WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE – THE BASICS

   Thought to be born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon Avon Died April 23, 1616 Considered to be the best writer in the English language  Surviving works: 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 2 long narrative poems, and several other poems.

SHAKESPEARE’S STYLE

    Blank Verse – Poetry with meter but no rhyme Iambic Pentameter – 10 syllables to a line, every other syllable stressed.

THE GLOBE THEATRE

 First theatre built by actors, for actors.

 Theatre where the majority of Shakespeare’s works were originally performed.

 Exact size unknown – The original theatre burned down. It was replaced, and the replacement was destroyed to make room for housing.

THE LAYOUT

      The Pit – Open area around stage. For a penny, you could stand here to watch a performance.

The Gallery – Three levels of stadium-style seating. More expensive than the pit.

The Stage Platform – Where the Performances took place.

The Cellarage – Area underneath stage.

Ceiling (Heavens) – Roof over back part of stage.

Balcony – used for musicians & Balcony scenes.
