Description
Natsuo Kirino's novel tells a story of random violence in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young
mother who works a night shift making boxed lunches brutally strangles her deadbeat husband
and then seeks the help of her co-workers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime.
The ringleader of this cover-up, Masako Katori, emerges as the emotional heart of Out and as
one of the shrewdest, most clear-eyed creations in recent fiction. Masako's own search for a
way out of the straitjacket of a dead-end life leads her, too, to take drastic action.
The complex yet riveting narrative seamlessly combines a convincing glimpse into the grimy
world of Japan's yakuza with a brilliant portrayal of the psychology of a violent crime and the
ensuing game of cat-and-mouse between seasoned detectives and a group of determined but
inexperienced criminals. Kirino has mastered a Thelma and Louise kind of graveyard humor
than illuminators her stunning evocation of the pressures and prejudices that drive women to
extreme deeds and the friendship that bolsters them in the aftermath.
Insightful reviews
Bark's Book Nonsense: This is a great book about a group of late shift female co-workers at a
boxed lunch factory. It is extremely effective in portraying the desperation in their day to day
lives and shows how even the most gruesome of deeds can become just another yucky job if
the pay is good enough. It's so violent that, at times, it's almost funny and still very sad and
frighteningly realistic as well. This was one of those impossible to put down books but it isn't for
the faint of heart as it gets quite grisly.
Preeta: What a disappointing ending! At first, I was absolutely entralled by the characters and
their various relationships. The first 3/4ths of the book are filled with so much texture - it felt like
I was running my hands through a fabric store. Most intriguing are the female-female
relationships ranging from trust to need to fear. How I hated Kuniko! How I rooted for Masako!
And then, this whole S&M dark and violent erotic stuff comes out, which threw the entire book in
downward-spiral away from nuance and substance to blatant sex and desire. I thought Masako
was stronger than the Stockholm syndrome! I forced myself to finish and can say that while I did
enjoy reading about underground Tokyo - why would anyone waste their time reading about it
when they can watch a movie that is effortless and as simple?
Gregsamsa: Isn't it weird how some sensations can be intensified by the presence of another,
different, sensation? You know, like when you have to pee and you're also really cold?
So many horror writers are bad horror writers because they pack everything onto the back of
one horse, horror, and run it to the end. Once a horrific event is reduced to print, it's not the
same as horror, so needs more. For me the horrific in itself is rarely enough.
Folks might reasonably quibble over whether Out is a horror novel, but horror is its key
emotional theme and it's entirely successful in supplying the right attendant intensifiers. It
makes you drink two pots of coffee and then locks you in a walk-in freezer.
I often cringe at how the USA is portrayed in movies and television shows for international
audiences, but I wonder what the Japanese think of their media representation: orderly, polite,
prosperous, neat, cute.
Out: this is not that Japan. Think shit jobs, crappy housing, festering domestic strife, and urban
depression. Now those are some nicely calibrated accompanying atmospherics for intensifying
horror.
For me, anyway. I don't respond much to "scary" books or movies that give us an otherwise
comfortable person being chased through their mansion by a killer or ghost, no matter how
much tension is built up as it continues in room after room after room. The threat, the fear, the
dread must come from more than one direction. It should come from all sides. Ideally, it
envelopes.
Super-ideally, it also spawns from within, like the need to pee as temperatures descend.
But the unpleasantries that the world of this novel speaks to its protagonists are no mere
chorus; they blend and fuse to form a unified malaise. For example, the soul-crushing nature of
an assembly line job of scooping rice into its slot in a pre-packaged lunch factory melds with this
worker's disgust for her own body: she is poor, overworked, and unattractive, in pain, and the
only salves she can see are compensatory cosmetic indicators of beauty and wealth--designer
clothes and a flashy car--as well as literal cosmetics. But these become dated fast and there's
always something newer and better and the only way to catch up is to get behind, in debt. Debt
and worry exacerbate the original problems to more desperate degrees, inviting new
degradations of dignity and security in the form of alienated friends and circling loan sharks.
And this is just a side character!
While the characters are despairing victims of circumstance, they are not agency-free
mannequins buffeted by plot points. The interplay between self and circumstance is too
dynamic for that. Pardon my abstractions but given people's sensitivity to spoilers and my urge
to give you a sense of this book's spirit I have nowhere else to go.
Few people would call Out fine literature, and my Jeckle/Hyde snob/lowbrow selves fight over
books like this. More important than being a good fight: it's a fun fight.
according to los angeles forzata estraniazione.
Angela: This booklet is filled with amazingly flawed events and that i suggestion it was once
amazing.HOWEVER...I could have idea it was once outstanding simply because i've got lived in
Japan for almost 3 years and that i felt like i may establish with the characters. I picked up on
cultural subtleties that made me snort and made me cringe. I rolled my eyes at jap girls being
jap ladies within the booklet and that i cheered once they broke loose from that mold - although
breaking loose intended that they have been ostracized from society and considered as weird. If
you choose to learn this book, take every little thing in it with a grain of salt and check out to
visualize it from a jap element of view. it's going to thoroughly regulate the experience.
Yulia: A literary page-turner as well timed as while it first got here out, this biting critique of
Japan's social and monetary underclass starts off whilst 3 woman co-workers are compelled to
confront the act of a chum opposed to her abusive husband, yet evolves right into a blistering
exposé on these whose tales are by no means told: the unseen night-shift manufacturing facility
staff who make Japan's never-ending offer of field lunches; ladies who're swamped in creditcard debt yet can't stay off their looks, youth, or father's paychecks as "parasite singles"; getting
older mom and dad who, rather than being taken care of through their children, are left to help
their grandchildren and nonetheless take care of their in-laws lengthy after their spouses are
gone; and alienated Brazilian immigrants who by no means reach the rights and recognize of
citizens. Kirino offers nuanced characters pressured to make tricky offerings yet she does so
with substantial empathy and humanity, making us see there are not any transparent labels to
place on her characters, like good, evil, victim, or criminal. This paintings is a gem. It amazes me
I had it in my bookcase for a whole yr sooner than knowing what it provided (though Frank had
obvious its strength immediately). It by no means even pestered me for attention. It simply
waited its flip politely. What a well-behaved thriller. you would nearly imagine it was once
innocent.
