Met deze eerste Sabaku van het nieuwe jaar wil ik van de gelegenheid
gebruik maken om u namens de directie en alle medewerkers van de
SLM een gezond en reislustig 2016 toe te wensen. Ook in dit nieuwe jaar
zal de SLM weer alles in het werk stellen om u als onze passagier, klant,
maar vooral als onze gewaardeerde gast zo goed mogelijk van dienst
te zijn. Zoals u van ons gewend bent, streeft de SLM naar het hoogste
niveau van kwaliteit, gastvrijheid betrouwbaarheid en veiligheid.
Het is een eer en genoegen u door middel van dit welkomstwoord in
de eerste Sabaku van het nieuwe jaar mezelf aan u voor te stellen als de
nieuwe President & CEO Surinam Airways. U kunt er van verzekerd
zijn dat ik samen met mijn directieteam en alle SLM-medewerkers
er alles aan zal doen om onze slogan ‘Proud to serve you” waar te
maken door onze service en dienstverlening op een nog hoger niveau
te brengen. Daarbij is uw inbreng als passagier en gast van de SLM heel
welkom. Hebt u suggesties voor verbetering van onze dienstverlening
dan luisteren we graag naar u.
Een bijzonder moment voor de SLM en haar passagiers was de eerste
commerciële vlucht vanuit Amsterdam naar Paramaribo met de
PZ- TCR, de Airbus A340-313 op zaterdag 26 december 2015. De
nieuwste aanwinst van onze SLM vloot landde die dag om 20.52 uur
op de Johan Adolf Pengel Internationale luchthaven te Zanderij na een
comfortabele vlucht vanaf Schiphol Amsterdam. De Airbus A340-300
is een betrouwbaar en modern viermotorig verkeersvliegtuig voor
de lange afstanden en maakt deel uit van de gerenommeerde Airbus
A340-familie.
Suriname en de SLM waren onlangs weer prominent aanwezig
op de Vakantiebeurs 2016 te Utrecht – met 1200 exposanten en
tienduizenden bezoekers de grootste vakantiebeurs van Europa - om
mensen enthousiast te maken voor een bezoek aan het schitterende
Suriname. De belangstelling voor een avontuurlijke, duurzame en
vooral relaxte vakantie in Suriname groeit elk jaar: vanuit alle landen in
de wereld. De SLM is trots dat het haar steentje kan bijdragen aan de
promotie van Suriname als ultieme vakantiebestemming.
Maar Suriname is niet alleen gewild als vakantiebestemming. Steeds
meer mensen uit alle uithoeken van de wereld kiezen Suriname om er
een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen, samen met hun partner of gezin. In dit
nummer een artikel over mensen die Suriname als hun nieuw vaderland
hebben gekozen. Suriname als voorbeeld voor de wereld dankzij de
unieke multi culturele samenleving waarin integratie als
een vanzelfsprekendheid wordt beschouwd.
In dit eerste nummer van Sabaku van 2016 vindt u weer
veel artikelen met nuttige informatie over onder meer
‘places to go’ in Suriname en bestemmingen die de SLM
in de regio aandoet. Deze keer met aandacht voor het
bijzondere eiland Trinidad & Tobago.

