Interventions
HS317b - Coding &
Classification
of Health Information
Intervention
A service performed for or on behalf of a
client whose purpose is to improve health,
to alter or diagnose the course of a
disease (health condition) or to promote
wellness.
 Therapeutic, Diagnostic, Obstetrical and
Fetal, Other interventions

Therapeutic Interventions
Purpose: to improve health, alter the
course of a disease or health condition, or
to promote wellness.
 While a therapeutic intervention may
contain a diagnostic component, the
primary intent of the intervention is to
alleviate or treat the underlying disease or
health condition.

Diagnostic Intervention

A service performed for or on behalf of a
client whose basic purpose is to assess
the presence, absence or status of a
disease process or health condition.
Obstetrical & Fetal Interventions
A service performed for or on behalf of a
pregnant client which pertains solely to the
pregnancy or to the fetus.
 These codes have been separated from
other diagnostic and therapeutic
interventions.

Structure of the CCI Code
1 .AN.87.SE-AZ

1.AN.87.SE-AZ Excision partial, brain, burr
hole technique for access, with ultrasonic
aspirator [e.g. CUSA]

The structure of the fields is the same for
all sections of CCI but the meanings of
field 2,4 and 5 may change slightly to
remain relevant.
Structure of the CCI Code
1 .AN.87.SE-AZ

‘1’ refers to sections (field1)
1 = Physical/Physiological Therapeutic Interventions
2 = Diagnostic Interventions
3 = Diagnostic Imagining Interventions
4 = Clinical Laboratory Investigation
5 = Obstetrical and Fetal Interventions
6 = Cognitive, Psychosocial and Sensory Therapeutic
Interventions
7 = Other Healthcare Interventions
1. AN .87.SE -AZ

AN refers to the anatomy site (field 2)
AN = Brain

87 refers to the intervention (field 3)
Partial Excision
(As a general rule of thumb, all interventions in section 1 of CCI
that have a generic intervention number of “50” or higher, should
be coded in acute care facilities)


SE refers to the approach/technique (field 4)

Burr hole approach
1 .AN.87.SE- AZ

AZ refers to device used (field 5)
 Ultrasonic

aspirator
Sometimes CCI codes have another
grouping of letters (field 6). This refers to
the tissue used (e.g. grafts, flaps)
Attributes
Attributes are separate data elements from the
CCI code.
Their function is to provide extra detail about the
intervention (or the episode of the intervention)
that may be useful.
Types of attributes: status, location, mode of
delivery, extent
Attributes that are pink are mandatory for certain
scenarios
What procedures to code?



As a general rule of thumb, all interventions in
section 1 of CCI that have a generic intervention
number of “50” or higher, should be coded in
acute care facilities
In section 5 interventions with a number greater
than “45”.
Mandatory Interventions like cardiopulmonary
bypass, ventilation of respiratory system greater
than 96 hours, Induction of labour
Note rules in Coding Standards
Abandoned interventions
 Change of plans during an intervention
 Converted interventions
 Failed interventions
 Revised interventions
 Endoscopic interventions
 Diagnostic Imaging interventions

