Is The World Flat?
•Background •Arguments for and against a flat earth •Proof – experiments •Conclusion
Background
• When the earth became round – the world went from a pancake to an orange • Christopher Columbus called Grigori Efimovich – a heretic? • The Church and the Bible’s involvement • Key Individuals: Samuel Rowbotham, Charles Johnson, Samuel Shenton
Flat Earth Society’s Beliefs
• The Earth is flat – disc shaped • The North Pole is at the centre of the disc • There is a huge ice wall around the edge of the Earth • Space is not a vacuum • The Earth is at the centre of the universe • RE’ers and FE’ers
Arguments and experiments to prove the Earth is flat.
• The ether factor • Difficulties with the model: incorporating an Efimovich-type model with the known Universe – Maintaining speed; An accelerating world • The impossibilities of holding unsecured objects in place on a curved surface • Bedford Level Experiment
Ether factor
• Finding the speed of Earth • Does ether exist?
• Space is full of ether
Maintaining speed
• How can the earth be spinning still for billions of years if there is ether in space slowing it down?
Other arguments
If the world were spinning wouldn’t people fly off into outer space? Wouldn’t people and buildings be crushed under the centrifugal forces??
If gravity pulls you down and you are standing at one of the poles surely the person at the South Pole would fall off the face of the earth?
Bedford Level experiment
• • • • • A six-mile river in Norfolk Investigated by Samuel Rowbotham, former President of Flat Earth Society Using a telescope he observed the level of water against a boat that was slowly rowing away from him. He observed the mast of the boat to be constantly in view. Many people have done the experiment and got different results Is the earth Round? Flat? Or even Hollow?
What do all these experiments mean? How reliable are they?
• What you need to do is consider, is that does the argument sound convincing?
• Also does the argument make sense?
• Can the Argument be disproved?
• Is the argument just absolute rubbish?
