Description
New York is a sweeping, four-century tale set in the most exciting city on earth. Magnificently
researched with the help of leading New York historians, this novel follows the fortunes of the
Van Dyck and Master families, and the descendants of Quash the African slave, from the early
days of Manhattan's Indian settlements and Dutch New Amsterdam, through the English
takeover, the War of Independence, when New York was the British headquarters, and the
nineteenth century, when New Yorkers created the canals and railroads that opened up the
American West.
Along the way we meet the Kellers, German shopkeepers who produce a famous photographer,
and the O'Donnell family, who emerge from the gangs of New York, rise through Tammany Hall
and marry into the English aristocracy. We discover how the city almost left the Union at the
start of the Civil War, and experienced the terrible Draft Riots 1863 and the Great Blizzard of
1888. At the start of the twentieth century, the Carusos immigrate through Ellis Island, witness
the great Crash of 1929, and help construct the Empire State Building. The Adlers of Brooklyn
experience anti-semitism between the two World Wars, and the Masters, as bankers and
lawyers, seek their fortunes through the greed of the eighties and nineties, and come through a
life-changing crisis in the tragedy of 9/11.
Larger-than-life historical characters fill the background: Stuyvesant, the Dutchman, Lord
Cornbury the transvestite English Governor, George Washington, Ben Franklin who tried to
keep America British, Lincoln who made one of his greatest speeches in the city, the titanic JP
Morgan, Tammany Hall's Fernando Wood and Boss Tweed, legendary socialites like Mrs. Astor,
and memorable modern city figures like La Guardia, Robert Moses, and Mayor Koch.
Insightful reviews
Marc A.: Another thoroughly enchanting and engaging historical fiction by Edward Rutherford. A
master of the "James Michener School" of long, exhaustively researched, examinations of
important historical places, achieved by creating compelling narratives at crucial points along
the historical timeline that bring to life for the reader the place and the events that make it
matter.
Some years ago, I read Rutherford's "London" in the hope that it would enhance my enjoyment
of a then planned visit to the great city, and I was rewarded beyond my wildest expectation. As
a native New Yorker, I can say without hesitation, that anyone seeking to visit "The Big Apple"
would do well to read this book first. Do not be put off by the length (860 pgs., incl. an epilogue,
that surveys the history from New Amsterdam of 1664 - 2009,)because Rutherford is sucha
magnificent storyteller, that you will be glad for the feeling that there is always a little more.
Finally I would point out that, though the book is clearly researched in depth, the author is not
one of those who falls in love with their research to the detriment of the narrative flow.
Moreover, Rutherford has an amazing ear for telling details that can only be gleaned from the
most attentive reading and interviewing e.g. how could he know the importance of describing
the layout of a Park Avenue Classic 6 apartment or even know about the "Wall St. gogo years"
phenomenon (continuing to this day)of Bar/Bat Mitzvah extravaganza celebrations that often
include Grucci-level fireworks displays and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars? If you
like a really yummy historical read, you won't be disappointed here.
Steven Z.: Over the years I have grown more impressed with the historical novels of Edward
Rutherfurd. Beginning with SARUM years ago to the present novel, NEW YORK: A NOVEL I
read the last page of each book with a feeling of satisfaction that I have just completed a
remarkable blend of historical license and impeccable research. In his latest effort Rutherford
presents another "Michneresque" type journey, this time through the history of New York City
from the 17th through the 20th century. What drew me to the book was recently viewing the
Martin Scorcese film "Gangs of New York." The description of the draft riots in New York in
1863 during the Civil War were very poignant, but historically accurate. Through the
descendants of the van Dyck and Master families the reader becomes engrossed in the
important historical events that are explored in the narrative. Whether the main characters are
confronted by the political machinations of Tammany Hall, the disastrous Triangle Shirt Waist
Fire or economic catastrophe the reader becomes fully absorbed. Mr. Rutherfurd has become
one of my favorite practitioners of historical fiction and I am thrilled that his latest effort, PARIS
will be released next month.
Olandesi, Inglesi, Indiani, Schiavi, Liberti, Cristiani, Protestanti, Ebrei e poi, a seguire, Italiani,
Tiffany: the article with 'New York' is that it attempts to trap big apple urban via many, many
narratives in a single booklet which i locate is the principal factor to the book. this is often the
type of tale that should be in a mini sequence due to the historical past and the quantity of
people that helped construct ny to what it's today. i actually dislike the fact, that the instant you
get into one tale - it abruptly jumps to a brand new story. the writer doesn't provide you with
adequate time to get into every one personality and find out how long island developed. that's
fairly aggravating. i'm mid manner in the course of the ebook - however the ever altering tale
line leaves the reader in need of extra depth. the one factor that retains you interested, i might
say are the ancient advancements alongside the way. But, if i wished simply that i'll learn a
background textual content ebook any day. For me an exceptional ebook is person who not just
offers you heritage but in addition helps you to see into the lives of the characters of a prior
period of time and get contain of their story. Unfortunately, this ebook is kind of missing in that
department. I provide it 2.5 stars for its attention-grabbing total theme. Had there been a
narrative line - maybe my ranking can have reached three or 4.
KatieMc: A show off of recent York heritage from 1664 to the current day, informed during the
tales of a number of big apple dependent (mostly outdated funds Anglo and Dutch) families. I
first and foremost came across it very difficult as the narrative could change to a brand new
character/generation simply as anything fascinating appeared to happen. there is no such thing
as a plot within the conventional sense, and as soon as I approved the tempo, i began to take
pleasure in it more. do not feel undesirable if you happen to thoroughly overlook personality
names simply because they arrive and go.Linking the folk and tales jointly was once a wampum
belt, before everything given to Dirk van Dyck by way of his local American daughter light
Feather. The belt will get handed down although the generations and infrequently crosses
relations traces and turns into the symbolic thread weaving every person together. It used to be
an attractive device, yet i discovered it a little ironic that the which means of the belt fast
acquired lost, the entire whereas one of many later characters laments that 'kids nowadays do
not fairly understand the background of latest York". This used to be a publication membership
read, advised through a member who lately visited ny who discovered that she did not be aware
of a lot concerning the urban and used to be drawn to learning. this can be the best e-book for
that. It was once great long, yet effortless to learn and does a superb activity of hitting on a
number of the very important eras and occasions within the background of recent York. It
unfortunately ends on September 11, 2001, which coincidentally an analogous day i ended the
book, 14 years on.
Jim: it is a strong book. yet do not count on range within the story. Rutherford tailors his
narrative lovely heavily to the stories of the Masters-to the detriment of the opposite families.
Rutherford has selected to prevent features of recent York (Five Points/the Harlem
Renaissance/the boy or girl movie industry/Broadway)that might have been mined for attentiongrabbing reading. it is the narrowness of the focal point that truly is the main problematical point
of the book. it is a sturdy book, yet it is not diverse.
