Extras

Clubs: We get to meet for clubs once a month. We may choose from karaoke, fishing, art, skateboarding, foreign languages, doodling, checkers, poetry, and many more.

Students from many places in America and from foreign countries, especially Mexico, are moving here in large numbers. Our school population grows and grows. Not everyone has a locker. We also have to set up extra buildings outside to accommodate everyone. The hallways are very crowded.

Our school is a place of constant growth and change. There are many challenges and many opportunities.

Our Class

We work hard in our Art I class. We are currently painting in acrylics. We will be sending you copies of some of them. Mrs. Lee is very creative and encourages us to do our best. Mrs. Marquess, our principal, is very supportive of the Arts at WJHS. Jasmine Belloni, a 3 rd year art student, shows off her latest painting. It is a collaboration done with another student, Shannon Vance.

Our Area

Our Area has one of the fastest growing populations in America, largely due to Wal-Mart Headquarters being located here. There are job opportunities from corporate level to minimum wage. Tyson Foods and many trucking firms are also located here. There is construction everywhere. Growth is good, but the price is that we are losing many trees and natural resources of our beautiful area. We are embracing a large Hispanic population. We have signs displayed, and services offered in English and Spanish. XNA – Northwest AR Regional Airport Buffalo River

University of Arkansas

Old Main is the oldest building on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which is about 20 miles from Bentonville. It was constructed in 1875 and restored in 1989. It now houses the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, which is where Mrs. Lee graduated. Her name is engraved on the Walk of Fame sidewalk, which holds the names of every U of A graduate. That is very Cool! The U of A mascot is the Razorback and we love to “Call the Hogs- Whoo Pig Sooie!”

Monte Ne

Monte Ne is an old town that was built by a man by the name of Coin Harvey. He built the town in the Ozark Mountains because he had heard that there were springs that held healing water flowing through the mountains. He built an amphitheater that could seat 1,000 people to watch actors and plays. After Coin Harvey died, the State Corps of Engineers bought the town and built a dam. The dam flooded the whole town. It has been under water for most of the last 120 years. Last year the town started to slowly rise because our man-made Beaver Lake is going through a drought and the water level is falling. I recently got to visit Monte Ne. Check out the pictures that I got of the amphitheater and the rest of the town. Matt Pratt

For some of us fashion is important. We shop at many different types of stores, for many different types of looks, occasions, and brand names. We try to show our individuality through our clothes, hair, and accessories. Others dress the same to be a part of a group . We should probably be putting more importance on things like grades- the way you do!

Video Games

Many kids spend time after school playing video games. One of the biggest systems is Xbox, and the Xbox 360. Halo is an extremely popular game on the Xbox. Tournaments are held here and people make videos of their games at LAN parties to post on the internet. Another popular system is the PSP, or Play Station Portable. It’s a handheld system that can play music, store pictures, and of course play video games. Online games are big too. World of War Craft is probably the biggest one played, but there are many others.

Some of us like to do things in our past times other than sports. We like to listen to music, spend time on the computer and watch TV and movies. We also like to “hang out” a lot, which means we like to spend time doing nothing with people we enjoy being around, like family or friends. Ipods and MP3 players are the “new thing” in the US. A lot of people have them and we spend a lot of time listening to them. When we aren’t listening to music we like to watch bands perform live in concerts. Some like to go on websites like xanga and MySpace as well. We spend 8 hours in school so most of us have free time when we aren’t doing homework or playing sports. Do you like these things?

Sam Walton In 1950 the grand opening of the ‘Walton’s 5 and Dime’ was on the Bentonville square. Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, was born on March 29,1918. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Lee Walton. Sam’s first Wal-Mart store was opened in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. In 1970 it became an official company and had stocks on Wall-Street. Sam Walton remained a hardworking man of values and simple needs and ran his company that way.

Over the years Wal Mart’s stores have doubled, tripled, and opened stores all across the world, even in China. Wal-Mart has shaped our community and the world in many ways. It has become one of the biggest corporations in the world. In 1992 Sam Walton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Three weeks after the ceremony Sam sadly passed away from cancer. The company expanded on his principles.

funds. Wal-Mart sponsors many activities here also, and contributes to many charity A few of the remaining Walton family members still live here in Northwest Arkansas. Wal-mart also runs the Fitness Center here in Bentonville, which supplies Wal-Mart hired families with exercise room, tracks to run on, swimming pools, and other things like tennis and volleyball courts.

People come from all over the world to the annual shareholders convention.

Food

Where we live, the cuisine is very diverse. Our food is from many different countries all over the world. One night, we may eat Mexican food and the next day we might be eating Chinese food (heartburn?) Our area is growing fast and the demand for new food is great. As a result new restaurants are being built all over town. Chinese restaurants in this area include: Lin’s Garden, Panda, Silk Road, Jade China, and Hunan China house. Do you have many American restaurants where you live? By: Anthony Rouse, Brandon Ellis, and Chris Servati

School Lunches

Many students in America are overweight due to the availability of fast food. Some students bring their lunch from home but for those who eat at school, our cafeteria changed this year from mostly ala-cart selections of pizza, French-fries, and ice-cream to two main lines of salads, fruits, leaner main courses, and lighter desserts. The soft drink machines have been restocked with water, juice, and sports drinks. Our lunches now look a lot more healthy, like yours. It is very good!

Recreation

In our town you can join many types of sports’ teams. We have soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, boxing, gymnastics, football, and swimming, so we can really have fun playing a sport. We also have parks, but many students choose to go home and watch TV after school. Then we have bowling alleys, skating rinks, ice rinks, libraries and swimming pools. All where you can go and have fun with friends and family. So, as you can tell, there are actually a lot of things to do here.

The basketball court is where some students play basketball. Students play here before and after school. This is a soccer field where people play soccer for fun and it’s by our school.

The pool and the baseball fields are in Memorial Park, near our school.

Welcome all, This is Josh Adams, Ryan Beechen, Tyler Gooding, and Keith Frenchman. We are your average Skateboarders and BMXers. We like to shred up the park and chill with all of our friends. Our skate park is located in Memorial Park. Our community decided to build us a park because of the large number of people that enjoy the sport. If you do come here, check out our awesome park.

Daewon Song is one of our favorites. Linking tricks together like a real-life Tony Hawk

character, there’s really little else to compare him to. Well, maybe besides his good buddy Rodney Mullen. He sets his mind on something and does it –like he has his entire career. And by the way he’s talking; he may be the first person to attain three by 2011 or so. Daewon Song refuses to see an end. Seth Kimbrough is a well known B-mixer. He is not only known for his amazing riding capabilities he is the lead singer of Mortal Treason. Seth is a well rounded rider. He cares about riding and only riding. Seth is a lot like me. We both ride and love music. Seth is such a good rider that he has mastered the ability to ride brakeless. Riding brakeless and being good at riding has earned him the name “The Brakeless Wonder.

Special thanks to Danielle McKnight & Matt Brelsford for their patience and hard work on our power-point presentation.
