Rachael Eyre: I love Ira Levin. He was the king of enjoyable schlock. I first came to him through
Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives; I had seen neither of the films but thought I knew
the stories through pop cultural osmosis. I was impressed by how suspenseful and readable
both books were - even more so by A Kiss Before Dying. It's astonishing that was his debut,
written in his early twenties.
Although Sliver isn't quite up there with the others, it has plenty to offer. It's never really a
mystery who the landlord cum voyeur is, but that's the point - rather than make him your
stereotypical seedy old man, Pete is handsome, young and outwardly charming. You'd think he
was ideal boyfriend and son in law material - oh, apart from the fact he obsessively spies on his
neighbours and kills anyone who might endanger his secret.
I like the fact that every time I thought I knew where the story was going, it did something
completely different. Kay is a refreshingly honest, realistic heroine - she may date younger men
and masturbate in the tub, but we aren't invited to judge her. (Though it may seem gratuitous to
some readers, it's necessary - Pete feels he has the right to intrude on even the most personal
moments). A lesser author would simply have had her find out and be killed, but instead Levin
shows the strange fascination this would hold (why else do people watch reality TV?)
Oh, and in Felice you have the most badass cat in fiction. Talk about a karmic punishment!
Manda: Though very dated now, this book still chills, whilst also raising some uncomfortable
questions. Who hasn't watched someone who is unaware of your interest in them? A couple in a

Allison Novasel: I have to be honest, had I not seen the movie, I'm not sure I would have
followed this entire book. That could be in part due to poor editing on the Kindle. There were no
breaks between sub-chapters, so all of a sudden, the HE or SHE become someone totally
different, with no clue to change your mindset. But the story is good...I can't say I didn't enjoy.
And had I not seen the movie, I think there would have been surprises. It's surely not a mustread, but it's a good, quick, creepy choice if you're an Ira Levin fan
