The Metric System (Day 3)
(Kilo… to milli… units)
We are learning to…convert metric units of
length, mass, and volume.
Friday, May 27, 2016
What is the Metric System?
 System of measurements that is based on
increments of 10.
 Why should I learn about the Metric System
of Measurement?
 Much easier to convert measurements compared
to the English System of Measurement
 Over 95% of the world uses the metric system.
 In fact only 3 countries still use the English
System of Measurement
 Myanmar
 Liberia
 The United States
The basic units of the Metric
System:
 A METER is the basic unit of length in
the Metric System.
 A GRAM is the basic unit of weight
and mass in the Metric System
 Think of the weight of a gram to be
about 1 paper clip.
 A LITER is the basic unit of volume in
the Metric System.
There are also units of the Metric System which are smaller
than the basic units.
Moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit you must divide because you
must see how many groups of the smaller units are inside the larger unit.

Moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit you must multiply because
there are a lot of the smaller units inside of the larger unit.
Converting Between Metric Units…
17 m = ________
1,700 cm
Larger unit to a small unit… so
multiply
17 m × 10 × 10
9.81 dl = ________
98.1 cl
Larger unit to a small unit… so
multiply
9.81 dl × 10
86,000 mg = ________
86
g
Smaller unit to a larger unit… so
divide
86,000 mg ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
83 mm = ________
0.083 m
Smaller unit to a larger unit… so
divide
83 mm ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
•Try converting some metric units of length, weight/mass and volume
with your teammates.
Raise your hand when you are complete so your teacher can check your
solutions.
Units which are larger than the
basic units…
 There are also units which are larger than the basic
units:
 10 of the basic unit put together are called a
decameter, decagram, or decaliter.
 To remember this think of a decade. A decade is 10
years, while a “decaunit” has 10 units put together.
 100 of the basic unit put together are called a
hectometer, hectogram, or a hectoliter.
 1,000 of the basic unit put together are called a
kilometer, kilogram, or a kiloliter.
Moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit you must divide because you
must see how many groups of the smaller units are inside the larger unit.
