Description
In America, it is soccer. But in Great Britain, it is the real football. No pads, no prayers, no
prisoners. And that's before the players even take the field.
Insightful reviews
Megan: I just finished reading this book for the second time. The first time I read it, I probably
would have given it five stars; something about the glimpse into Hornby's world enthralled me,
but then I wasn't quite as familiar with the lifestyle of being a Premiership fan as I am now.
Set up as a series of essays, Fever Pitch depicts the life of a man who is much, much more
than a casual Arsenal fan, while much less than a "hooligan." It caters to everyone who finds
themselves in between those two descriptions. As I was reading, I found myself at times
nodding in affirmation as he described his emotional state during key moments in his lifetime. At
other times, though, his experiences and observations were foreign to me; since I am an
American, for example, it is difficult for me to understand a lot the nuances between fan bases
for different clubs which seemed second nature to him. As a result, I felt Hornby came off
unintentionally judgmental during certain portions of the book, though I got the feeling that
someone who has been an fan of footy in Europe for longer than I have could confirm some of
the perceptions (and, to an extent, stereotypes) that he portrayed.
The book is very introspective. Hornby is the main, and really the only character, though it is his
relationship with his dad which drives the story in the beginning and his relationship with his
girlfriend which drives it toward the end. In a sense, Hornby is discovering the depths of his own
passion as you go along. There is a great self-awareness at play here, and at some points I felt
like Hornby was describing me instead of himself.
Michael Hattem: Many in England consider this book responsible for the modern mainstream
acceptance of the game in England which saw the crowds change from working-class to middle
and upper class. I am a long-time American Arsenal supporter and read the book a couple of
years after falling hopelessly in love with the club. Needless to say, the book spoke to me in a
very real way. I know many American Arsenal supporters who came to the club through this
book. But, anyway, on to the book itself...
I'm not much for reading novels and Hornby is one of the more popular novelists of his
generation. But, Fever Pitch is not like his other well-known books. Important moments in
Hornby's life are correlated with Arsenal's corresponding fixtures (match). Hornby wants to show
how the obsessive's life becomes intertwined and inseparable from that of his club. Hornby's
personal stories are poignantly told with wit and a bit of "first-book irreverence."
Hardcore fans of any sport will be able to relate to this book and enjoy it. More recent fans of
English football may have a hard time recognizing the football Hornby describes, both play on
the pitch and the culture off of it. The 1970s was a completely different time-before sponsor
names on shirts, before Hillsborough assigned the terraces and their accompanying culture to
the dustbin of history, before the PL was invaded by foreign players, before significant television
coverage in England, let alone the rest of the world. Nevertheless, the emotions are likely to be
similar for many, if not as severe, and should prove enjoyable to the lot of you.
Sudhamshu Hebbar: If you are Football fan, you must read this book. If you are a Sports fan,
obsessed with players, statistics and trivia, you must read this book. If you have difficulty
explaining to others who can't understand your obsession, then you must make them read this
book.
Being an Arsenal fan myself, I had wanted to read Fever Pitch for quite long. Although the book
made me realise that I'm not as obsessed about the game or the club as much as Nick Hornby,
I was nodding away vigorously when he narrated the emotions a fan feels before a match,
during a match and after the match. The humorous touch which he gives to the narration makes
it an excellent read. It showed me how I tend to overanalyse and allow my moods to be swayed
by Arsenal's fortunes in a season. One takeaway from the book was the history of Arsenal at
disappointing it fans in a similar fashion throughout five or more decades. Consistent
consistency, as Arsene Wenger would say. Another important insight was on how Nick Horny
and other obsessed fans had one common factor - they hated what they were doing and that is
why they kept doing it over and over again. They hated the team, the players, the managers,
the away fans, their own fans, their own lives; and standing on the terraces to watch the football
match and vent all their anger on the team they supported was what they loved. Quite ironical,
but I could absolutely make a connect with it.
Apart from Arsenal and football, Nick Hornby has done well to extend the dialogue and provide
opinions on plenty of topics associated with society - hooliganism, relationships, money and
how it splits society, safety and the role of administration in it.
It feels good to be a fan.
Serena!: 2.5*Ho provato a scindere l. a. storia e l'Hornby narratore, sempre gradevole e
alla coda del "No Maria according to me il calcio è no!", chiedendo anche un piccolo additional
morire!).. Però in keeping with trovare queste piccole perle tocca soffrire con squadre e nomi,
con partite che a me non dicono niente, con un Arsenal odiato e amato in egual misura..Niente,
mi è partito un sonno a volte!!!!
Gaurav Vartak: Obsession could be a difficult thing. it might probably compel us to accomplish
nice heights or push us into the darkest depths of depression. Nick Hornby’s obsession is
soccer (NOT Soccer); Arsenal soccer membership to be precise. And the obsession is so
deeply ingrained that in a part in his life, he believed that the one approach for him to beat a
occupation and lifestyles finishing melancholy is that if Arsenal begins taking part in good again.
Such is the idea opposed to which the publication is set.In Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby takes us via
his first come upon with Arsenal in 1968, to Arsenal’s amazing season-ending-title-deciding fit
opposed to Liverpool in 1989. one of many issues that he’s made at the start of the ebook is
precise soccer fan won’t be mindful his/her lifestyles in time period of years (1968, 1969, etc.)
yet particularly when it comes to soccer seasons (68/69, 69/70, etc.) nor may he take note a
number of the memorable occasions (both in own lifestyles or international history) during the
dates that they occurred, yet a few immense fit that came about round that event. And hence it
truly is that, in a publication the place he describes his lifestyles with appreciate to Football; and
the way it affected the process convinced occasions in his life, each one bankruptcy within the
booklet starts off with a fit info as sub-heading (for example: Liverpool vs Arsenal, 26.5.89) after
which is going directly to describe the opposite information surrounding the match. Normally, it's
not that i am a massive fan of autobiographies, and even though this can come round as one, it
isn't precisely so. It’s a crisply written booklet describing a fan’s view of soccer and Arsenal.
And even though the booklet is ready soccer and Arsenal (about eighty five percent of it), it's
nonetheless a booklet that may be learn by means of such a lot activities fanatics and carefully
enjoyed.
Clay: Nick Hornby... what are you able to say approximately this guy? he is quite an excellent
narrator. occasionally he is speaking nonsense and also you do not agree at all, yet you'll
nonetheless get pleasure from interpreting it. the way in which he sees issues is simply so
funny! i will be sincere and allow you to comprehend good distance Down and excessive
constancy have been a lot better. Fever Pitch is a good ebook nevertheless.