With this first edition of Sabaku in the new year, on behalf of myself,
in combination with the board and all employees of SLM, would like
to take the opportunity to wish you a pleasant travel year of 2016. In
the new year, SLM will do everything it can to provide the best possible
service for you as our passenger, client, but especially as our valued guest.
SLM strives to reach the highest level in quality, hospitality, reliability and
safety, as you’re used from us.
It is my honor and pleasure to introduce myself, by using the first Sabaku
of the new year, as the new President & CEO of Surinam Airways. I can
assure you that I, alongside my new direction team and all the SLMemployees, will do everything we can to make our slogan “Proud to serve
you”, a realization, by bringing our service to an even higher level. Your
input as a passenger and guest of SLM is very much welcomed. Should
you have any suggestions to improve our services, we will be glad to listen
to what you have to say.
It was a special moment for SLM and its passengers, when the first
commercial flight out of Amsterdam to Paramoribo with the PZ- TCR took
place. The Airbus A340-313 took flight on Saturday, December 26 2015.
On that day, the newest addition of the SLM fleet landed on Johan Adolf
Pengel International Airport in Zanderij at 8.52pm, after a comfortable
flight out of Schiphol Amsterdam. The Airbus A340-300 is a reliable and
modern four-engine transportation plane for long distances and it is part
of the reputable Airbus A340-family.
Suriname and the SLM have recently been attending the ‘Vakantiebeurs
2016’ in Utrecht, the Netherlands – with over 1,200 exhibitors and tens
of thousands of visitors. It is the largest holiday fair in Europe, and it
makes people enthusiastic about a visit to the beautiful Suriname. The
interest for an adventurous, durable, and especially relaxed vacation in
Suriname, grows every year from every corner of the planet. The SLM is
proud it has been able to do its part in the promotion of Surinam as the
ultimate holiday destination.
Suriname is not just a country in high-demand, but it is a great holiday
destination as well. More and more people from every corner of the
world choose Suriname to start a new life; together with their partner,
or as a family. In this edition you will find an article about people who
have chosen Suriname as their new country of origin. Suriname is an
example to the world, thanks to its unique multicultural community in
which integration is considered as self-evident.
In this first edition of Sabaku in the year 2016, you will
find many articles with useful information about ‘places
to go’ within Suriname and destinations, which are being
visited by SLM. This time, we will give special attention to
the extraordinary island of Trinidad.

Introduction
INTRODUCTIE
Sabaku...
Sabaku, zo heet dit inflight magazine van Surinam Airways. Je spreekt het uit als ‘sabbakoe’, met de klemtoon
op de laatste lettergreep. Sabaku is het Surinaamse
woord voor reiger. In Suriname leven achttien soorten
reigers, waarvan er vier ‘sabaku’ worden genoemd. Deze
kleine, sierlijke vogels zijn uitgerust met lange poten en
een lange, krachtige snavel. De verschillende soorten leven vaak met elkaar samen.
Bij zonsopkomst verlaten de sabaku’s collectief de gemeenschappelijke slaapverblijven in de mangrovebossen langs de
rivier. Een kolonie vliegende reigers biedt een indrukwekkende aanblik. Aan het eind van de dag keren de vogels opnieuw in groepen
terug naar hun onderkomens voor de nacht. Het wit van hun veren
steekt dan mooi af tegen het roze of purper van de avondhemel.
Sabaku’s zijn sociale vogels: ze slapen en broeden gemeenschappelijk. In Paramaribo vinden we een broedkolonie en slaapplaats
van sabaku’s langs de Surinamerivier aan de monding van de Van
Sommelsdijckskreek.
“Sabaku” is the name of Surinam Airways’ inflight magazine. It is pronounced “SA-BA-KOO” with the emphasis
on the last syllable. Sabaku is the Surinamese word for
the snowy egret (and some other
species of egrets). Snowy egrets are small, graceful, longlegged birds with a long, pointed, powerful bill.
At sunrise, the birds leave the communal roost and nesting
sites within a short period of time. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At
dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves.
The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with
the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky.
Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus
breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost
of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

moet voortaan een douane passagiersdeclaratieformulier invullen. Het nieuwe
declaratieformulier komt samen met het reeds
van toepassing zijnde immigratieformulier dat
ingevuld en overhandigd moet worden aan de
Militaire Politie.
Het is in de internationale burgerluchtvaart gebruikelijk dat elke passagier zich bij binnenkomst
in een land met zijn of haar bagage bij de douaneambtenaar aanmeldt en een passagiersdeclaratieformulier overlegt.
Met de introductie van het passagiersdeclaratieformulier voldoet de Surinaamse Douane aan een
internationale verplichting, aangezien hierdoor
wordt voorzien in het optimaliseren van de controle op de legale of illegale invoer van: verdovende middelen, bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten, alsook vuurwapens en munitie,
persoonlijke- en handelsgoederen en vreemde valuta.

immigration form that needs to be completed
and handed to the Military Police.
In international civil aviation, it is customary
for every passenger to report to the customs
officer with his or her baggage on arrival, and
to hand over a passenger declaration form.
With the introduction of the passenger declaration form, Surinamese Customs will adhere
to an international obligation, seeing how this
provides optimization of inspection regarding
the legal or illegal import of: narcotics, endangered animals and plants, as well as firearms
and munition, personal effects and commodities, and foreign
currency.

