great ambiance. We
hope you will enjoy the program we have prepared on our magnificent accommodation
situated in the centre of the Netherlands, the
National Equestrian Centre.

The World Breeding Dressage
Championships for Young Horses
in Ermelo will be at least as fun and interesting as the previous editions in Verden. As a
matter of fact, we will add another dimension
to the Championships with a new category:
the 7-year-old horses.
“We as judges will surely enjoy all the young
horses. I am excited to see what horses will
make their appearance in the arena. Two-time
winner Woodlander Farouche (Furst Heinrich
x Dimaggio) gave me goosebumps in Verden,
that indicated perfectly how much I liked his
performance.
The jury will award every horse a total of five
grades for the basic abilities: the walk, trot,
canter, submission and perspective. A rider
scores points with a horse that shows three
fantastic gaits, is trained in accordance with
the Skale der Ausbuilding and is happy and
willing to work. In other words, we want to see
horses that are happy athletes.

Judging young horses is different from the way
you are used to as a Grand Prix judge. In a
dressage test, you judge the test individually,
from the position you are located. At the World
Breeding Dressage Championships for Young
Horses we asses the dressage talents as a
team. The jury panel will give a joint result,
it’s about the consensus between the judges
and that requires commitment and teamwork
with your fellow judges. In my opinion working
together adds value and I am looking forward
to take my seat in the arena.”

als het wereldkampioenschap de afgelopen jaren in Verden was. Sterker nog, we
gaan een nieuwe dimensie toevoegen aan
het Wereldkampioenschap met de nieuwe
categorie: de zevenjarige paarden.
“Het staat buiten kijf dat we als jury gaan
genieten van de paarden. Ik vind het spannend om te zien welke paarden we in de baan
gaan krijgen. Van tweevoudig wereldkampioen
Woodlander Farouche (Furst Heinrich x Dimaggio) kreeg ik in Verden echt kippenvel, zo
mooi vond ik het.
De jury geeft in totaal vijf cijfers voor de
basisaanleg van een paard: voor de stap,
draf, galop, submission (gehoorzaamheid /
meewerkendheid) en perspective, oftewel
perspectief / potentieel. Je scoort als ruiter
punten met een paard dat drie fantastische
gangen laat zien, volgens het Skala der
Ausbuildung (skala van de africhting) is opgeleid en graag wil werken. Happy athletes dus,
dát zijn de paarden die we graag willen zien.
Het jureren van jonge paarden gaat op een
andere wijze dan je als Grand Prix-jurylid gewend bent. Bij een dressuurproef beoordeel
je de proef individueel, vanuit de positie waar
je zit. Voor het Wereldkampioenschap voor
jonge paarden jureer je de dressuurbeloften
als team. We komen als jurypanel met één
gezamenlijke uitslag van de jonge paarden, het
gaat het om consensus tussen de jury’s en dat
vereist commitment van en samenwerking met
de collega-juryleden. Ik zie het samenwerken
als een meerwaarde en verheug me er op om
aan de baan te zitten.”

The World Breeding Dressage
Championships for Young Horses
is a unique opportunity for the Netherlands:
we can present our breeding and sports in
our own country, at our own National Equestrian Centre where sports and breeding come
together with the KWPN and KNHS at one
location. I am very excited and proud that
the Netherlands has the chance to organise
this. I have received medals in Germany and
I hope to achieve this in my own country as
well. It is a true World Championship where
the best young horses of all age categories
compete and it is a challenge to participate
with one of my talents.

