President’s Message
D
ear brothers and sisters,
spring has sprung and
the warmer weather is
finally upon us. I hope you were
able to spend time with family and
friends over the Easter weekend and
celebrated at Buona Pasqua!
Last month’s general meeting was
host to our annual, and much
anticipated, Wine Tasting Contest.
I extend a thank you to Br. Livio DiNello and Judges Bob
Gibbon and Ron Speranzini for a very successful event. A
special thank you to all our participants and congratulations
to all our winners! Please read the insert for more details and
list of winners.
Tickets are still available for our Sopressata Contest on April
28, 2016. $40 – cash bar. The big attraction for this event is
that everyone brings their homemade specialties/antipasto to
share amongst each other. Bring your homemade Soppressata,
capicollo, prosciutto, cheeses, olives, peppers. Etc. to share and
show everyone how good yours is! A full dinner will follow!
Come hungry.
Also there are a few tickets available for our Elimination Draw.
The draw will be held on the night of our soppressata contest.
I remind everyone that the Elimination Draw and Soppressata
Contest are our main fundraising events for our charity budget!
ALL proceeds go to help local charities in our community. I
urge all of you to help support our charitable fundraising.
Looking forward, I wish to remind members of our upcoming
Spaghetti Dinner scheduled for Wednesday, May 18th. Please
mark your calendars and plan on attending. Tickets will
APRIL 2016
be available for purchase at the April general meeting, or by
contacting Br. Joe Mongiardi, Br. Tony Giardino, or any of your
executive.
More importantly there was a misprint in last month’s
newsletter regarding the golf tournament.
This year’s golf tournament will be held on THURSDAY JUNE
16, 2016
It is time to start thinking about your tomato plants and to
start preparing for summer. Local stores have their seeds and
planting kits out for sale. The days are getting longer and the
sun is getting warmer and staying out a bit longer each day. It is
time to plant your seeds and place them in your greenhouses or
your window sills. Happy Planting and good luck!
Also it is time to start planning your pruning of your fruit
trees. It looks to be another late start to spring this year, so it
important to be prepared for when the weather breaks. You
want to get out there and prune and apply an application of
dormant oil and lime sulphur before the buds break to try and
prevent pests and disease.
Our next general meeting is on April 12th, 2016. As is
customary, we will be initiating new members into our lodge.
Please show your support and respect by attending our April
meeting. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend, I will be on
vacation with my family in Florida. Our Vice President Loris
Pilot will be chairing the meeting.
Fraternally Yours,
Lou Filice

T
he Sons of Italy is hosting our
44th Annual Golf Tournament
at Glendale Golf and Country

Annual Charity Golf Classic has helped
our lodge raise thousands of dollars for
various charities. Without the dedication
of our volunteers, sponsors and golfers,
we could not have contributed to our
many worthwhile charities. This year’s
proceeds benefit the Juravinski Cancer
Centre Foundation. We hope you will
consider supporting our tournament
again by golfing, offering to be a sponsor
or donating a prize.
The cost of this year’s tournament is
$225 per golfer all inclusive, which
includes lunch, golf, cart, dinner and
prizes. The cost to attend the dinner
only is $50 (dinner to be held at Sons
of Italy Hall). Hole sponsorship is $150.

Buona Pasqua e Buon Appetito!
Recently, I received a letter from Maria Grazia in which she included a traditional Easter pasta recipe from Rome, Lazio. I am
passing it on to all of you in Italian. All you need to enjoy is family and a glass of wine. Auguri della mia cugina.
Br. Bob Savelli
2) Riempirla con un composto di ricotta, spinaci (precedente mente lessati) e un pizzico di noce moscata (Nutmeg), sale e pepe;
quanto basta.
Pasqua viene molto utilizzata nelle nostre ricette.
Fammi sapere l’esito, Sono curiosa!”
Buona Pasqua e buona salute a tutti da Roma,
Cugina Maria Grazia Silvi.
In fraternità,
Br. Bob Savelli