Holi Phagwa is een kleurrijke feestdag in Suriname. Iedereen doet mee, of ze nou hindoe, christen, jood of
moslim zijn. Iedereen wenst elkaar: Subh holi!
Hoewel Holi Phagwa een van oorsprong Hindoestaans religieus
feest is, wordt het in Suriname door alle bevolkingsgroepen
gevierd. Een bewijs van de geslaagde multiculturele samenleving
waarmee Suriname uniek in de wereld is. Het is om die reden
dat Holi Phagwa is uitgeroepen tot nationale feestdag en het
feest uitbundig wordt gevierd.

De mens is immers een deel van de schepping en dus een deel
van de natuur. Ook is de lente de tijd van opleving, bloei en
verlichting, het symbool van nieuw leven en hoop.
Het Holi-feest dat dit jaar wordt gevierd op woensdag 23 maart,
wordt vooral gekenmerkt door zang, dans, veel eten en het
strooien met kleurstof (Abier) en gekleurd poeder en het elkaar
besprenkelen met parfum. Phagwa is een combinatie van een
lentefeest, een feest van de overwinning van het goede op het
kwade en een nieuwjaarsfeest.Volgens de Gregoriaanse kalender
wordt dit in het voorjaar gevierd en in de hindoekalender op de
dag na de volle maan van de maand Phaalguna. Het feest is ook
naar deze maand vernoemd: Phagua/Phagwa.
In Suriname gaan nog steeds culturele zanggroepen (Chautal)
naar de tempels, maar ook huis aan huis om muziek te maken.
DJ’s draaien keihard muziek terwijl er een pool party gehouden
wordt, waar het zwembadwater een mengelmoes is van
verschillende kleuren.
Feestjes worden gehouden in tempels, in huizen, in straten, in
feestzalen en open parken. Sommige feestjes zijn gratis en bij
anderen vraagt men een bijdrage.
Het is niet voor niets dat het feest ook wel Festival of Colors
wordt genoemd, want de straten van Suriname en vooral van
Paramaribo worden gekenmerkt door een bonte verzameling
Holi wordt ook wel gezien als een feest van eenheid. Holi wordt
altijd gevierd met een groep mensen: vrienden, familie, kennissen,
collega’s of vreemden. Op de dag van de Holi Phagwa is iedereen
één. Er wordt geen onderscheid gemaakt tussen status, rijkdom,

armoede, baas en werknemer. Het is het begin van een schone lei,
waarbij iedereen met gelijkgezinde blik wordt gezien. Iedereen
lacht, drinkt, danst, eet, heeft plezier en bestrooit elkaar met
parfum en gekleurd poeder. Met dit poeder wordt uitgedrukt
dat iedereen verschillende kleuren heeft, maar toch gelijk is.
De avond voorafgaand aan Holi is Holika Dahan; de kwaad
symboliserende brandstapel wordt dan verbrand. Op de dag zelf
zijn er activiteiten in huiselijke sfeer, maar ook in het openbaar.
Zo is er een groot Phagwa feest op het Onafhankelijkheidsplein
te Paramaribo en in de Palmentuin.
Hou de lokale media in de gaten en kijk op het internet om
te ontdekken waar de diverse Holi Phagwa activiteiten worden
gehouden. Een goed advies: trek op de dag van Holi Phagwa niet
uw mooiste kleren aan. Want er is een grote kans dat ook u op
deze feestdag onder de gekleurde poeder komt te zitten.

