Through age, illness or accident, people can lose their capacity to understand the nature and
consequences of proposed medical treatment. Health care decisions then fall to families, friends
and physicians who may not be aware of the patient’s wishes.The freedom to decide one’s own
destiny is the right of every competent person. This includes the right to accept or refuse medical
treatments. But if we become critically ill, we may not be able to make these decisions.
The purpose of this course is to help you take control of and record your wishes for your health
and personal care for a future time. If you are unable to speak for yourself, the ‘Let Me Decide’
Advance Care Directive will speak for you. It is your Living Will. Gives each individual the
opportunity to choose different levels of treatment according to his or her wishes.
Helps relieve family and friends of responsibility for decisions in times of crisis.
Guides health care practitioners in making vital decisions when family members are unavailable.
Has received enthusiastic support from a wide variety of individuals and groups, including
doctors, patients, nurses, solicitors, clergy, and advocates for the elderly and the disabled.
