IEEE 802.16m Power Management
• Design goal for 802.16m power management
– IEEE 802.16m shall provide support for enhanced power saving functionality to
help reduce power consumption further (compared to legacy 16e) in devices for
all services and applications.
• The following issues should be considered for enhancing power saving
functionality, since every issue are related to and have influence on idle mode
– MS power efficient paging
• Hierarchical paging group & broadcast channel design for hierarchical paging
group (C802.16m-08/777)
• Paging procedure (C802.16m-08/778)
– Idle Mode Key Update for IEEE 802.16m MS (C802.16m-08/779)
2
IEEE 802.16m hierarchical paging group
• The BSs are divided into two types of logical paging groups called large and
small paging groups.
• The purpose of operating two kinds of paging groups is :
– The MS power usage for decoding paging messages can be reduced.
– The overhead for transmitting paging messages can be decreased in terms of
network resource usage.
The paging controller
only pages the small
paging group 1 to find
mobile station A.
The paging controller only pages
the large paging group to find
mobile station B, avoiding any
paging to the small paging groups
1, 2 and 3.

Broadcast channel design for hierarchal paging group
• Broadcast Channel within IEEE 802.16m super frame header
– Separate the two broadcast channel
• Network common broadcast channel using SFN (PBCH)
• Cell Specific broadcast channel (SBCH)
– Network common broadcast channel includes the large paging group information
(large paging group ID, paging indication)
– Cell specific broadcast channel includes the small paging group information
(small paging group ID, paging indication)
– Paging group ID
• ID of the paging group (large & small paging group) the MS belongs to.
– Paging Indication
• It is indication that points out whether paging message is intended for itself or not.

Paging procedure for IEEE 802.16m (1)
• The problem of legacy(802.16e) paging procedure
– The idle mode MS has no choice but decoding whole frames of the paging
interval to identify whether a paging message exists or not.
• Excessive decoding overhead and additional battery consumption.
– In order to notify the idle mode MS of the transmission frame of updated
system information, the BS has to transmit ‘Broadcast Control Pointer IE’
during every paging interval.
• Additional notifications for system information update.
• Delay of the activation time of the updated system information to be
applied to the network
6
Paging procedure for IEEE 802.16m (2)
• The considerations for 802.16m paging procedure
– Load-balancing of paging messages transmitted by a BS
• IEEE 802.16m transmits a message based on a subframe, a subframe may not be sufficient to
accommodate all MSs of a BS paging group with a single paging message. Therefore, we prefer
that paging messages in IEEE 802.16m is also distributed into multiple MS groups like legacy
system.
– Transmission of a flag indicating the presence of paging messages
• If there is no paging message within this paging cycle, the MS does not need to try to detect the
paging message. Therefore, the paging indication will be also effective to the MS power saving.
– Minimization of additional notifications for system information update
• It would be beneficial to synchronize the wakeup time with the subframe containing BCH,
because it does not need an additional notification for system information update.
– Faster activation of the updated system information to the network
• If all MSs under a BS simultaneously receive the change notification of system information, the
updated information will be more quickly able to be applied to the network.

•
IEEE 802.16m draft shall support for enhanced power saving functionality to reduce power
consumption in devices
IEEE 802.16m specifications shall include the security procedures for enhanced key management
• Impact of security procedures on the performance of system functions and procedures shall
be minimized `
IEEE 802.16m systems shall provide support for enhanced multicast/broadcast services
For either the update of MBS keying materials or the notifications of MBS key update
Use of MBS MAP
–
–
For the notification of MBS key update
After receiving paging message or MBS MAP, updated MBS key is quickly sent from BS to MS
• MS can get seamless services when it awakes from idle mode
