Carlo: Si impara sui libri di scuola che la vita di Leopardi fu infelice. Ma gli studi adolescenziali
non sempre riescono a colpire nel profondo e poi, come sempre, è confrontandosi con l’opera
di un autore che si riesce a entrare davvero nel suo mondo. Leggendo la produzione poetica
dell’uomo di Recanati, racchiusa quasi in toto in questi poco più di trenta canti, si capisce
davvero che la vita del conte Giacomo fu difficile, prima confinata nel ‘natio borgo selvaggio’ in
cui la sensibilità del poeta non poteva trovare risposte e poi dispersa in un continuo girovagare
da un posto all’altro (Pisa, Firenze e, infine, l’odiata Napoli) con pochi momenti di requie a
inframmezzare un cosciente avvicinamento a una morte sempre più anelata. Se negli anni
giovanili le tensioni interne del suo animo sono incanalate nella passione politica – il richiamo
rivolto alla ‘serva Italia di dolore ostello’ (ah no, questo è un altro) e agli Italiani perché
prendano esempio dal glorioso passato per una rinascita morale e civile – col passare del
tempo c’è spazio sempre più per un pessimismo cosmico e spietato che vede la vita come un
inutile susseguirsi di sofferenze somministrate all’essere umano (e anche agli altri viventi) da
una natura ferocemente matrigna. Poco durarono anche il nuovo impeto creativo nato con ‘Il
risorgimento’ (venuto dopo alcuni anni di silenzio poetico) e l’innamoramento – ovviamente
non corrisposto – del periodo de ‘Il pensiero dominante’, che poterono solo parzialmente aprire
uno spiraglio fra le nubi: la disillusione che ne seguì fu il colpo definitivo e condusse a
quell’ultima fase in cui solo un acre sarcasmo si alterna alle più nere considerazioni in un’idea
del mondo che ben si riassume negli oltre trecento versi della conclusiva ‘La ginestra’. Eppure
quest’uomo non solo fu capace di mettere in squisita poesia le sue angosce più profonde, ma
seppe anche creare momenti di abbandono in cui la tensione emotiva e, diciamo così,
‘ideologica’ lascia spazio alle sensazioni: è inutile stare qui a ricordare le meraviglie di, ad
esempio, ‘A Silvia’, ‘Il sabato del villaggio’ o – dalla cintola in su – ‘L’infinito’, ma va
sottolineata almeno l’impagabile bellezza dei notturni, specie se illuminati da un’argentea luce
lunare. Va anche detto che non tutto è dello stesso livello e, se si possono facilmente perdonare
gli eccessi di stilemi classici e petrarcheschi delle canzoni giovanili (le eco del poeta di Arezzo
sono comunque presenti in tutta l’opera leopardiana), più fatica si fa ad appassionarsi per
lavori minori come ‘Consalvo’ o alle lungaggini degli endecasillabi ‘Al conte Carlo Piepoli’.,
ma i momenti luminosi (sovente abbaglianti) sono talmente numerosi da compensare anche i
piccoli passi falsi. Il numero di trentasei canti e quattro frammenti potrebbe sembrare esiguo,
ma a parte la breve vita – tra il primo e l’ultimo componimento passano meno di vent’anni – e
le pause di silenzio, va ricordato che Leopardi fu anche un logorroico scrittore in prosa, come
ben testimoniano le migliaia di pagine dello ‘Zibaldone’: in poesia, invece, dopo gli inizi in cui
utilizza canzoni strutturate in strofe (che sovente hanno bisogno delle note per essere
comprese) egli passa essenzialmente al verso libero e all’endecasillabo sciolto che meglio si
confanno ad esprimere i sentimenti del suo animo tormentato.
