The Buddha
• The Buddha started
out life as a Prince
called Siddhartha
Gutama.
• He was born in
Northern India.
• He founded the
religion we call
Buddhism.
The Buddha was a
Prince who lived in a
Palace.
His father did not
allow him to
experience any
suffering.
Siddhartha went
outside the
palace and he
saw;
an old man
a sick man
a dead man
& a holy man
This had an
effect on him
Seeing these
things had a
strong effect on
him.
He decided to
abandon his wife
& child.
He left the Palace
& went & lived in
the forest.
The Prince gave
up luxury.
He fasted and
became an
ascetic.
He ate so little that
you could see his
bones.
He tried out all these
extreme ideas
because he was sad
at seeing
suffering.He hoped
to overcome it.
A man living as an ascetic. This is in
India today.
A man showing that it is
possible to live like an
ascetic.
Denied food & luxury his
body is very thin. He is not
dying despite his austere
life.
The Most famous Buddhist man in the World. The Dali
Lama
Why would anyone want
to be a Buddhist?
There are people who live like this even today. Here we see Jain
monks who wear no clothes and are acetic
Then one day
he decided that
this was not
doing him any
good. He
decided to
abandon
fasting and
look for a more
gentle life.
He accepted a meal from a stranger.
He did not give
up his quest.
He sat down &
began to
meditate.
Then he was
tempted by
visions of sexual
desire from the
Devil.
The Prince resisted
all temptation.
He kept meditating
and reached a high
level of
consciousness.
This is called
NIRVANA or
ENLIGHTENMENT.
Prince Siddhartha
Gutama was now
called
“the Buddha”
which means
the Enlightened
one.

The Buddha’s Teachings
• The Four
Noble
Truths.
1st Noble Truth (
everywhere
in human experience
suffering is
Dukkha
SUFFERING IS
EVERYWHERE
Natural suffering in disasters that we have no
control over.
Example
Antony Walker was
axed to death.
This is man made
suffering It is
avoidable
The unexploded bomb in
London
The London bombings
The Buddha appears to be right. That suffering is
everywhere. Thousands die each day.
Suffering is everywhere. Do you agree? What do you use for
evidence?
