Purpose for publishing is to raise fund to support World Vision's on going environmental projects in China which will significantly improve the living conditions of the children and help slow down the pace of environmental degradation and human impact such as deforestation, soil erosion, increased potential for flooding, climate change and global warming. The publisher, Spoonbill Books, will sponsor half of the publishing costs and is inviting sponsoring partners to join in this initiative.

OBJECTIVES

 To support the environmental protection projects currently conducting by World Vision China in different parts of rural China as means of resources development for the communities in need. Major projects include: -Biogas System Construction -Promotion of Organic fertilizer and non-toxic insecticide -Forestation, including the planting of trees and grass -Construction of drinking water cisterns in drought prone regions -Development of larger clean water infrastructure and reservoir systems -Development of drainage system -Drilling Wells

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT ?

WORLD VISION ENVIRONMNETAL PROJECTS

 Water Solution  Construction of drinking water cisterns for families in drought prone regions    The cisterns can collect water when it rains or snows on the roof or courtyard of their home, providing 500m3 of clean water that can be drunk or used for watering their vegetable garden. Adding water purification tablets further reduces the likelihood of disease or illness. Funds that are provided are often matched by government funds and families band together to provide labor, raw materials and expertise to build the cisterns, making it a community building exercise. Development of larger clean water infrastructure and reservoir systems In areas where the topography and weather conditions permit, we have found pumping water from a lower water source up to a man made reservoir at a higher elevation significantly improves the economic potential, health and safety of families. In this way, villagers can install water pipes linking the reservoir to their village and eventually to their homes and field eliminating the need to carry water for long distance. They can irrigate their crops easier and have a much higher yield. Projects like this are usually done in conjunction with local government planning bureaus and with the labor provided by local villagers.

WORLD VISION ENVIRONMNETAL PROJECTS

  Development of drainage system  In areas where there is flooding during parts of the rainy season, the lack of infrastructure to drain away excess water creates a hazard and wastes a valuable resource that could be used in the dry seasons. Building drainage systems in potential flood areas significantly reduce flooding during the summer months and can store water for future use. Projects like these are hard for villagers to do on their own due to the high initial costs. By providing some funds and encouraging the local officials to invest in this type of project, we provide the spark that makes a life changing difference in the lives of hundreds of villagers Drilling Wells  In areas where there is clean underground water, drilling a well will make a tremendous difference in the lives of villagers. This is especially important in the Northern area where water is scarce with unhealthy mineral content. .

WORLD VISION ENVIRONMNETAL PROJECTS

 Energy Saving Project/Biogas System Construction  Although electricity is available in many places in China, conventional fuels, including firewood and straw are usually used for cooking and heating because they are cheaper and ‘plenty’ on the hillsides. A rough calculation, one family consumes roughly 35kg firewood a day that takes 4 hours to cut.     Biogas is a mixture of gas produced by bacteria while acting upon biodegradable materials in a biogas digester that connects to toilet and pigpens. Biogas is mainly composed of 50 to 70 percent methane, 30 to 40 percent carbon dioxide (CO2) and low amount of other gases. It is a useful but low cost energy source because it disposes of the large quantities of manure available in agricultural and livestock region, and produces fertilizer to boost local agriculture production. More important, biogas is used for cooking and heating, or lighting. There are more means to protect the environment as well as improve the efficiency in the villages. Using solar-powered stoves or energy saving stoves reduce firewood cut per day. This can make tremendous effect on environment in the long run. Yet, high initial set up cost always hinders villagers’ action.

WORLD VISION ENVIRONMNETAL PROJECTS

 

Organic fertilizer and non-toxic insecticide

 The excess use of commercial fertilizer can cause damage to the roots of the plants. It will also build up toxic chemical in the soil causing lower productivity in the future. Usage of toxic insecticide can harm human health. Sadly, villagers sometimes are misled or forced, to apply them because of the lower prices. Environmental awareness program, preparation of organic fertilizer and the use of non-toxic insecticide are activities WV implemented in many rural development projects to advocate for environment protection. Plantation  Landslides and serious flooding occur frequently in area of adverse topography destroying crops and endangering human lives. Existence of bad land in northern China is especially difficult. Forestation, including the planting of trees and grass, becomes a vital way out.

 Funding provided does not only allow the purchase of seeds and fertilizers but also contribute to a sustainable development. Awareness-raising program can be organized for villagers. Furthermore, by improving their skill on planting vegetation on slope and their profession of growing seedlings, we believe bare land will wear new green fashion in the near future.
