Do now-5-17-10
Observe the picture below
Write down names of living things in the picture
and non living things.
Definition of Terms:

Ecosystem - All the living and non living
things that interact in a particular area.
Habitat – The place where an
organisms lives.
Niche-An organism’s particular role in an
ecosystem or how it makes its living.

This includes the food they eat and who eat
them.
Biotic – The living parts of the
ecosystem.
Abiotic factors – non living parts of
the ecosystem
1. Water
2. sunlight
3. air/oxygen
5. Temperature
4. soil
Abiotic

2. Sunlight

5. Temperature
3. Oxygen . 4. Soil
Levels of organization in an
ecosystem

Single Organism – smallest unit of
organization in the ecosystem.
Population – all members of one
species.
Community – all the different species in
the ecosystem. Only living things in the
ecosystem
Levels of organization in
Ecosystem:


Organism  population  CommunityEcosystem
Society

A closely related population of animals
that work together for the benefit of the
whole group – like queen bee lay eggs, all
females are worker bees and all male bees
help in reproduction.

Copy the chart. Write the biotic and abiotic that
you can see in the diagram
Biotic
Abiotic
Producers – organisms that uses the energy from the sun
to make their food. All the plants are producers. They
produced their own food during photosynthesis
Types of consumers
1. Herbivores
– eat only food
coming from
plants.
2. Carnivore –
animals that eat
only meat of
other animals.
3. Omnivore
– eat both
plants and
other animals
4. Decomposers
Organisms that
causes decay.
Carnivore – animals that eat only
meat of other animals.
Omnivore – eat both plants and
other animals
Scavenger – animals that eat only
dead organisms
Decomposers
Organisms that causes decay.
 Examples:

Fungi like
mushroom
bacteria
earthworms
Hermit crab
Food chain –a series of events in
which one organism eats another and
obtain energy.

Assignment 5-18-10
Create food chains using the diagram that will be given to you.
Be sure to label the Producer, first level consumer
(herbivores), 2nd level consumer (carnivore), and the 3rd level
(carnivore)

1. How many producers do you see in the diagram above?
2. How many first level consumers do you see?
3. How many food chain can you make out of this food web?
5-19-10
Complete 4 food chains out of your diagrams.

After doing the food chain, do a

Energy Pyramid – shows the amount of
energy that moves from level to another
level
