• Nowadays about 400 million people speak English.
• Nowadays English is second only to Chinese in the
number of people who speak it.
• About 300 million people living in more than 60
countries speak English as a second language.
• There were only 30,000 words in Old English. Some
people say there are about 600,000 words in Modern
English.
• English is the language of technology and science,
business and sport , official language of the Olympics ,
the official voice of the air and of the sea.
