In 1517 Martin Luther nails his ninety-five theses demanding reform of the Catholic Church to
the door of the cathedral church in Wittenburg, setting off the period of upheaval, war, and
violence we now know as the Reformation. During the reigns of the Habsburg Charles V and his
enemy the French king Francis I, the papacy desperately struggles to secure its position and
undermine its political opponents.
Meanwhile, as declared foes of the Roman Church, the radical Protestant Anabaptists are in
rebellion against an entire order of European society and are persecuted and brutalised by
those outside their sphere.
In this age devastated by wars of religion, a young theology student adopts the cause of the
heretics and the disinherited. Across the chessboard of Europe, from the German plains to the
flourishing Dutch cities and south to Venice, our hero, an anabaptist who travels under many
names, and his enemy, Q, a papal informer and heretic hunter, play a game in which no moves
are forbidden. What begins as a struggle to reveal each other’s identity eventually becomes
part of a much greater mission: to destroy and achieve domination over each other.

Dopo lotte secolari che durarono non trent’anni (come scherzava un grande drammaturgo
rumeno) ma all’incirca tre mesi, cioè dopo averlo preso, lasciato e ripreso parecchie volte,
finalmente, l’ho finito! Come impressione generale, questo romanzo è… quasi. Quasi storico
(come fedele ricostruzione di un’epoca, voglio dire), quasi epopeico (come grandezza delle
immagini, dei personaggi e del soffio narrativo), quasi postmoderno (come struttura, linguaggio,
tematica), in poche parole – quasi grande. E sarebbe talmente potuto esserlo, perché tutto era
lì! Ora mi spiego.
Come romanzo storico non è sempre convincente: nonostante la descrizione dei luoghi, abiti,
abitudini, credenze, il linguaggio resta troppo moderno e l’allegoria (benché voluta) troppo
evidente, non soltanto derubando il lettore del piacere di una lettura ingenua, da intrepretare
come vuole, ma anche con un tono troppo militante,che rischia di inviare il romanzo nella
categoria tanto bestemmiata dell'arte tendenziosa.
D'altra parte, benché, per quanto mi riguarda, non abbia niente contro la discontinuità temporale
quando rifletta il disordine del pensiero, the stream of consciousness, la memoria involontaria e
così via, qui, il viavai tra anni e periodi storici mi ha dato l’impressione di una disordine, per cosi
dire, troppo organizzata, come l’accozzaglia di fogli sul tavolo di uno storico che aspetta
pazientemente di mettere i suoi documenti in ordine cronologica.
Questo potrebbe spiegare perché, nonostante la sua lunghezza, Q non riesce a diventare
epopeico, cioè invece di grandioso sembra piuttosto smisurato, perfino qua e là noioso da
morire (devo ammettere vergognosamente che ho saltato qualche pagina o almeno l’ho letta
obliquamente?).
Eppure ci sono anche pagine molto alerte, molto vive e scorrevoli, che riscattano il romanzo. La
figura di Q, per esempio, elusiva e inquietante, eminenza grigia della trama, è realizzata con
grande abilità e finezza, almeno fino al punto in cui gli scrittori hanno ritenuto necessario
inserire il suo diario, inutile nell’economia del testo e per nulla convincente – dato che quasi
tutto quello che è scritto dentro si poteva dedurre. Invece di rendere la sua personalità più
complessa, le toglie il mistero, trasformando il maestro burattinaio in uomo banale. Altrimenti, Q
è davvero affascinante, un sottile Mr Hyde del protagonista:
…siamo le due facce della stessa moneta, (…) abbiamo combattuto alla stessa guerra e nessuno
dei due non esce vincitore.
L’incontro finale tra i due mi è sembrato abilmente diritto, un interessante miscuglio tra
romanzo di cappa e spada (mi ha fatto pensare all'armistizio finale tra d’Artganan e Rochefort)
e romanzo psicologico (gli sforzi introspettivi dell'eroe per capire il suo proprio atteggiamento
verso il suo nemico di una vita) in una vera sintesi postmoderna:
Lascio correre lo sguardo sulle tombe. Su ognuna poteri leggere il nome di un compagno,
ripercorrere le tappe che mi hanno portato qui. Ma non riesco a provare odio. Non ho più la
forza per disprezzare. Guardo Gresbeck e vedo soltanto un vecchio.
Questa scena dell’incontro è uno dei motivi per cui ho cambiato idea e ho deciso di assegnarli
tre stelline invece di due. Un altro motivo è stato la lettura facilissima (e per questo voglio dire
che il mio italiano non ha avuto molte sfide da superare ?), perché ho vissuto momenti in cui
dubitavo sinceramente che abbia finito di leggerlo se non fosse stato scritto in italiano. Infine, ho
trovato alcune frasi astute:
“L’ironia della sorte è che aspettavamo gli sbirri e invece sono arrivati i preti.”
“Lutero ha strappato ai preti il vestito nero, soltanto per ricucirlo nel cuore di tutti gli uomini.”
“Non. Proprio non pensavo di poter fare soldi con il contrabbando dei libri.”
“Gente che si nutra assai male (…) ma sa scegliere con cura le letture.”
In tutto, romanzo molto ambizioso, spesso arrogante (a volte perfino pomposo, stilisticamente
parlando: “Sono stato tra questi. Dalla parte di chi ha sfidato l’ordine del mondo.”), che ha
forse raggiunto l’orizzonte di attese di alcuni lettori ma non so se ha veramente raggiunto
quello dei suoi propri autori, cioè, di fare un po' di differenza nel mondo:
Essere puri non significa separarsi dal mondo, condannarlo, per obbedire ciecamente alla legge
di Dio: se vuoi cambiare il mondo degli uomini devi viverlo.

