Forma e funzione.
Così il design incontra la vita.
Da sempre l’architettura si pone come obiettivo quello di rendere
migliore la vita. Cosa non dovrebbe mancare mai in una casa ?
EG
Form and function.
This is how design and life come together.
Ritengo che il pensiero debba governare il progetto e quindi gli
spazi devono essere “spazi pensati”. Ogni progetto è un progetto
di vita, di sentimenti, di pensieri, che si concretizza negli oggetti,
negli ambienti... In una casa non dovrebbe mai mancare uno
studio, un luogo dove raccogliere se stessi. Mi piace definirlo un
“pensatoio”, un luogo intimo dove isolarsi e dedicarsi a ciò che
ci fa stare bene, dove prendersi una pausa, dove trovare rifugio
dalla frenesia esterna, dove dedicarsi alla lettura di un libro. Uno
spazio così, lo immagino possibilmente in assenza di tecnologia.
Gli ambienti domestici, siano essi all’interno di un grande
palazzo o di un monolocale, possono aiutarci a vivere meglio.
Il Made in Italy è ancora un valore ?
EG
Lavorando e seguendo progetti anche all’estero per committenti
stranieri, quotidianamente ho la conferma di quanto il Made
in Italy abbia un’altissima percezione e rappresenti un valore
aggiunto molto apprezzato e riconosciuto. A noi spetta il compito
di preservalo e alimentarlo. Abbiamo poi la fortuna di essere
un territorio dove artigianalità e innovazione camminano insieme,
dando vita a progetti tecnologicamente avanzati, con un altissimo
livello di finitura. Il Made in Italy continuerà ad essere sinonimo
di design, qualità e cura in ogni fase del processo produttivo.
questione di affinità dunque, che prevede che il design non segua
tendenze effimere ma sia utile e capace di durare nel tempo,
evolvendosi. La casa non è fortezza ma, grazie agli elementi
che la compongono, diventa un luogo con molteplici attività.
Così, nelle soluzioni e negli oggetti proposti da Novamobili
c’è un’attenzione particolare alla valorizzazione degli ambienti
intorno alla persona, con soluzioni disegnate su misura,
funzionali e personalizzabili.
A proposito di ambienti della casa, si parla sempre più spesso
di “spazi liquidi”. Lei come interpreta questo concetto ?
EG
diventando al tempo stesso elemento di comunicazione, divisione
e contenimento. Potremmo definirlo una sorta di un microcosmo
all’interno dello spazio abitativo, dove conservare ciò che è
importante per ognuno di noi.
Cosa racconta l’installazione realizzata per Novamobili in occasione della
Milano Design Week e quali novità verranno presentate ?
EG
Il progetto About 2016, pensato per la Milano Design Week,
si focalizza soprattutto sulla ricerca compiuta intorno all’oggetto,
che da semplice elemento d’arredo diventa una piccola
“architettura”, una costruzione. Con questo intervento prosegue
la ricerca in quelli che sono gli ambienti della vita quotidiana.
Le novità verranno inserite all’interno dell’installazione Separè,
un progetto che, grazie ad un sistema mobile, divide e mette
in collegamento gli spazi domestici. Si tratta di un percorso fatto
di funzioni in cui elementi bifacciali, aperti e chiusi, dialogano
tra loro in armonia e continuità. L’oggetto viene reinterpretato

Il presente è caratterizzato da profonde trasformazioni che hanno
avuto delle influenze sulle nostre città, sul nostro modo di vivere,
sugli spazi abitativi e non solo. Molte sono le questioni aperte.
Ognuno di noi cerca di comporre il proprio ambiente domestico
secondo esigenze specifiche. La tecnologia dopo aver permeato
i luoghi di lavoro sta inevitabilmente entrando anche nelle nostre
case. Anzi è già ampiamente presente. Gli spazi liquidi respirano,
pulsano... si aprono per accoglierci e si chiudono per difenderci.
Vivendo sempre più in una realtà fisica e virtuale insieme, a noi
spetta quindi il compito di progettare oggetti e ambienti in grado
di contenere funzioni diverse, sempre più complesse. Una sfida
importante, finalizzata ad una migliore qualità di vita anche
per quello che riguarda il benessere personale.
Quando progetta gli spazi domestici, su cosa rivolge la sua attenzione ?
Quali sono le principali fonti di ispirazione nei suoi progetti ?
EG
Sono affezionato ai progettisti del passato, ai padri del design.
Per loro ogni soluzione arredativa non doveva mai essere fine
a se stessa, ma porsi al servizio dell’ergonomia e della funzione.
Un messaggio quanto mai attuale che ho ritrovato anche nella
filosofia che da sempre guida le proposte di Novamobili. Una

