STUK, EEN HUIS VOOR DANS ­
APRIL - MEI 2016
De twee laatste maanden van het dansseizoen in STUK zullen niet onopgemerkt
voorbij gaan. Naast de gebruikelijke
voorstellingen en omkaderende activiteiten lanceren we twee nieuwe programma’s
die in deze brochure uitgebreid worden
toegelicht.
Op zaterdag 23 april organiseren we de Dag
van de Dans. Samen met talloze partners in
Vlaanderen en Brussel zet STUK hedendaagse dans in de kijker met een gevarieerd
programma voor jong en oud dat de brug
slaat naar urban dance en circus.
Op 19 en 20 mei presenteren we Extr’act,
een gebalde tweedaagse met uitdagend
werk van een nieuwe generatie makers.
Hiermee knopen we terug aan bij de sterke
reputatie die STUK heeft als creatieplek.
Dagelijks zijn er artiesten uit binnen- en
buitenland aan het werk in de studio’s
van STUK. Het is een goede graadmeter
om te peilen wat er artistiek leeft. Met
Extr’act bieden we het publiek de kans om
deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen op de voet
te volgen. Voor de eerste editie brengen
we Begüm Erciyas, Steven Michel, Danny
Neyman, Mathias Ringgenberg, Gabriel
Schenker en Hagar Tenenbaum samen.
Verder is het heel erg uitkijken naar de
langverwachte première van fABULEUS:
Popcorn. Tijdens de paasvakantie legt choreograaf Randi De Vlieghe de laatste hand
aan deze voorstelling voor drie mannelijke
dansers en een drummer. De opzwepende
kracht van percussie is van alle tijden en
culturen en vormt het vertrekpunt.
Intussen leggen we de laatste hand aan de
programmatie van het nieuwe seizoen. Er
zijn alvast premières gepland van Vera Tussing, Claire Croizé en Michiel Vandevelde.
Voor het Leuvense project Utopia organiseren we een projectweek rond participatieve
praktijken. Binnen Dubbeldans brengen we
o.m. repertoire van Rosas, Ultima Vez en
Eastman. Op 2 juni loods ik je persoonlijk
doorheen het volledige dansprogramma
16-17. Ik wil je hiervoor van harte uitnodigen.

The final two months of the dance season
at STUK will not go unnoticed. Next to the
usual performances and related activities
we launch two new programmes that will be
clarified in this brochure.
On April 23 we organize the Dance Day.
Together with numerous partners in Flanders and Brussels, STUK will put contemporary dance in the spotlight with a varied
programme for all ages, building bridges
towards urban dance and circus.
On May 19 and 20 we present Extr’act, a
compact two days with challenging work
from a new generation of makers. This way,
STUK links up with its strong reputation
as a space for creation. Every day, artists
from Belgium and abroad work in STUK’s
studios, offering a perfect indicator of what
artistic juices are flowing in the dance scene.
Extr’act offers the audience the chance to
follow these new developments very closely.
For the first edition we bring together
Begüm Erciyas, Steven Michel, Danny
Neyman, Mathias Ringgenberg, Gabriel
Schenker and Hagar Tenenbaum.
We’re also looking very much forward to the
première of fABULEUS: Popcorn. During
the Easter holiday choreographer Randi De
Vlieghe will finalize this performance for
three male dancers and a drummer. At the
core lies the rousing power of percussion, a
feature of all ages and cultures.
In the meantime we are finishing the
programme for the next season. There will
be premieres of new work by Vera Tussing,
Claire Croizé and Michiel Vandevelde. For
the project Utopia, we organise a whole
week on participative practices. In the
Dubbeldans series we will present repertoire
by Rosas, Ultima Vez and Eastman. On June
2nd I will personally guide you through the
new dance programme 16-17. I kindly invite
you to that presentation.

Met deze double bill introduceert STUK
de jonge Braziliaanse choreograaf
Volmir Cordeiro in Vlaanderen. In Céu
geeft hij gestalte aan marginale figuren in
een fysieke, bijna exhibitionistische krachttoer. In Inês belichaamt hij één vrouwelijk
personage uit de favelas. Inês wil bemind
worden en droomt ervan om een telenovellester te worden. Een onrustwekkend en
ontroerend portret.
With this double bill, STUK introduces
the young Brazilian choreographer Volmir
Cordeiro to Flanders. In Céu he gives shape
to marginal figures in a physical feat that
casts another look at minorities. In Inês,
Cordeiro embodies a female protagonist
from the favelas. Inês dreams of becoming
the star of a Telenovela. Cordeiro gets
under the skin of this character’s excessiveness. A disturbing and moving portrait.

