In Action Situations
In The Classroom
Case Study 1a
Jonah is in a class discussing American politics.
He vociferously defends the Bush
administration, expresses whole hearted
support for the war in Iraq and claims that if he
had a gun he would be more than happy to kill
Muslim terrorists. His mention of shooting
people frightens two students in the class, who
complain to the teacher that he is scary, way
too outspoken and always dresses in
“fatigues.”
Case Study 1b
Tony is a George Bush fan and is very
supportive of the war in Iraq. In class, he
refers to terrorists as “ragheads” and thinks
that anyone who doesn’t believe in the war is a
traitor. Tony is also anti-gun control and makes
it known that the Virginia Tech massacre
wouldn’t have happened if the University
allowed students to carry guns. Tony said a
student who had a gun “would have blown
away that gook in seconds.” What should the
professor do here.
Case Study 2
Sam and Michelle are sitting in the very back
of the class while the teacher is teaching. They
are giggling and whispering. Sam tells a
pretty raw sexual joke loud enough that many
in the class hear it. Michelle laughs harder in
response to the joke. Sandra is really
offended by the joke and complains to the
teacher after class.
Case Study 3
A student named Bob is sitting in class. Bob is
18 years old and still struggling with his
sexuality. During the course of the lecture, his
teacher makes comments about homosexuals
and women in the workplace saying that “gay
men and women will bend over backwards to
serve you.” Bob is very upset by this comment
and doesn’t know what to do about it.
Case Study 4
Members of the class are at Thirsty Thursday in
Ryan Hall. Everyone has had a few beers.
Sally, who is pretty drunk, starts asking Randy
(who is Aboriginal) questions about his reserve
and soon she is asking things like… “did you
ever play cowboys and Indians?”, “why do
Indians drink so much?”, “how come I have to
pay for school and you guys don’t?” and “why
do Indian girls get pregnant so early?”…
Randy gets up and leaves the group.
Case Study 5
While out in the field Josh drops a box of gear
and it spills over the ground (there is an
expensive electronic sensor in the box). The
field supervisor yells “watch it asshole, you got
to be more careful!” Josh has been careless in
the past week. Josh apologizes and picks up
the gear; he says later that he’s scared of
getting fired.
Case Study 6
Bob is a big guy. One day during a class field
trip he’s getting into the van and Tony yells, “sit
on the other side or we’ll tip!” Tony has made
comments about Bob’s size before. Bob laughs
and sits down on the other side. Normally
talkative, Bob is very quiet on the ride in.
Case Study 7
Jane shows up in the SUCCI office complaining
that she hasn’t received any grades for her
course in week 12 of the semester. Jane sees
that she has a right to “a learning environment
conducive to learning” and questions how she
can learn if she hasn’t got a clue where she
stands. Jane also asks what a “mid term
evaluation” is and whether that means she was
supposed to meet with her teacher at week 8.
What should this student do?
Case Study 8
Nathan has marginal grades, is frequently late
and has missed about ¼ of his classes.
Because he hasn’t made the minimum 60% for
this course he has not qualified to proceed to
field placement. He asks if he can proceed on
probation because “I would never behave like
this in placement cause that’s like a job.”
Case Study 9
Sharon and Becky don’t get along very well.
They snip at each other a lot in class, but most
of the time they just steer clear. One day they
appear to be arguing about something. It
goes on for a few minutes, then Sharon
threatens that her boyfriend is going to beat
up Becky’s boyfriend at Roxie’s Bar if she
doesn’t shut her mouth. Becky complains to the
professor.
Case Study 10
Brad arrives in class a minimum of 20 minutes late for
each class. After being absent 2 weeks in a row,
Brad asks the professor in class to explain the details
of an assignment the teacher gave out last week. The
professor asks to see Brad after class and indicates
his lateness and absences are a problem. Brad says
“this isn’t high school, I pay to be here, and if I want to
be late or absent, it’s my business.” What do the
rules say about this?
Case Study 11
Heather is a mature student returning to school
because of a workplace injury. She is making
complaints that the content of one of her 1st
semester courses is “very dated” and she
questions the relevance of it. She is making
constant complaints to the professor and has
just gone to the Dean to make the same
complaint.
Case Study 12
Robert hands in his assignment 10 days late
without making any previous arrangements with
the professor. The assignment is handed back
ungraded and Robert receives a zero. Robert
goes to the Dean, complaining that these rules
weren’t explained and that this means he can’t
pass the course.
Case Study 13
John and Mandy are first semester students
who submit individual assignments that are
identical. The professor grades each paper
“0” and both students ask to meet with the
prof. During the meeting they say “we worked
together on this assignment so of course there is
going to be similar sections!” They want to
appeal this grade.
Case Study 14a
Marissa is a single parent mom of an 8 year
old who has the flu. Marissa was up with the
child most of the night and sleeps through her
alarm. She misses her 8:00 a.m. test, wakes up
at 9:00 a.m. and in a panic phones her teacher
and leaves a message.
Case Study 14b
John had a birthday yesterday and went out
with his friends. Since it was his 19th, he got
very drunk, slept through his alarm and missed
his 8:00 a.m. test. He wakes up at 9:00 a.m.
and in a stupor phones his teacher and leaves
a message.
Case Study 14c
Rebecca has missed about 40 percent of her
classes due to the demands of a part time job.
She missed class two weeks ago when the
announcement was made that there was a test
this morning at 8:00 a.m. She asks to speak to
the teacher and asks permission to write the
test sometime this week. She indicates she has
to work because she gets no support from her
parents and has a car and insurance payments
to deal with.
Case Study 15
Edith and Tony are two mature students. They are
fed up with the other students in the class because of
the incessant chatter. “We sit in the front, but the
talking that goes on around us really interferes with
our concentration.” The professor talks to the class the
next week about the issue, but despite this Ray is still
talking to his neighbour while the professor is
explaining a physics concept. After another verbal
warning, the teacher asks Ray to leave the class. Ray
is indignant and says “you can’t make me leave, there
are others talking as much as me.”