Most colorful holiday in
Suriname: don’t miss it!
Everyone wishes each other a Subh Holi
Holi Phagwa is a colorful holiday in Suriname. Everyone participates, no matter their religion: Hindu, Christian,
Jewish, Muslim. Everyone wishes each other: Subh Holi!
Even though Holi Phagwa is originally a Hindu religion holiday,
in Suriname it is celebrated by everyone in the society. Proof
of the successful multicultural society, in which Suriname is
unique in the world. That is the reason that Holi Phagwa has
been declared a national holiday and the party is celebrated
exuberantly.
The Holi-party, that is this year celebrated on Wednesday,
March 23rd, is mainly characterized by singing, dancing, a lot
of food and spreading dye (Abier) and colored powder and
sprinkle each other with perfume. Phagwa is a combination of
a spring party, a party for the victory of good over bad and a
New Year’s party. According to the Gregorian calendar, this is
celebrated during spring and in the Hindu calendar the day
after full moon of the Phaalguna month. The holiday is named
after this month: Phagua/ Phagwa.
There is good reason that the party is also called Festival of
Colors, since the streets of Suriname, and above all Paramaribo,
are characterized by a patchwork of colors in forms of people
who are completely covered by the colored powder. The
various dyes symbolize the different colors and scents of the
blossomed nature. After all, humans are a part of the creation,
and therefore a part of the nature. Spring is also the time of
revival, prosperity and enlightenment, the symbol of new life
and hope.
In Suriname, cultural singing groups (Chautal) still go to the
temples, but also door to door to make music . DJs play very
loud music while a pool party is being held and the water is a
mishmash of different colors.
Parties are held in temples, in homes, in streets, in banquet
halls and open parks. Some parties are free and for others
organizations ask contributions.
Holi is also seen as a celebration of unity. Holi is always
celebrated with a group of people: friends, family, acquaintances,
colleagues or strangers. On Holi Phagwa day, everyone is one.
There is no distinction between status, wealth, poverty, boss and
employee. It is the beginning of a clean slate, where everyone

is considered equal. Everyone laughs, drinks, dances, eats and
has fun and sprinkles each other with colored powder and
perfume. This powder expresses that everybody has different
colors, but still is the same.
The night before Holi, there is Holika Dahan; the pyre that
symbolizes evil is then burned. On the day itself, there are
activities in the domestic sphere, but also in public . For instance,
there is a large Phagwa celebration at the Independence
Square in Paramaribo and in the Palm Garden. Keep an eye
on the local media and search the internet to find out where
various Holi Phagwa activities are hosted. Good advice: don’t
wear your nicest clothes on Holi Phagwa. Because there is a
big chance that you will end up colored with powder on this
public holiday.