Het Wereldkampioenschap voor
jonge dressuurpaarden is een
unieke kans voor Nederland: we kunnen
onze fokkerij en sport presenteren in ons
eigen land, op ons Nationaal Hippisch
Centrum waar sport en fokkerij verenigd
zijn met KWPN en KNHS op één terrein.
Ik vind het ontzettend leuk en ben er heel
trots op dat Nederland het mag organiseren.
Ik heb in Duitsland medailles mogen halen en
hoop dat ook in eigen land te mogen doen.
Het is een echt wereldkampioenschap waar
de beste jonge paarden van alle leeftijdscategorieën lopen en het is een uitdaging om
daar aan mee te mogen doen met een van de
talenten die ik onder het zadel heb.
It promises to be a thrilling competition. I do
not know the 5-year-olds yet and I am very
curious to see what talents this category will
bring this year. For the horses that competed
last year it is exciting to see if they will live up
to their expectations.
Het wordt een spannende strijd. De vijfjarigen
ken ik nog niet en ik ben benieuwd wat daar
aan talent tussen loopt. Voor de paarden die
vorig jaar al meeliepen is het spannend om te
zien of ze de verwachtingen gaan waarmaken.
As preparation we received monthly trainings
from the KWPN, during which we can ride the
tests. That is very beneficial for the horses.
They regularly go out to different surroundings, you ride the test with them and you get
advice on how to improve your horse. As a
rider you clearly notice that the second training goes better, thanks to the tips in the first
training. The horses still need to gain experience. The World Breeding Championships
is very educational for young horses, they
­experience a professional, big competition with
vibrant surroundings.
Als voorbereiding hebben we vanuit het KWPN
maandelijks trainingen gehad, waarin we de
proeven kunnen doorrijden. Dat is heel goed
voor de paarden. Je neemt ze regelmatig mee,
je rijdt de proef door en je krijgt tips om de
proef en je paard te verbeteren. Je merkt dat
de proef de tweede training dankzij die tips
van de eerste training al een stuk beter gaan.
De paarden moeten nog ervaring opdoen. Het
wereldkampioenschap is heel leerzaam voor
paarden op jonge leeftijd, ze maken een professionele, grote wedstrijd mee met een prachtige
entourage er om heen.

For the province of Gelderland
events do not only revolve around
high-level sports, but primarily focus on
athletic and social side-events and the enthusiasm and athletic energy that they are
accompanied with.

Over the past few years, the province of Gelderland has heavily invested in a vibrant sport
environment with magnificent sports facilities
and successful sports events such as Jumping
Achterhoek, Outdoor Gelderland and of course
the World Championships Vaulting. Another
great example is the Giro d’Italia that spread a
pink cloud on our province early May this year.
For the coming years, we will build upon what
we have achieved. Amongst others, we will
focus on large sports events in our province,
such as the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo.
Every year horses and their breeders, riders and owners make history at the FEI/WBFSH World
Championships for Young Horses. Last year in Verden the 5-year-old full sisters by embryo transfer, Fiontini
and Fiontina claimed silver and gold, ridden by Danish Andreas Helgstrand and Spanish Severo Jurado.

De afgelopen jaren heeft de provincie Gelderland flink geïnvesteerd in
een bruisend sportklimaat met prachtige
sportaccommodaties en succesvolle sportevenementen zoals Jumping Achterhoek,
Outdoor Gelderland en natuurlijk het WK
Voltige. De komende jaren bouwen we hier
op voort. We zetten daarbij onder meer in
op grote sportevenementen in onze provincie zoals het WK Jonge Dressuurpaarden in
Ermelo. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is ook
de Giro d’Italia die begin mei dit jaar een roze
wolk over onze provincie liet neerdalen.
Het gaat de provincie bij evenementen niet
alleen om de topsport, maar vooral ook om
sportieve en maatschappelijke side-events, en
de golf van enthousiasme en sportieve energie
die hierdoor los komt. Daarom is het belangrijk
dat iedereen, van jong tot oud, met of zonder
beperking, MKB of groot bedrijf, geïnspireerd
kan raken door sport. Sportevenementen, en
in het bijzonder paardensportevenementen,
maken zichtbaar hoe dynamisch en mooi de
provincie Gelderland is.
In dit sportieve jaar 2016 staat ons een
prachtige sportzomer te wachten, met als
hoogtepunt de Olympisch zomerspelen in Rio
de Janeiro. De verwachting is dat Nederland
kansrijk is in het behalen van podiumplaatsen.
De paardensport, met haar vele ruiters en
amazones, is daarbij een van de belangrijkste
pijlers van het Nederlandse team. Een deel van
deze toppers kunt u dit jaar in actie zien op
de paardensportevenementen in Gelderland,
in het bijzonder tijdens het WK Jonge Dressuurpaarden in Ermelo. Als provincie dragen
wij er graag aan bij om dit mogelijk te maken.
Want ook met paardensport halen we het beste
uit Gelderland!

