Gordon ontmoet in London, net na WO II. Gordon is een psychiater en het klikt min of meer met
Louisa, hij probeert haar -tot haar plezier- steeds te doorgronden en haar gedachten te
voorspellen.
Belangrijker echter voor het verhaal: Gordon domineert Louisa al heel snel op seksueel gebied.
Hun eerste keer komt als uit het niets, op een bank in een tuin. Maar de dominantie wordt groter
en groter, tot op het (letterlijk) pijnlijke af. Sommige (verkrachtings-)scenes doen pijn aan de
ogen. Louisa vindt echter een diepe bevrediging in die onderwerping, zowel lichamelijk als
psychisch. Hun relatie loopt toch op de klippen, maar heeft Louisa gesterkt als persoon.
Mijn oordeel: Dit boekje werd heruitgegeven in de reeks 'Verboden Boeken' van De Morgen van
enkele jaren geleden. Dat het ooit op de 'verboden lijst' heeft gestaan, wekt eigenlijk weinig
verwondering. Het gaat er nogal expliciet seksueel, en soms ook erg hevig aan toe. Het boek
verscheen in 1966 onder pseudoniem, en Templeton stemde er pas in 2003 in toe om onder
haar eigen naam te publiceren.
Vlot lezend verhaal, goed geschreven, soms schokkend, soms wat lichter en milder in zijn toon.

Gordon je žvanil, jehož hlubinné psychoanalytické konstrukce jsou tak pr?hledné, že jakýkoli
?lov?k, která dosahuje IQ alespo? 90, do nich musí okamžit? vid?t. Krom toho se k hlavní
ženské postav? chová celou dobu jako zmrd. V jakési internetové recenzi jedné nadšené
?tená?ky jsem m?l tu ?est si p?e?íst, že jde vlastn? o „p?irozené a úžasné zachycení BDSM
vztahu“. No nevím. To co jsem vid?l já bylo znásiln?ní na prvních stranách a vlastn? tak trochu
lucky accident, že jeho ob?? byla pí?a, která si takovou v?c nechá líbit. V p?ístupu vrcholn?
nesympatického zamindrákovaného žvanila Gordona k hlavní hrdince není ani trochu v?elosti,
ani trochu lásky a vnímat toto dílo jako pojednání o osudové lásce (jak se snaží p?esv?d?it
doslov) je totáln? mimo.
Hlavní ženská postava je pak naprosto plochá. V podstat? jediné co o ni víme je to, že
poslouchá na slovo a to i muže, který ji „nep?itahuje“. Snaha o hloubku vlastn? zrcadlí
samotnou psychoanalýzu v tom, že jde o plytké žvatlání. Hloubka je pouze deklamovaná. Ve
skute?nosti jsou tém?? veškeré dialogy dvou hlavních postav mimo?ádn? tupé. Ani ze strany
hlavní ženské postavy nelze mluvit o lásce – pod?ízenost ji sice uklid?uje, ale nesobecký zájem
o sv?j prot?jšek ve skute?nosti neprojeví nikdy.
Takže když kniha není pojednáním o lásce a postavy jsou tupé, nesympatické a jednorozm?rné,
