SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS
MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK-We urge Orthodox
Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable
to attend church (hospitalized or at home) to contact the church office
so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them.
If your loved one is hospitalized please call us, even if the illness is
not serious! In a wholistic approach to healing and well-being, a
visit from the priest can be very positive. Most hospitals do not
inform us when they receive patients from our parish. We depend
on you!
BLESSINGS OF INFANTS—Forty days after birth, a child and its
mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ
who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please
call the church office to arrange this blessing.
BAPTISMS—Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms.
Plan ahead!—there are some days when Baptisms are not performed.
Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child
is supposed to be given one name when he or she is baptized.
WEDDINGS—Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least
eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all
necessary marriage preparation.
CONFESSION—Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please
call the church office to schedule Confession.
MEMORIAL SERVICES—Memorial Services are offered for the
eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at
3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls.
END OF LIFE ISSUES
1 - The Right to a Proper Funeral
It is an honor to have a church funeral. When the funeral does not
take place at the church it indicates that someone is not in good order.
Sometimes out of convenience, we consider omitting a church funeral
for our loved ones, not realizing that we are depriving them of their
right to be honored. Let us honor our parents and relatives with the
respect they deserve!
2 - About Cremation
We believe that in the General Resurrection, our bodies and souls
will be restored to each other. Cremation is the deliberate desecration
and destruction of what God has made, and is viewed as the denial of
the Resurrection.
In cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person
to be cremated, thus choosing to disregard our understanding of the
Resurrection, the honor of a church funeral is not given, either in the
church, or the funeral home or any other place.
Additionally, memorial services with kolyva are not allowed, since
the connection of the “kernel of wheat” as a sign of the Resurrection
has been intentionally destroyed.

April 2016
Dear Stewards and Friends,
We have now completed more than half of our Lenten journey.
Soon we will go up to Jerusalem with Jesus. Great Lent empowers us
to put away our worldly cares and distractions, and to purify ourselves
to be prepared and worthy to complete this journey with Him! Please
invest yourself and your family in the Lenten passage from our fallen
world to eternal Life!
Soon we will be celebrating Pascha! Don’t you think it’s time
we stopped calling it “Greek Easter?” Isn’t it weird to call the nonOrthodox Easter “American Easter” since we are Americans, too?
As Orthodox Easter (or “Pascha”) approaches, we should
remind ourselves that we gather not just to remember that the Lord
arose, but to WORSHIP His Crucifixion and Resurrection, and to
rejoice. Proclaiming “Christ is Risen” must be more meaningful than
saying “Beautiful weather we’re having!” Pascha is not about bunnies
or food; it is about life and death, heaven and hell, and gratitude to God
for His love and sacrifice for us.
But before we get there, we have a full schedule! Tuesday
night, April 19, is the beautiful Pan-Orthodox Akathist at the New
Gracanica Serbian Monastery in Grayslake. Then we have our annual
Easter Bake Sale on Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21. You can
shop for Easter bread, tsourekia, red eggs and other home-made goodies! Bring your friends, too!
April 24 is the Saturday of Lazaros. We celebrate the glorious miracle of Jesus raising Lazaros from the dead! There will be
Liturgy that morning, followed by our annual Family Retreat—
crafts, lessons, lunch, and projects for moms, dads, children and
grandparents together! Plan to be there!
Don’t forget to make your reservations for our annual,
delicious Palm Sunday Luncheon, too!
Looking ahead, this year we will have a new celebration on Bright
Saturday, May 7 (not Friday): a competitive Lamb Cook-Off! (See
page 5 for more information.)
We have all these occasions to celebrate! It is so fitting that
we can celebrate our holidays both as spiritual and as social events.
By doing so in sacrament, prayer, food and song, we understand the
unity of our souls and bodies as we strive to grow closer to one another and to God! No one celebrates Pascha like the Orthodox!
ΚΑΛΟ ΚΑΙ ΑΓΙΟ ΠΑΣΧΑ!
HAPPY AND BLESSED PASCHA!

EXPANSION PROJECT UPDATE
As we move forward with planning for the expansion of our
Community Center, we are working with General Contractors
to value engineer the design in a manner that maximizes the
functionality of the new space while minimizing the construction
cost. Our Expansion Committee will continue to refine the design
and select the General Contractor whom we believe is best
qualified to build our expanded Community Center.
As our fundraising campaign continues, we have accumulated
pledges for a little over 30% of the project cost. Before construction can begin, we need pledges for 60% of the project cost. This
means that we are currently half way to construction! We wish
to thank those of you have already sent in your pledge forms.
You can be confident that your support will help provide a legacy
that our Community will cherish for many years into the future.
Over the past few months, we have spoken with many Stewards
and they whole-heartedly believe that the additional facilities
included in the expansion of the Community Center are critical to
the future of our schools and other ministries. If you believe in
this project, please pledge your financial support. Our target for
each Steward family is a $5,000 to $10,000 pledge, which can be
paid over the next three years.

STEWARDSHIP 2016!
What does your church mean to you?
What does your church offer to you?
What keeps the doors open to serve your needs?
How important is Baptism, Holy Communion, forgiveness and
the many other blessings you derive from your church?
 What gives the church the “fuel” to power its activities and programs?
A N S W E R: Your STEWARDSHIP!
These are the questions we should ask when we determine our
level of stewardship every year! Everyone should have a different
stewardship level from everyone else, and every year it should
change according to our means and our love! Our stewardship level should be an amount that reflects our growing love of God and
our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our
Church.
If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so.
There is no minimum, but true stewardship means heartfelt giving
in proportion to our resources and income. You belong here!

THE FIRST ANNUAL ST HARALAMBOS LAMB ROAST COMPETITION!
Who can roast the best lamb? We think it’s time to find out so we are holding the First Annual St.
Haralambos Lamb Roast Competition on Bright Saturday, May 7 at St. Haralambos.
Sign up your team for what promises to be a fun community event. Not only will we have impartial judges
tasting the lamb but we will be selling tickets for members of the community and other communities to come
and join in the fun!
There is a $50 entry fee per team and each team will be responsible to provide their own lamb (35-40 lbs)
and cooking method. St. Haralambos will provide electricity (bring your own extension cords) and a six foot
table for each team. Teams will have access to their spots beginning at 10 am on May 7 and the lambs will
need to be completed and ready for serving by 5 pm.
If you just want to eat instead of cooking, you can buy a ticket to sample the various entries, enjoy a full
dinner and the music, and have a fun-filled evening! The donation is only $20.
Help us celebrate Pascha as a community and raise some funds for our Phase III building project. To enter
a team, please call the Church office and leave a message for Ted Karabatsos or Tom Kanelos. We will need