Dutch competitions are always very
well organised, so I have high anticipations for this first World Breeding Dressage
Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo.
It’s a delight to ride at such a championship.
More and more winners of the World Breeding
Dressage Championships for Young Horses
affirm their qualities at a later age in the Grand
Prix. Previously, you saw a lot of big movers
at the World Championships, but thanks to the
presence of Grand Prix judges, horses are now
also assessed on their ability to collect.
During the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses you get a better picture of what is happening in breeding
across borders, you see the young top horses
from every country. Last year I had six of the
5-year-old’s finalists on my property. The World
Breeding Dressage Championships for Young
Horses is like a window looking out over the
horses in your stables.

Nederlandse wedstrijden zijn
altijd goed georganiseerd dus
mijn verwachtingen voor dit eerste Wereldkampioenschap voor jonge paarden in
Ermelo zijn hoog. Het is een feest om zo’n
wereldkampioenschap te mogen rijden.
Steeds meer winnaars van het Wereldkampioenschap voor jonge paarden maken het
later ook in de Grand Prix. Vroeger zag je op
het Wereldkampioenschap veel ruime bewegers, maar dankzij de aanwezigheid van Grand
Prix-jury’s wordt er nu ook gekeken of paarden
het vermogen tot verzamelen hebben.
Tijdens het wereldkampioenschap zie je wat er
speelt in de fokkerij over de grenzen, je ziet de
jonge toppaarden uit alle landen. Vorig jaar had
ik zes van de vijfjarige finalepaarden op mijn erf.
Het Wereldkampioenschap voor jonge paarden
is als een venster op de paarden in je stal.

Championships for Young Horses
has become a platform where the world’s
best young horses come together. The
World Championships in 2014 for 5-yearolds and in 2015 for 6-year-olds with Suzuan
(Zack x Don Schufro) has brought me to the
point that I am no longer seen as solely a
Grand Prix rider, but also as a rider that is
capable of training a young horse up to the
Grand Prix level.
Winning the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses indicates that you
are a good trainer. Besides this, it was a fantastic experience to win two times.
I have good memories from Verden, but I am
also excited to go to Ermelo. I have never
been there before, but I heard that it is a beautiful location with outstanding riding facilities
and excellent stables. I am looking forward
to it!
Het Wereldkampioenschap voor
jonge paarden is inmiddels een
instituut waar de beste jonge paarden ter
wereld bijeen komen. Het wereldkampioenschap in 2014 bij de vijfjarigen en in 2015
bij de zesjarigen met Suzuan (Zack x Don
Schrufro) heeft mij gebracht dat ik niet alleen
gezien word als Grand Prix-ruiter, maar ook
als een amazone die een paard kan africhten
tot het niveau van Grand Prix.
Winnen op het wereldkampioenschap voor
jonge paarden geeft aan dat je een goede
africhter bent. Behalve dat was het ook echt
een fantastische belevenis om tweemaal
te winnen.
Ik heb goede herinneringen aan Verden maar
verheug me op Ermelo. Ik ben er nog nooit
geweest maar ik hoorde dat het een mooie
locatie is met uitstekende rijfaciliteiten en erg
goede stallen. Ik heb er zin in!