Ascolto le esigenze del cliente e cerco di tradurre il tutto
in un disegno equilibrato. Cerco sempre la giusta proporzione
formale. Anche nei progetti di design; scegliendo forme semplici,
i materiali più adatti e dedicando grande attenzione alle finiture
e ai dettagli. L’architettura diventa un tessuto continuo che
si snoda dall’oggetto alla struttura, dalla casa alla città.
Dalla grande scala a quella più piccola.

was then and is echoed in the philosophy that has always steered
the Novamobili range. What it comes down to, then, is affinity,
whereby design, instead of bowing to fleeting trends, is required
to be useful and made to last, evolving as time passes. Rather
than a fortress, the home is the sum of its parts, turning it into
a place housing a whole host of different activities. So, in the
solutions and products offered by Novamobili, special attention
is focused on enhancing the rooms around people with functional
custom-designed solutions that can be tailored to fit the individual.
Talking of the home’s rooms, the term “fluid spaces” seems to be a growing
buzzword. How do you interpret this concept ?
EG
We are living in times of intense transformation, which has affected
our cities, the way we live, the spaces we call home, and so on.
There are still a lot of questions waiting for answers. We each
try to arrange our interiors around specific requirements. Having
permeated our workplaces, technology is inevitably working its
way into our homes, too. Or rather, it is already a big part of our
home lives. Fluid spaces breathe, pulsate... they open to welcome
us in and close to protect us. Living more and more, as we do,
in a reality that blurs the line between the physical and the virtual,
we are thus faced with the task of designing objects and interiors
that can house different, increasingly complex functions.
An important challenge, the end aim of which is to improve
quality of life, and that includes our own personal wellbeing.
When you design domestic spaces, what do you focus on ?
EG

The aim of architecture has always been to improve life. What should
no house ever be without ?
EG
What story does the installation produced for Novamobili as part of Milan
Design Week tell and what new products and ideas will be presented ?
EG
The About 2016 project, designed for the Milan Design Week,
focuses above all on research revolving around the object,
which goes from being a mere item of furniture to a small-scale
piece of “architecture”, a built structure. This project continues
my exploration of what are essentially the surroundings of our
everyday lives. New products will be included in the installation
entitled Separè, a project that uses a flexible system to divide
and connect domestic spaces. It is a path made up of functions
in which double-sided, open and closed elements enter into a
harmonious and continuous dialogue. The object is given a new
twist, becoming at once an element used to communicate, partition
and store. We might call it a sort of microcosm within the home
interior for keeping belongings that are important to each of us.
What are the main sources of inspiration in your projects ?
EG
I have a bit of a thing for designers from the past, the fathers
of design. For them, no furniture solution should ever be
a means unto itself and should instead cater to the requirements
of ergonomics and function. This message is as true today as it

I listen to the client’s requirements and try to translate the brief into
a balanced design. I am always looking for just the right formal
proportion. This goes for my design projects, too: choosing simple
shapes, the most suitable materials and focusing painstaking
attention to finishes and details. Architecture becomes a continuous
fabric that weaves its way from the object to the structure, from
the home to the city. From the large scale to the small.
I believe that thought should govern design and hence spaces
should be well “thought-out spaces”. Each design is a design
of life, of sentiments, of thoughts, which take tangible form in
objects, in rooms... No house should be without a study, a place
where you can collect your thoughts. I like to call it a “thinking
sanctuary”, an intimate place where we can cut ourselves off
from the world and concentrate on what makes us happy, where
we can take a time out, a haven removed from the craziness
of the outside world, somewhere we can curl up with a book.
I envisage this sort of space, where possible, as a tech-free
oasis. The rooms of our home, whether part of a large house
or a studio flat, can help us live better.
Does the “Made in Italy” label still carry value ?
EG
Working and handling projects both here and abroad for foreign
clients, every day I witness the highest regard in which the “Made
in Italy” label is held and how it represents a highly valued and
widely recognized added value. It is up to us to keep it that way
and fuel it. We are also lucky that here in Italy old-fashioned
craftsmanship goes hand in hand with innovation, spawning
technologically advanced designs finished to the highest standard.
The “Made in Italy” tag will continue to be synonymous with
design, quality and care at every stage of the production process.
