At one point the narrator observes: "He who looks at Beauty is proof against the breath of Evil; he is in harmony with himself and the whole world."(52). This is in line with Kant's notion of beauty, which Goethe would have been aware of at the time.

Goethe vede Stato e Grande Citt come luoghi truffaldini, amorali e indegni sostanzialmente a gente bennata. Nonostante la superiorit "aerea" di Charlotte, Eduard (innamorato di s) s'inclina pericolosamente verso Ottilie (innamorata della gentilezza) scambiando i gesti gentili che lei riserva lui a profusione come amore. Lei innamorata dell'amore, vedendolo in lui, lo sente sorgere dentro di s. Un colossale equivoco.