De onweerstaanbare kracht van percussie is van alle tijden en van alle culturen.
Het is de motor van feesten en rituelen.
Percussie maakt mensen één, zweept ze op
en brengt ze in vervoering. Popcorn is een
onweerstaanbare krachtmeting tussen drie
jongenslijven en een drummer die live op
het podium speelt. Het dansplezier en de
muziek staan voorop.

De dubbele titel wijst op een ontmoeting
tussen Brian Eno’s Another Green World en
Shakespeares As You Like It, een zonderlinge komedie waarin verliefde personages
wegvluchten van een corrupte hofhouding
naar het idyllische woud van Arden.
The twin title refers to a meeting between
Brian Eno’s album Another Green World and
Shakespeare’s queer comedy As You Like it,
a play about an idyllic golden world of the
Forest of Arden into which lovers flee from
a corrupt court.

Percussion’s irresistible force belongs to
all times and cultures. It is the engine of
celebrations and rituals. It makes people
one, whips them up, and brings them into
rapture. Popcorn is an irresistible showdown
between three young male’s bodies and

Voor UNISON gaat de Argentijnse Cecilia
Lisa Eliceche aan de slag met één van de
meest gekende choreografische begrippen:
de unisono of het gelijktijdig uitvoeren van
eenzelfde beweging. Ze vraagt zich af of we
een gemeenschap kunnen herdenken aan
de hand van die klassieke formele choreografische ‘tool’. Eliceche is geïnteresseerd
in de manier waarop we

Rachid Ouramdane schetst in Tordre een
hypersensitief portret van twee danseressen wier eenvoudige, virtuoze bewegingen
een adembenemende schoonheid in zich
dragen. Tordre raakt de grens tussen het
‘normale’ en het ‘magische’. In de bewegingen en in de manier waarop we ontroerd
worden, ontdekt Ouramdane een verborgen
intimiteit. Wat onthullen onze bewegingen
over ons leven? Hoe komt het dat we elk
onze eigen manier hebben om te bewegen?

In Tordre, Rachid Ouramdane sketches
a hypersensitive portrait of two dancers
whose simple, virtuoso movements carry
a breathtaking beauty. Tordre navigates
the boundary between the ‘normal’ and the
‘magical’. Ouramdane discovered a hidden
intimacy in the movements and the way
they affect us. What do our movements
reveal about our lives? Why do we have our
own ways of moving?

For UNISON, Argentine dancer and choreographer Cecilia Lisa Eliceche addresses one
of choreography’s most famous concepts:
the unisono or simultaneous performing
of the same movement. She questions
whether we can commemorate a community on the basis of this classic and formal
choreographic ‘tool’. Eliceche is interested
in examining and redefining the way we
experience being together in society.

Canada, graduated from P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, and received a Master of Philosophy
at the Sorbonne in Paris. He combines his
interests in two short solos. From a contemporary perspective, Noé Soulier analyses the
vocabulary of classical ballet and in doing
so he proposes an alternative reading of
ballet’s legacy.
Noé Soulier genoot een opleiding als
balletdanser in Canada, studeerde af aan
P.A.R.T.S. in Brussel en behaalde een Master filosofie aan de Sorbonne in Parijs. In
twee korte solo’s brengt hij zijn interesses
samen. Vanuit een hedendaags perspectief
analyseert Noé Soulier het klassieke balletvocabularium en stelt zo een alternatieve
lezing van het balletnalatenschap voor.

