Forum Context & Priorities

Internet gateway devices: Extend present success

AV & imaging devices: Get interoperable products to market.

Security: Finalize solution and add security support to certification tool.
Automation working committee: Complete sample implementations and
finalize specifications.


IGD working committee: extend the IGD specification & develop a
specification for the auto configuration of wireless access points.

Certification entity: Grow list of certified devices and promote and
exploit the UPnP logo.

Lowering the bar: Simplify the rules for adopting UPnP technology by
enabling the Basic DCP approach.

IPv6: promote the benefits of IPv6 in devices on home networks.

UPnP-v2: Make transition to Web Services as smooth as possible.

Objectives of IGD/WAP Committee

IGD




WAP



Enhancements to port mapping in v1
IPv6 support
Firewall configuration
Configuration of 802.11 access point parameters
Configuration of security to easily introduce new clients
(key plumbing)
Long term agenda is to harmonize the configuration,
control, and monitoring of networking gear for different
physical media including:




QoS,
Security,
configuration, &
diagnostics
Direction of Printing & Imaging
Strong focus on UPnP v2 due to interest in
enterprise deployment (where Web Services
are important) in addition to consumer
Basic Device DCP

Enables device vendors to ship product
based on private DCP

Intended to facilitate the adoption of
UPnP technology

Is not sufficient for certification and for
using the UPnP logo

Unless at one or more standardized
services are included
UPnP v1 is Rock Solid

Big investments went into v1





Fruition of three years of work
Spec is mature (industrial strength)
Deployment of certified devices has started
Availability of commercial tools
Support in Windows Me, XP, CE .NET & future
versions
UPnP v2

Align UPnP with Web Services

Motivation for v2



Unify development tools for UPnP devices and
Web services
Unify developer experience and knowledge
Unify protocols so that a single stack
communicates with both UPnP devices and
Web services
Progress on UPnP v2

Steering committee decided to adopt WSDL in
Oct 2001

Microsoft and IBM agreed to grant a RANDZ (no
royalty) license for the use of WSDL in the
context of UPnP devices

Official W3C committee working on the WSDL
schema language

Established a UPnP Forum Architecture
Committee for defining the UPnP v2
architecture
UPnP Architecture Process

Amendment to UPnP Forum member
agreement



Introduced an Architecture Committee
consisting of up to seven steering
committee members
Ratification of UPnP architecture spec.
requires unanimous approval by AC and
75% majority of the steering committee
Architecture is licensed for
implementations on multiple platforms
UPnP Implementers Corporation

26 member companies

14 certified gateway implementations

7 members on BoD
