MESSAGE FOR THE MEN’S WATER POLO
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION TOURNAMENT 2016
Trieste (ITA) – April 3-10
It is my great pleasure to welcome all the players, coaches
and officials to the FINA Men’s Water Polo Qualification
Tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games. In Trieste, Italy, 12 of
the best teams of the world will fight, from April 3-10, for one of
the four places that guarantees the presence in Rio de Janeiro
(BRA) next August. So far, eight nations have already their ticket
for the Olympic celebration: Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Greece,
Japan, Montenegro, Serbia and USA.
Historically, Italy has a strong tradition in the first Olympic
team sport. Its water polo teams have shone at the highest level and this tournament will
certainly attract an enthusiastic crowd to support the participating squads. Everything
in Trieste is ready to host a great competition!
I take this opportunity to express FINA’s gratitude to the Italian Swimming
Federation, the Organisers of the Qualification Tournament, the local authorities of
Trieste and all those involved in this organisation.
In this vibrant atmosphere, our best water polo players will certainly get inspired
to search for an Olympic place in the Brazil. The Olympic dream is surely in every
athlete’s mind and constitutes an additional motivation for a superb event, in the spirit
of fair-play and friendship.
I wish all the luck to the participating teams in this tournament.
Dr. Julio C. Maglione
FINA President
3
Dear Friends,
Personally and on behalf of the Italian Swimming
Federation, I express my warmest greetings to athletes,
coaches, staff members, volunteers, managers, referees and
delegates who will participate at the FINA Men’s Water Polo
Olympic Games Qualification Tournament to be held in Trieste
at the “Bruno Bianchi” Aquatic Center from 3 to 10 April 2016.
The Italian Swimming Federation is proud to organize
such an important international event. After the Women Olympic
Qualification Tournament in 2012, the City of Trieste will welcome
the world top water polo Men teams which will compete for the last pass to Rio 2016.
I wish all the best to Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Slovakia, South
Africa, Kazakhstan, Romania, Spain, Hungary, Russia and Italy, certain to assist at
the greatest water polo show underling the beauty of this exciting aquatic discipline.
The warmest thanks to FINA, in particular to the President Julio Maglione, for
the highest honor given to the Italian Swimming Federation.
It is also my duty to thank the local Authorities and the Rai Sport TV Director for
the heavy commitment to play the role of host broadcaster of the event.
Paolo Barelli
President of the Italian Swimming Federation

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF TRIESTE
ROBERTO COSOLINI
“Trieste is proud to host, from 3rd to 10th April 2016, at the
“Bruno Bianchi” Swimming Complex the FINA Men’s Water Polo
Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.
It’s the most important sport event to be held in our city and
throughout the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in this Olympic year.
Trieste, thanks to the consolidated collaboration with Italian
Swimming Federation, will be directly in touch with the Rio Olympics 2016 and many
fans will support even the Italian Settebello that, after the Italian Setterosa, cam obtain
the participation to the Olympics.
Through the media from around the world and to the Rai Sport TV coverage,
it will be an opportunity to promote a city that has a long sport tradition and a great
hospitality culture.
As Mayor of Trieste I wish that all participating teams will perform extraordinarily
on the sport aspects and will be able to visit and appreciate our city.”
Roberto Cosolini
Mayor of Trieste

TRIESTE
Trieste is the most international city in the region, suspended between a glorious past
of “Little Vienna on the Sea” and the present cosmopolitan city.
From the Audace pier to the old Lanterna, there is a succession of sails, antique shop
window displays, shops and beautiful buildings: in the distance, one can glimpse the white
profile of Miramare, the romantic castle of Maximilian and Charlotte of Hapsburg.
A journey of discovery of the city’s history, literature and art, from the Roman era to
medieval wonders, to the Habsburg splendour.
The wealth of architectural styles in the palaces in Trieste is remarkable: Neoclassical,
Art Nouveau, Eclecticand Baroque, coexisting in a harmonious blend with Roman remains,
eighteenth century buildings and Hapsburg style buildings.
Coffee is one of the flagship products of Trieste. A Free Port for the importation of coffee
since the eighteenth century, the port of Trieste is the most important in the Mediterranean
for the trade of coffee: the beans that arrive here are not only intended for local coffee
roasters but also for those all around the world.
But coffee in Trieste is also in rhythm with literature: many and beautiful are the literary
cafes, which are historical premises with retro charm, frequented by poets and writers
such as James Joyce, Italo Svevo, and Umberto Saba. Taking a coffee break in one of the
historical cafes of Trieste is a real ritual that is absolutely not to be missed and whose appeal
has spread even through word of mouth. Would you like to know what a gocciato or a taste
of a capo in b is? Then you must come to Trieste, because you will only find out here…
Trieste is also a mixture of religions: this is evident as soon as you arrive in the city,
which, for many centuries, has had (amongst others) a Greek Orthodox Church, a Serbian
Orthodox Church, a Synagogue, a Lutheran Evangelical Church and, the oldest of all, a
Swiss Evangelical Church.
Trieste means love of the sea too: people here love going to the sea, and the beach
resorts - or ‘bagni’, in local slang - are frequented all the year round, for sunbathing, swimming
or just strolling.
At the back of Trieste, the Karst plateau with a natural landscape of great beauty,
scattered with typical villages and natural caves.
