Annelies Verbeke writes about people one cannot help but feel sympathy for, so poignant is

well-chosen metaphors to underpin her story and she is penetrating in rendering her
characters’ loneliness, impotence and feelings of insignificance. Most surprising of all is the
tone of the book: simultaneously laconic, spare and poetic, with a dash of irony, and
nevertheless brimming with genuine sympathy. Sleep! is a convincing novel in which the author
uses the complex personalities of her characters to pen a strikingly insightful vision of life and its
experiences.

Hanne: Voor een debuut-novella is dit indrukwekkend. Zeer goed geschreven en met zeer veel
knipogen naar andere schrijvers, maar vernuftigd ingewerkt. Herman De Coninck schreef dat
"zo lang er sneeuw is, is er hoop", Annelies Verbeke verandert dat naar een iets minder
poëtische versie: zolang er stront is, is er hoop.
Met veel verbeelding en humor maakt ze van een diep en donker thema toch relatief lichte
lectuur. Hier zijn twee individuen met een psychologisch zwaarder verleden, die door hun
slapeloosheid zich helemaal in de goot aan werken zijn.
Maya's karakter kan ik me goed inbeelden, maar om eerlijk te zijn had ik een pak meer moeite
met Benoit. Het idee dat hij eigenlijk maar een pervert was, kon ik bijzonder moeilijk van me
afschudden en dat heeft wel een impact gehad op mijn algemene beeld van dit boek.

nemohou být dobré a milující matky, nicmén? imho Verbeke pouze - mechanicky - nahrazuje
jedno dogma druhým a nijak výrazn? jej neobohacuje, nevysv?tluje, nesnaží se pochopit. Její
prohlášení p?sobí mnohdy jako intelektuální multi-kulti póza, která povrchn? respektuje
odlišnost, ale rozhodn? se s ní nechce nijak zaplétat a odstup p?es veškeré své tolerantní

gevonden, de personages kloppen en het concept mag er ook zijn. Maar toch. Het gaat
allemaal wel erg snel: er gebeuren vreselijk heftige dingen, maar we krijgen geen tijd om er bij
stil te staan. En de personages gaan ook maar door. Denken er wel aan, maar het lijkt ze niet
per se te veranderen.

Paulien: Ik wou al een tijdje het werk van Annelies Verbeke lezen en haar debuut leek me een
goed boek om mee te starten. Ik heb er wel van genoten - de personages zijn wat bizar, maar je
raakt wel gehecht aan hen. Benoit was once heel aandoenlijk. Ik vond het ook positief dat dit
boek niet hopeloos uitgerokken wordt. Er zit niet echt een plot in, het drijft echt wel op de
personages, maar ik kon me er genoeg in verliezen om er geen final van te hebben. Ik ben
benieuwd naar wat Verbeke nog meer in petto heeft. De stijl van het boek vind ik wel heel
typische "Vlaams boek vanaf circa 2000".