Met Flip Book neemt de Franse choreograaf Boris Charmatz het werk van Merce
Cunningham, de Amerikaanse grootmeester van de postmoderne dans, onder de
loep. Daarvoor hanteert hij een bijzonder
procédé: de foto’s uit het boek Fifty Years
van David Vaughan vormen het script van
de voorstelling. Het boek bevat beelden
van Cunninghams oeuvre en tekeningen en
portretten achter de schermen. Samen met
een groep excellente dansers zet Charmatz
de beelden terug in beweging.
In Flip Book, the French choreographer
Boris Charmatz
puts the work of Merce
Cunningham – the American master
of postmodern dance – under the microscope. For
this he uses
a special process: photos from
the book Fifty Years by David Vaughan form
the performance’s script. The book includes
images of Cunningham’s work and drawings
as well as behind the scenes portraits. Together with a group of outstanding dancers,
Charmatz reanimates the images back into
movement.
Ballet, dat een vernieuwingsoperatie van
het klassieke ballet doorvoert, verovert
hij de internationale podia met zijn ervaringsgerichte, fysieke voorstellingen. As It
Empties Out is een creatie voor zes dansers
die zich nog het best laat omschrijven
als een delirium. Door een slim spel met
schaal, licht en diepte lijken de dansers zich
in een parallel universum te bevinden.
Since the Swedish Jefta van Dinther began
collaborating with the renowned Cullberg
Ballet, who are engaged with the renewal of
classical ballet, he has stormed the international stage with his experiential, physical
performances. As It Empties Out is a performance for six dancers that can best be described as a delirium. Through a clever play
of scale, light and depth the dancers seem to
find themselves in a parallel universe.

Schots en scheef is een pittige en
woordeloze danstheatervoorstelling waarin tafels torens worden en
nog zoveel meer! De tafels staan
echter scheef en al puzzelend zoeken Ciska en Lies een evenwicht.
Aan het eind van de voorstelling
mogen de kleuters ook zelf op verkenning, op en onder de tafels.
Schots en scheef is a snappy, wordless dance theatre performance
with tables turning into towers and
so much more! The only problem:
the tables don’t stand upright, so
Ciska and Lies try to figure out
how to balance them. At the end of
the performance, the toddlers can
explore on their own, on and under
the tables.

Rauw is een energieke dansvoorstelling met live muziek van Thomas Devos over spelen, dromen,
doen alsof, kind zijn ook als het
niet kan. Het gaat over opgroeien
in soms moeilijke omstandigheden,
gezien vanuit het perspectief van
kinderen. En over de volwassenen
die voor hen moeten zorgen, die
ondoorgrondelijk zijn, soms dichtbij, maar meestal ver weg.

Rauw is an energetic dance performance with live music by Thomas
Devos about playing, dreaming,
faking and being a child - even if
you can’t. It’s about growing up in
sometimes difficult circumstances, seen from the perspective of
children. And about the adults who
have to take care of them, who are
inscrutable, sometimes close, but
often far away.

Naar aanleiding
van de Dag van de
Dans tovert STUK
zichzelf om tot een
danshuis, waar
jong en oud kan
komen proeven
van hedendaagse
dans in al zijn facetten, inclusief urban
dance en circus. De blikvanger van de dag
is een OPEN STAGE: dansers uit Leuven
en daarbuiten palmen de Soetezaal in
met een korte choreografie of interventie.
Daarnaast zijn er diverse workshops rond
hedendaagse dans. Tijdens twee toonmomenten kan het publiek kennismaken met
twee bijzondere projecten waarin professionele dansers samenwerken met amateurs:

CROWD van DH+ en David Hernandez en
VIVA van De Genoten en Albert Quesada.
Voor de allerkleinsten en families is er de
peutervoorstelling Wegversperring van Nat
Gras. Op het binnenplein geven de dansers
van vzw Straatrijk het beste van zichzelf tijdens het kampioenschap BKing. ’s Avonds
presenteert STUK de solo ANECKXANDER
van Alexander Vantournhout en Bauke
Lievens. De avond wordt feestelijk afgesloten met een Dance Karaoke en wie wil,
kan blijven dansen tot in de vroege uurtjes
tijdens clubSTUK!

On April 23rd numerous organisations in
Flanders and Brussels will take part in the
first Dance Day. For this occasion STUK will
transform into a dance house where young
and old can taste from the different aspects
of contemporary dance including urban and
circus. Highlight of the day is OPEN STAGE: dancers from Leuven and beyond claim
the Soetezaal stage for a short choreography
or intervention. You can also follow workshops on contemporary dance or attend two
showings of special projects in which professional dancers work together with amateurs:
CROWD by DH+ and David Hernandez and
VIVA by De Genoten. For the toddlers and
families we present Wegversperring. On the
inner courtyard the dancers of vzw Straatrijk
give the best of themselves during the
BKing championship. In the evening STUK
presents the acclaimed solo ANECKXANDER. The evening will be concluded festively by a Dance Karaoke and a clubSTUK for
those who would like to dance until dawn.

