Description
Walden, or, Life in the Woods, is an American book written by noted transcendentalist Henry
David Thoreau. The work is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment,
voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and manual for self-reliance. Published in 1854, it details
Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amid
woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord,
Massachusetts.
Insightful reviews
Lindsay: I'm reading this right now on my travels around Illinios and Michigan. How many other
books are you going to read that devote four entire pages to describing the way the ice on a
pond in winter looks and feels? Thoreau is very disapproving of his fellow humans and society
(in a very self-righteous punk sort of way) and it makes you feel like a) maybe you're not just a
grumpy misanthrope for feeling that way and b)nostalgia for a better time is pretty stupid. After
all, who really wants to live in a world where they have nothing to criticize and work to improve
or, even worse, no reason to feel even a little bit superior?
Whitney Archibald: I read this in high school, college, and am skimming it now for book club. I
have a lot of nostalgia wrapped up in this book, partly because I have the same copy I first read
and by now have lots of highlighted sections and notes in the margins. I learn something new
each time I read it. Mostly, it reminds me that I am a nature girl at heart and that after living
almost exclusively outdoors during my childhood (hiking, fishing, rock climbing, swimming in the
river, etc.), I now spend waaay to much time inside.
Sometimes I think Thoreau is loony, sometimes brilliant, but always thought-provoking, and a lot
funnier than I remembered. I prefer to read it in small doses, not cover to cover.
John Wiswell: Woefully overwritten to the point where most modern readers who might be
moved by Thoreau’s transcendentalism will be put off by the prose alone. If that doesn’t get
them, his elitist attitude probably will. Thoreau took Ralph Waldo Emerson’s ideals of choosing
for yourself and added, “but you’re an idiot if you don’t choose mine.” Too many of his asides
are condescending views of society or normal people, evidencing that Thoreau was stuck on
other people even if he claimed to be independent or above them. Every few years I’ll fool
myself into thinking this book isn’t as bad as I remember, but even last month when I helped a
girl with her paper on it, I was reminded that it truly is a dreadful love affair between a writer and
his own thoughts. For a clearer, shorter, nearly crystallized version of Thoreau's thoughts in his
own words and illustrated by some firmer anecdotes, see his "Civil Disobedience."
Chris Bradshaw: while Henry Thoreau went to Walden Pond in 1845, i'm wondering what he
relatively concept he used to be doing there. i'm wondering if he had moment suggestions in
regards to the complete idea; even though whilst he begun it used to be July, and July is an
effective month to be outdoors, regardless of the weather. The man, and what he did and the
way he lived and what he lived for have continuously been a resource of concept to me, and to
many others... Walden is far a couple of man's account of the years he spent within the woods
communing with nature; it's a assertion of defiance. Thoreau was once proficient at Harvard,
and spent it slow as a instructor the place he despaired of the assumption of lecture room
learning. He had a good admire for the local Americans, admiring their hardiness and skill. He
could not comprehend why humans considered them as inferior. To him, they have been clever
and powerful and extra in track with truth than the farmer together with his insulated life. He
enjoyed wisdom, and stated an enlightened society in keeping with compassion and simplicity.
He didn't align himself explicitly with any non secular view...he used to be a philosophical
person. Solitude was once what he valued, not only simply because he used to be a thinker, but
in addition simply because he believed it made you a greater person, a extra autonomous mind.
those ideas, and the type of life they represent, are very important for me simply because i feel
that we are wasting anything very crucial...not simply within the actual lack of the normal
environment, but additionally within the religious environment, that's reliant upon it. If it was
once visible a hundred and fifty years ago, it's now the de facto reality, and the query is: what is
going to it's like a hundred and fifty years from now?So...what are we imagined to do
approximately it? you will find how large the matter is: international warming, overpopulation,
poverty, company hegemony... You examine it all, and it flooring you; you cannot see the sides
of it simply because it is all round you, everywhere. it truly is simply how issues are...it's what
you are used to seeing. And it truly is horrible, yet that is additionally permitted to a undeniable
degree...the wrongness of it's tolerated simply because humans think powerless, or bogged
down, or perhaps they are simply bored with trying...all legitimate issues and extremely
comprehensible ones. i believe Henry might examine it because of a compulsively advanced
culture, and when you examine the massiveness of what we have now done, the sheer
dimension of our footprint, possibly you will find it too. Going to the woods ain't gonna lower it...
yet for the folks who believe the best way Henry felt, who see what he observed within the deep
waters of Walden Pond, the choice of inactiveness is not any choice at all. the true strength of
his phrases is within the activities of these they inspire...the strong humans doing the labor of
attempting to make this tradition an easier one, and perhaps they will be successful and
perhaps they won't...the price is within the attempt. It starts off with an idea; rules are the seeds
of change, they're what our tradition rests upon. But, like a seed, they are going to turn into not
anything with no the right kind cognizance and care. the simplest one's switch the world, the
worst one's carry the realm to it is knees...which is the place we're now. Is it a good suggestion
to proceed polluting the planet after we recognize that it'll kill us within the end? No, yet that
continues. Is it a good suggestion to pamper the rich and tax the poor? No, yet that continues.
humans see this stuff and ignore Walden Pond since it turns out small and ineffectual. It says
anything concerning the spirit of a society while the easiest rules are purposefully deserted for
shiny, complicated, undesirable one's. however the those who gain so much from the
undesirable principles are the folk who're successfully working the show. and they costume
them up and provides them attention-grabbing titles and wrap them in fascinating applications
and peddle them pretty much as good one's. Henry outfitted his domestic with the timber he
took from the wooded area surrounding the pond at Walden. He outfitted it with instruments he
borrowed from his neighbors, in strong faith, and used recycled fabrics for what he could not get
from the woods. It was once an exceptional condo and it stored him hot within the winter, cool in
the summertime and dry whilst it rained. the good knowledge of his lifestyles used to be in how
he lived it, with care and appreciation and appreciate for what was once in his environment. Is it
a good suggestion to dwell as a student, regardless of your age? Yes, and in addition to be a
instructor of fine ideas, as Henry was.Thoreau stayed at Walden Pond for 2 years, wrote
broadly in his journal, then left. He can have stayed, I suppose, yet solitude isn't anything which
advantages forever. i believe he says as much, notwithstanding i am not sure. He stayed
lengthy adequate to profit what he wanted to, then he moved on. there's knowledge in that, too.
Take what you wish and depart the rest. issues are changing, regardless of the way it turns out
sometimes. everyone is angry. they are bored with being scared. possibly they might not visit
the woods; probably that isn't even an choice anymore. The "woods" now are extra a kingdom
of mind, an international view. no matter what happens, Walden can be there, as jam-packed
with sturdy rules because it ever was...because a very stable suggestion will regularly be good,
it doesn't matter what the censors say.
Luís Blue Yorkie: Walden is the lake identify at the shorelines the place Henry David Thoreau
outfitted a hut and reside for greater than years. There he observes and writes approximately
trees, leaves, water, ice, the seasons... Is a booklet approximately life, written in a manner so
uncomplicated and so profound that I frequently have to re-read and examine a sentence or
bankruptcy to understand... I confess that usually i spotted that the writer noted issues that have
been easily past my skill to understand and my existence experience. Walden replaced my
outlook on life, in a tangible way. it's a e-book that would remain on my bookshelf to be learn
again in a couple of years, while i am extra mature and extra experienced. i think he
nonetheless has treasures to find me in his pages.
