Karen: The Betrothed is rightfully rated as a treasure in World Literature. Both a wonderful story
and a historical documentary set in the vicinity of Milan between 1628-1631, the story line is that
of star crossed lovers; but oh the obstacles they faced! I picked it up because I recently
discovered that my ancestors survived the 1630 Plague of Milan. But the story of the Great
Plague (footnoted with Manzoni's research of contemporary accounts) is only one section of this
incredibly rich novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will read it again.

Non darò stelle a Manzoni: "lo odio" è eccessivo, ma, di certo, "non lo sopporto come autore" è
abbastanza verosimile. Eppure come negare le sue immense capacità? E molto di più, data la
sua maestria, mi risulta insopportabile. Al di là della storia (che io reputo noiosa, ma è solo la
mia opinione) lui scrive con una lingua invidiabile, una capacità descrittiva rara, una
contemporaneità inaspettata. I suoi personaggi sono credibili, le sue descrizioni pittoriche e
sorprendenti, la sua capacità di osservazione interessante. Non a caso "un classico", "meno
scomodo" di altri, conforme a certi "gusti dominanti", ma assolutamente degno di essere letto.
Clive Illman: Not really finished, I'm afraid. Wonderful things to say about this book, but I do
understand why generations of Italian shudder when they hear its name, having had it bashed
over their heads as school children - a bit like me and 'The Mayor of Casterbridge', 'Mansfield
Park' and 'Joseph Andrews', all of which I've enjoyed since those far-off days, but certainly not
at the time...
It rather depends on what you're expecting: if you're prepared for A LOT of historical fact, then
you'll be pleased and engrossed - and perhaps even if you're not expecting it, assuming you're
of a certain turn of mind; if it's a rollicking yarn in a picturesque setting you're looking forward to,
you'll be pleased for a while, but after a couple of hundred pages you might start to wonder
about the need for quite so much material that isn't all that rollicking - interesting though it is, in
its non-fictionny way. It's all terribly well done, of course, but I felt after a while that Manzoni
himself doesn't really care too much about his characters, and I'm afraid the apparent
inattention to their fate rubbed off on me. I mean, yes, a reference or two to the Venetian Bread
Wars is useful and interesting, but when hoping to keep the reader's attention on the fortunes of
a pair of lovelorn swains, a long, meticulous essay on the subject of carbohydrates isn't going to
serve your purpose. And why sooo much information about Gertrude (among others), the nun
with attitude?
That said, I love many things about this book; the narrative techniques - often surprisingly
modernistic - are absorbing and supremely well handled, the frequent biblical comparisons
based on elements from the natural world lend poetic lyricism and profundity, and frequently
Signor Manzoni had me laughing - or at least grinning pretty earnestly. Anyway, I'm not qualified
to deliver a proper opinion, because I didn't quite finish this remarkable book; perhaps the last
100 pages returned to the fate of those swains and they 'got it on' and there was a punch-up
with Rodrigo (who I imagine didn't unaccountably see the light and go all soppy like that sap the
Unnamed - for no other reason, I suspect, than to provide a deus-ex-wossname for Lucia), and
they all lived happily etc etc. Sorry Alessandro - it'll be no great loss to your posterity, but you
lost me among all that flour and dough.