certainly doesn't lack for action as the title character, a shady Vatican secret agent, plays cat
and mouse with Gert of the Well, his opposite number on the Protestant side. Along with your

book-binding, Venetian whoring, and vivid ultra-vi in various medieval European locales. If they
ever make a movie of this one I will be first in line to buy a bucket of popcorn.

soffocato dai rigurgiti autoritari ma pronto a risorgere e attecchire in un nuovo mondo e in una
nuova epoca.
Questa è la storia di un Europa in fiamme, percorsa in lungo e in largo da un fuoco riformatore
che sembra inarrestabile, acceso dalle tesi di Lutero contro le indulgenze papali e prontamente
ravvivato da nuovi riformatori non appena la prima fiammata sembra spegnersi sotto la coperta
soffocante delle autorità politiche e ecclesiastiche che con abilità riescono a incanalare nelle
proprie rigide gerarchie ogni anelito riformatore.

trascinandosi dietro un esercito di idealisti e contadini destinato al massacro ma non all'oblio
perché il loro messaggio di rivolta verrà raccolto e diffuso dai reduci e usato per dare il via a
nuove predicazioni, nuove rivolte fino all'eresia anabattista e alla follia suicida di Munster.
Il nostro eroe senza nome partecipa ad ognuna di queste avventure vivendo ogni volta la
cocente delusione di vedere i propri sogni andare in fumo, annientati da un nemico che sembra
essere sempre un passo avanti, mentre pian piano si fa strada in lui il sospetto del tradimento, il
dubbio di un nemico invisibile che da sempre lo accompagna nelle sue avventure distruggendo
le sue aspirazioni e i suoi affetti.
E' lui, Q, emissario del potentissimo cardinale Carafa, la mano nell'ombra, il motore di ogni
evento, il fedelissimo servitore dell'ordine costituito, un servitore così devoto alla causa da non
rendersi conto di non esistere più se non in funzione di essa, tanto che anche di lui non
conosceremo che il soprannome con cui si firma. La storia di questa spia inafferrabile si incrocia
più volte con quella del nostro protagonista dando il via ad una incessante caccia all'uomo che
movimenterà tutta la seconda parte del romanzo trasformandolo in un'appassionante spy-story.
Così come questo libro è denso di personaggi ed eventi, esso è altrettanto ricco di possibili
interpretazioni, alcune più o meno implicitamente confermate dagli stessi autori, altre lasciate
più alla diversa sensibilità di ogni lettore.
E' indubbia la critica di ogni forma di autoritarismo, l'esaltazione di un ideale di lotta per far sì
che i propri diritti vengano rispettati, una condanna dell'atteggiamento repressivo tenuto dalla
Chiesa Cattolica nel corso dei secoli ma ancora si dibatte se il messaggio finale sia un
messaggio di rassegnazione e disillusione o se al contrario i capitoli finali non esaltino un
atteggiamento di speranza e perseveranza.
Personalmente propendo per la seconda interpretazione ma, al di là di tutto questo, credo sia
opportuno per prima cosa affrontare Q come un gustoso, appassionante romanzo storico il cui
unico difetto, almeno a mio parere, è l'eccessiva lentezza dei primi capitoli che sembrano più un
asettico resoconto da libro di storia e faticano a coinvolgere il lettore nelle vicende narrate. In
effetti statisticamente pare che i primi capitoli mietano numerose vittime, soprattutto tra coloro
che hanno crisi epilettiche solamente a nominare la Storia, ma garantisco che vale proprio la
pena di resistere e gustarsi ogni passaggio con calma. Infine, per quanto riguarda la volgarità di
cui si sono lamentati alcuni lettori, forse ero troppo assorbita dalla storia o forse sono proprio
rozza io, ma l' unico commento che posso fare è : "non pervenuta".
