International conference
Game-changing concepts for Healthy Ageing
and the built environment
The City of Groningen, the Netherlands
1–3 June 2016
Welcome to the Northern Netherlands, a three star
Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership
of Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA). Welcome to
the city of Groningen. And welcome to the conference
that will hopefully revitalize the once fertile coalition
between urban planning, architecture and public health,
leading to new and powerful concepts for healthy cities,
Man-Made Blue Zones, smart and healthy houses, clean
water, new concepts for preventive medicine in urban
planning and state of the art future hospitals and healthcare institutions.
Building the Future of Health has its origins in a vast series of projects which all had a connection to the the city of Groningen and the
University Medical Center Groningen: our main venue for the duration
of the conference. All projects shared a great interest in the topic of
health, architecture and urbanism. Amongst these were the influential international conference The Architecture of Hospitals in 2005,
the Future OR and IC workshops and the Dutch spoken Ruimte voor
Gezondheid congress in 2012.
But there is more. As a reference site the Healthy Ageing Network
Northern Netherlands (HANNN) is aiming to share knowledge and expertise to allow cross-border innovation. Collaboration takes place in
various ways, such as exchanging best practices, providing test beds and
organize matchmaking and exchange knowledge between researchers
and entrepreneurs. For HANNN, Building the Future of Health is a platform to explore a new and challenging field of expertise: the relevance of
architecture, design, urban planning, and landscape architecture for our
Healthy Ageing ambitions.
Due to the conviction that the best solutions come about by exchanging
knowledge and skills, the BTFOH conference is of a highly interdisciplinary nature. For three days, it offers an inspiring environment in which
architects, urban planners, landscape architects, medical researchers,
environmental planners, policymakers, administrators, doctors, sociologists, (local) politicians and authorities, demographers and representatives from various other disciplines in the field of public health can meet.
Therefore, this conference is not merely about presenting interesting
lectures and delivering thoughtful insights. We want to lay the foundations for new and inspiring alliances and projects in Groningen, the
Netherlands, Europe and other cities and regions worldwide. Let’s connect science and design, get it all into vision and action!