Al spelend met ritme, bewegingskwaliteiten
en verschillende perspectieven exploreren
we de verstrengeling van dans en film. Je
krijgt een aantal videotechnieken aangeleerd; daarna ga je zelf aan de slag en maak
je een eigen dansfilm door gebruik te maken van de verschillende locaties in STUK.
In a playful way you’ll explore the connection between dance and film. After being
taught a few video techniques you’ll make
your own dance film by using STUK’s different locations.

Claire Croizé past in deze workshop een
aantal technieken toe uit haar nieuwe
creatie EVOL. Twee per twee en stap per
stap gaan we op zoek naar de muzikaliteit
van beweging.

De Genoten is een collectief van 20
mannelijke amateurdansers. Ze nodigden
choreograaf Albert Quesada uit, die samen
met hen een choreografie maakte op muziek van de Vier Seizoenen, waarin kijken
en luisteren centraal staat.
De Genoten is a collective of 20 male amateur dancers. Together with choreographer
Albert Quesada, they developed a choreography to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons focusing
on watching and listening.

Balancerend op de fijne grens tussen tragedie en komisch effect, herschrijft Alexander
de autobiografie van zijn eigen lichaam.
Wat ontstaat is een rauw zelfportret waarin
het lichaam zich tegelijk blootstelt en
tracht te ontsnappen aan de blik van hen
die kijken.
Balancing on the fine line between tragedy
and comedy, Alexander rewrites the autobiography of his own body: from subject to
object to matter. The result is a raw self-portrait that exposes the body and tries to get
away from the viewer’s gaze.

De blikvanger van de dag wordt de OPEN
STAGE waar we dansers uit Leuven en
daarbuiten selecteerden voor een choreografie of interventie in de Soetezaal. Het
wordt een bonte verzameling van dansstijlen.

Steven Michel is gefascineerd door geluid,
ritme, animatie en beeld. Het resultaat van
die fascinatie is They Might Be Giants, een
solo op het snijvlak van dans en concert.
Michel neemt je mee naar een plek waar
muziek en beeld onze verbeelding prikkelt
en onze perceptie in de war brengt. They
Might Be Giants stelt de relatie tussen het
artificiële en het natuurlijke, het levendige en het levenloze, het etherische en het
monumentale in vraag.
Steven Michel is fascinated by sound, rhythm, animation and image. They Might Be
Giants is a combination of dance and music.
Michel takes his audience to a place where
music and image excite our imagination
and confuse our perception. What is ‘actually’ happening here? They Might Be Giants
poses questions about the relationships between the artificial, the natural, the lively, the
lifeless, the ethereal and the monumental.

PRICE laat hem toe om de mechanismen
van mainstream pop te onderzoeken en te
experimenteren met muzikale en performatieve formats. Zijn werk muteert voortdurend en kan telkens anders ervaren worden,
van showroom tot club.

In de installatie Voicing Pieces onderzoekt
Begüm Erciyas de poëtische en politieke
kracht van de stem. Geloftes, getuigenissen, gebeden, maar ook gedichten verwerven pas hun performatieve kracht als ze
uitgesproken worden. Voicing Pieces zoomt
dieper in op de act van het spreken. In een
intieme setting luistert het publiek naar de
eigen stem, al was het een theater.
In the installation Voicing Pieces, Begüm
Erciyas researches the poetical and political
power of the voice. Vows, testimonies,
prayers ... but also poems acquire (show)
only their performative power when spoken
out. Voicing Pieces focuses on the act of
speaking. In an intimate setting visitors
can listen to their own voice as if it were a
theatre.

