Eco exposes all of our progress as obvious steps backward. He is best when he is talking about
Italian politics, but it also least familiar to this reader. Eco has a unique perspective on what
we've all become in the 21st century.
I.P.B.: Meh. Like Witherington, I read this book to get a taste for Eco's style and worldview. Like
Witherington, the style is superb, worldview, not so much. Eco is Catholic, but liberally so. He
should stick with semiotics and medieval art rather than politics and philosophy. Or at least, if he
really wants to talk about politics, he should study, like his superb research into the Middle
Ages, what he is writing about instead of repeating the latest progressive invectives and talking
points.
That being said, there are two interesting essays in here. The one on Mel Gibson's "Passion of
the Christ" offers the best criticism of the movie: the violence in the movie extrapolates too
much from the Bible and no amount of violence can represent the separation of the Son from
the Father, a spiritual sacrifice rather than physical. I think there is more to the movie than what
Eco suggest, but he is right that its representation of Jesus as God should have been better.
The other interesting essay is the one on politically correctness. While the conclusions Eco
reaches are wrong, the reasoning and history of politically correct language is worth looking
into.
Now this is not to say Umberto Eco is not worthy author for Christians to read; rather, the point
of this review is that this book is not the place to start. If you want Eco, stick to his "In the Name
of the Rose" or works on medieval art and aesthetics. If you want a witty, Catholic book on
various subject, stick to Chesterton.
