RBIF-0103-G1 Probability and Statistics Prof. M. Partensky Brandeis University - Spring 2003 Group Project Using Statistics and Mathematica to Analyze Body Temperatures Vaishali Khamamkar Timothy Foley Statistics and Mathematica in the Biological Sciences • Our Audience – Biologists – Interested in the science we are presenting – Mathematicians – Interested in the statistics and mathematics that we use – Computer Scientists – Interested in our use of the Mathematica software package Study area – The measure of Human and Animal Body Temperature 1. Human Body Temperature – the Myth of 98.6° Fahrenheit 2. Squirrel Temperature – Hibernation 3. Predicting Ovulation with Basal Body Temperature Concluding Remarks • We found several interesting areas of study related to body temperature • We learned things that we did not know or expect • Our knowledge of Statistics was broadened by this project • We found Mathematica to be a powerful and useful tool (once we got the hang of it!)