Helsinki is een ‘one-man spoken-word
work-in-progress’ dat speelt met subjectieve polyfonie en taal op drift. Zich vermenigvuldigende tekstfragmenten worden live bij
elkaar gevoegd en uit elkaar gehaald, half
willekeurig, tot breekbare, ongrijpbare betekenistapijten. Helsinki is enkel stem, maar
opent ruimte voor visuele verbeelding en
speelt met abstractie en cinematografische
kwaliteiten.
Helsinki is a one-man spoken-word work-inprogress that experiments with subjective
polyphony and language drift. Ever-multiplying text fragments are live-edited
together in a half-random process to create
fragile illusive tapestries of sense. Consisting purely of voice, the performance opens
a space for the release of the visual, while
playing on abstractions of cinematographic
qualities.

Voor Stanza verzamelt Hagar Tenenbaum
tekstfragmenten gebaseerd op haar visueel geheugen: details van wandelingen,
boeken, films, YouTube, theezakjes en conversaties. Ze memoriseert de teksten, zet
ze om in ritme en verweeft ze in bestaande
songs. Simultaan met de onophoudelijke
woordenstroom ontvouwt er zich een
choreografie voor de handen. Met een fijn
gevoel voor eenvoud en humor analyseert
ze zichzelf en haar omgeving, waarbij ze
afwisselend de rol van observator en geobserveerde aanneemt.
Hagar Tenenbaum collects text excerpts
based on her visual memory: details of
walks, books, films, YouTube, tea bags and
conversations. She memorizes the texts,
transposes them in rhythms and intertwines
them within existing songs. Simulataneously with this unceasing stream of words,
a choreography of hands arises. With a
delicate feeling for simplicity and humour,
she analyses herself and her environment,
switching between observer and observed.

In Pulse Constellations deconstrueert
en reconstrueert Gabriel Schenker John
McGuire’s elektronische compositie Pulse
Music III uit 1978, een muziekstuk gebaseerd op een auditief beeld van beweging
in de ruimte. Een kaleidoscoop aan ritmes
en coördinaties doorkruist zijn lichaam in
overlappende tempo’s. Hij onderzoekt de
scheidingslijn tussen het wiskundige en het
organische, de digitale precisie van elektronische muziek en de analoge imprecisie
van dans, de grenzen tussen het dansbare
en het hoorbare.

of movement in a room. A caleidoscope of
rhythms and coordinations intersects his
body in overlapping tempos. He explores
the borders between the mathematical and
the organic, between the digital precision of
electronic music and the analogue imperfections of dance, between the danceable and
the audible.

als inspiratiemateriaal voor het ontwikkelen van beweging, voorbij meer structurele
en formele patronen.
This workshop will focus on the principle
‘My talking is my dancing’ that Anne Teresa
De Keersmaeker/Rosas has been investigating for the creation of Golden Hours (April
15 and 16, see p. 4). The intention of speaking as approach to movement to inspire
dancers beyond formal-structural patterns,
increasing the sense of meaningfulness
without explicit meaning will be the core
subject of this workshop.

voor de uitbouw van een participatief

WISPER have years of experience running
artistic course for adults, using unique
methods. STUK has invited WISPER to become one of the core partners in developing
the participative dance programme. The
result is a rich range of contemporary dance
courses at STUK.

HEDENDAAGSE DANS: THEORIE & ANALYSE
Het Departement Culturele Studies van
de KU Leuven en STUK richten samen het
vak Hedendaagse dans: theorie en analyse
in. De studenten worden er ingewijd in de
belangrijkse tendenzen van de hedendaagse dans. Na een grondige inleiding over
hedendaagse dans in de 20ste en 21ste
eeuw volgt een capita selecta met verschillende gastdocenten. Er worden verbindingen gelegd met de programmatie in STUK:
studenten wonen een selectie van voorstellingen, nagesprekken en lezingen met
vertegenwoordigers van het veld bij. Een
aantal van deze activiteiten zijn publiek
toegankelijk (voertaal: Engels).
The Cultural Studies department of the KU
Leuven offers the course Contemporary
dance : theory and analysis, which will be
lectured at STUK. Students are initiated
in contemporary dance’s most important
tendencies, with a special focus on certain
topical questions in dance theory. After a
thorough introduction on contemporary
dance in the 20th and 21st century, several
guest lecturers will give capita selecta.
There lectures will be linked with STUK’s
programme: students will attend a selection
of performances, after talks and lectures
with representatives of the dance scene.
Some of these activities will be open for
everyone (language: English).
