Etmaal 2016 Vrije Universiteit Brussel 2 - 3 juni Practical information Politicologenetmaal 2016 On Thursday June 2 and Friday June 3 2016 the ‘Politicologenetmaal’ (‘24-hour Political Science Conference’) is again jointly organised by the Association for Political Science (VPW) and the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP). This year the conference is organized by the Political Science Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. As always, the Etmaal will start on Thursday around lunch time and will close on Friday at approximately the same time. There will be 16 workshops. Their activities take place over the two days, with two sessions on Thursday afternoon and two sessions on Friday morning. Registration Participants who present a paper have to register and pay their registration fees before 20 May 2016. It is also possible to participate in the Etmaal without presenting a paper. Should you be interested in one of the sessions but do not wish to present a paper you do not need to contact the workshop conveners. You can apply for membership of the Dutch Political Science association or the Belgian Political Science association via the associations' websites. The fee includes a participants’ map, coffee/tea breaks, lunch on Thursday and Friday, and reception and dinner on Friday. Via the registration template, participants can inform the organizing committee on their dietary requests. When you fill out the registration template, you will be asked to complete your payment via an online portal (credit and debit card). Participants have to register and pay their registration fees before 20 May 2016. 2 Politicologenetmaal 2016 Accommodation Accommodation is not included in the registration fee. Brussels has plenty of good hotels on offer. Because the plenary lecture will take place in the city centre (see infra), we recommend you to book a hotel close to BOZAR, the Centre of Fine Arts, the venue of the plenary session. BOZAR is located in close proximity to the central railway station. A non-exhaustive list of hotels close to BOZAR is available here. Location The Politicologenetmaal will take place at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. All workshops will take place in Building D of the VUB campus Etterbeek. On-site registration, lunches and coffee/tea breaks will all take place in Building D. Throughout the conference, Palgrave will organise a book stand in Building D. The plenary session, award ceremony, reception and dinner on Thursday evening will take place in the city centre at BOZAR, the Centre of Fine Arts. Participant will receive a barcode; allowing them to access the VUB parking. This barcode will be emailed to participants in the week before the conference. The address of the VUB campus Etterbeek is: Pleinlaan 2 –1050 Brussels. 3 Politicologenetmaal 2016 Programme The main academic work is conducted in thematic workshops that run throughout four sessions. Two of these sessions take place on Thursday afternoon. On Thursday evening, the plenary session will take place at BOZAR, the Centre for Fine Arts. Professor Joni Lovenduski will give the plenary lecture ‘Does feminism need political science?’. Joni Lovenduski is Anniversary Professor of Politics at Birkbeck College, University of London. She has received numerous distinctions for her academic work. In 2007 she won the Political Studies Association Special Recognition Award for her contribution to political studies. In 2009 she won the Gender and Politics Award of the ECPR Standing Group on Gender and Politics. In 2013 she received the UK Political Studies Association’s Sir Isaiah Berlin prize for lifetime achievement in political studies. In 2014, politics and gender scholars paid tribute to her groundbreaking work with the edited volume ’Deeds and Words: Gendering Politics after Joni Lovenduski’ (edited by Rosie Campbell and Sarah Childs, ECPR Press). The lecture will be followed by the award ceremony, reception and dinner. Each year, the Dutch and Belgian associations jointly extend an award to the best master dissertation in Political Science (the Daniël Heinsius award) and the best PhD dissertation in Political Science (the ‘Jaarprijs Politicologie’). The Belgian association of Political Science will also honour some of its senior members with a lifetime achievement in Political Studies. On Friday morning, the workshops resume and the Politicologenetmaal closes with lunch.