THAT DEFINING MOMENT
— ABOUT THE VISUAL IDENTITY —
As a company that specializes in strategy, design and marketing, we like
challenges. The creation of the visual identity for the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses (WBDCYH) was one of them.
Looking into the world of dressage, we viewed dozens of movies and photos, read many articles, blogs and websites and we discovered that defining
moment. The moment when everything comes together, all training, tension,
stress, hard work, rider and horse, public and judges: the moment when
the riders enter the arena and give their salute to the judges and public.
A moment of honour.
We defined that moment with the Latin phrase: Pugnaturi te salutant. In English: Those who will compete, salute you. It is this moment that we visualised
in the logo for WBDCYH.
The design challenge for the logo was to keep it simple, easy to apply, readable and it had to have unity with the FEI and Longines logos. Off course, we
wanted to add the Dutch colour, after all, we are all proud that this prestigious
event takes place in Ermelo. A challenge, but we and the team of WBDCYH
are very content with the results.
In association with the Organising Comittee and Charlotte Dekker (KWPN), we
developed the total visual identity, resulting in the website, brochure, flyers,
adverts, signing and all other communication items.
On behalf of the team of GSTALT, as design partner of WBDCYH, we hope
the visual identity will contribute to the experience of this phenomenal event
and wish you a great time!

The World Breeding Dressage
Championships for Young Horses
is not your average competition, it is a genuine world championship. I was excited to win
the 2006 World Breeding Dressage Championship for 5-year-olds with Uzzo (Lancet
x Indoctro). I had participated in the world
championships before, but I had never won
a medal. It’s fantastic to win starting from the
underdog position. Becoming world champion while no one expects you to, that is why
you participate. And hey, then you can add
the title world champion to your resumé.
Het Wereldkampioenschap voor
jonge dressuurpaarden is niet zomaar een kampioenschap, het is een echt WK.
Ik vond het geweldig om in 2006 het wereldkampioenschap voor vijfjarigen te winnen met
Uzzo (Lancet x Indoctro). Ik had al eerder een
wereldkampioenschap gereden, maar ik had
er nooit een medaille gehaald. Het is echt
gaaf als je vanuit een underdogpositie de
overwinning haalt. Wereldkampioen worden
terwijl niemand dat verwacht, dáár doe je het
voor. Dan staat er mooi wel wereldkampioen
op je CV.
I did not compete with a licensed stallion or a
horse that was up for sale, so for me there were
no other interests at play. Uzzo is a gelding
and was at that time owned by me, for that
reason I could see the world championships
as an investment in his education. The World
Breeding Dressage Championships for Young
Horses were an extra motivation to give Uzzo
the proper training and preparation.
Ik was er niet met een dekhengst of een paard
dat ik wou verkopen, dus voor mij speelden
er geen belangen mee. Uzzo is een ruin en
was toen mijn eigen paard, daardoor kon ik
het wereldkampioenschap als investering in
zijn opleiding zien. Voor mij was het wereldkampioenschap een stok achter de deur om
Uzzo goed voor te bereiden.

It was fantastic to become world
champion of the 5-year-olds in
Verden in 2005 with Damon Hill (Donnerhall
x Rubenstein I). Participating in the World
Breeding Dressage Championships for Young
Horses was already more than I dared to hope
for, so I never thought that I would win. It was
my first big success, before that no one knew
Helen Langehanenberg.
Het was fantastisch om in 2005 met
Damon Hill (Donnerhall x Rubinstein I)
wereldkampioen te worden bij de vijfjarigen in
Verden. Deelnemen aan het Wereldkampioenschap voor jonge paarden was al meer dan
ik aan durfde te denken, dat ik zou winnen
had ik nooit gedacht. Het was mijn eerste
grote succes, voordien kende niemand Helen
Langehanenberg.
When I saw Dami as a 3-year-old for the very
first time, I thought it was the best horse that I
had ever seen. Besides good management, a
combination of factors have enabled Damon
Hill to reach the highest level: he has amazing
gaits, a big heart, he wants to win and he loves
big competitions in massive arenas.
Toen ik Dami als driejarige voor het eerst zag,
vond ik hem het beste paard dat ik ooit zag.
Dat Damon Hill het gemaakt heeft tot het
allerhoogste niveau komt, naast een goed
management, door een combinatie van
factoren: hij heeft geweldige gangen, een groot
hart, hij wil winnen en houdt van grote wedstrijden in grote arena’s.
