What is Sheltered Instruction?
Sheltered instruction is an approach
for teaching CONTENT to English
Language Learners (ELLs) using
strategies:
• that make the subject matter
easier to understand
AND
• that promote the students’
English language development.
What is the SIOP Model?
 Research-based
framework
(Sheltered Instruction Observation
Protocol)
 Identifies
8 components and 30
indicators of effective instruction in
the K-12 content areas
 Fits

A common response….
SIOP is
JUST good
teaching
+
SIOP is good teaching PLUS
Purposeful teaching of
the language necessary
for English Learners to
understand content.
Remember that….
A LEP student can not fail a course
if she/he has not been provided
instructional and testing
accommodations to the student.