The following travel advice will make your journey more comfortable:
STOELRIEMEN Maak vóór de start en landing uw stoelriemen vast. Houdt
deze om zolang het ‘fasten seat belt’ -lichtje aan is. Ervaren reizigers houden
de riemen de gehele reis losjes om. Dit uit zorg voor plotselinge turbulentie.
YOUR SEATBELTS Before take off and landing, fasten your seatbelts and keep
these fastened until the ‘fasten seat belt sign’ is turned off. As a precaution, you
may keep your seatbelt loosely fastened during the entire flight.
ONTSPANNING Wij kunnen u voorzien van kranten en tijdschriften. Op de
Mid-Atlantische route worden tijdens de reis films vertoond, terwijl u met behulp van uw koptelefoon kunt genieten van films en aangename muziek. Door
de atmosfeer in de cabine en het stilzitten kunnen uw voeten opzwellen. Draag
daarom ruimzittende schoenen of slippers.
RELAXATION A selection of international newspapers and magazines is available
on the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v.v). And you can also enjoy
music and films via headsets. Because of the cabin pressure and enforced sitting
for several hours, your feet may become swollen. Wear, therefore, roomy shoes
or slippers.
SPECIALE MAALTIJDEN Gebruikt u op doktersvoorschrift of uit geloofsovertuiging speciale maaltijden, dan serveren wij zolang het kan, die graag. Maak uw
verzoeken duidelijk kenbaar bij de reservering van uw vlucht.
SPECIAL MEALS Special meal requests, either because of medical or religious can
be fulfilled. Please advise us of this when making flight reservations.
GEZONDHEID In het vliegtuig is de lucht droger dan daarbuiten. Drink daarom zoveel mogelijk tijdens een vlucht. Alcohol, koffie en thee onttrekken vocht
aan het lichaam, beperk daarom het gebruik. Beweeg (zeker op lange vluchten)
zoveel mogelijk. In de magazine staan er oefeningen die u in uw stoel kunt doen.
De boordapotheek bevat medicijnen voor de meest voorkomende kwaaltjes.
Gebruikt u medicijnen, neem die dan altijd mee in uw handbagage.
KINDEREN Reist u met een baby? De steward(ess) maakt graag het flesje voor
de baby klaar. Waarschuw op tijd, dan hoeft uw kleintje niet te wachten. Op
de Mid-Atlantische route (Paramaribo – Amsterdam v.v.) kunnen wij u ook bij
noodgevallen voor babyvoeding en luiers zorgen. Laat uw kinderen veel drinken. Geeft u borstvoeding drink dan zelf ook meer dan normaal. Geef uw
baby bij start en landing een fopspeen of flesje met drinken, om de druk op de
trommelvliezen te verminderen. Een ouder kind geeft u een zuigsnoepje of een
stukje kauwgum. Zelf kunt u eventueel ook geeuwen of slikken om de druk te
verminderen.
ELEKTRONISCHE APPARATUUR In het vliegtuig mag u geen apparaten gebruiken waarin een zender of ontvanger zijn verwerkt. Mobiele telefoons en
laptops werken namelijk storend op het gevoelige navigatie systeem van het
vliegtuig.
HANDBAGAGE Iedere passagier mag één (1) stuk handbagage meenemen.
Het moet van een dergelijk formaat zijn dat u het kwijt kunt onder uw stoel.
De bergplaatsen boven uw hoofd zijn alleen bestemd voor lichte artikelen, zoals hoeden, mantels en andere lichte artikelen. Open de klep voorzichtig en
kijk bij het opendoen van de hat-rack uit dat de spullen erin niet eruit vallen.
HEALTH The atmosphere inside the aircraft is dryer than that on the ground ,
therefore you should drink as much as possible during a flight . Alcohol , coffee
and tea however, remove fluids from the body . Use these stimulans as little as
possible. Move about as much as possible ( especially on longer flights ). In the
magazine you will find exercises which you can do while sitting in your aircraft
seat. The medical dispensary on board contains medicine for the most anticipated
minor complaints . If you take medicine regularly , be sure to always place this in
your hand baggage.
CHILDREN Are you traveling with a baby? The steward(ess) will gladly prepare the
baby bottle for you. Please give sufficient advance notice so that your baby does not
have to wait. On the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v. v.) we can in
case of emergency also provide baby food and diapers(limited available). For older
children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must drink a
lot. If you are breast- feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give your
baby a pacifier or a bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give
an older child either candy or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or
swallow to lessen the pressure.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use
electronic equipment with transmitters and receivers. The use of cellular phones,
laptops and other electronic equipment can disrupt the sensitive navigation system
and are not allowed during take-off and landing.

Dag van feest en herdenken
Er is geen feestdag in Suriname die zo intens wordt gevierd als Ketikoti. Ketikoti betekent ‘Verbroken Ketenen’
en symboliseert de afschaffing van de slavernij op 1 juli 1863 in de toenmalige koloniën Suriname en de
Nederlandse Antillen en daarmee de afsluiting van een donkere periode in de Surinaamse en Nederlandse
geschiedenis. 1 juli is in Suriname maar ook in Nederland een dag van veel emoties voor Surinamers. In
Suriname heet deze dag officieel ‘Dag der Vrijheden’ om zo deze dag voor alle inwoners van het land een
feestdag te laten zijn en niet alleen voor de nazaten van de slaven.
Het (mee) vieren van Ketikoti in Suriname
is een belevenis, een spektakel welke het
beste in de Surinamers naar boven brengt.
Zo is Paramaribo één groot kleurrijk en
vrolijk feestterrein waar gegeten, gedanst
en herdacht wordt. Het bijzondere aan de
viering is dat iedereen (mannen, vrouwen
en kinderen) de mooiste kleding (vaak
traditionele kleding) uit de kast haalt,
waardoor er een bonte verzameling aan
mensen ontstaat. Het is ook een dag van
zien en gezien worden.
In Suriname begint Ketikoti op 1 juli in de kerk met verschillende
dankdiensten en boodschappen over wat de afschaffing het land
en haar bevolking heeft gebracht.Vervolgens is een bezoek aan
het Onafhankelijkheidsplein en de Palmentuin warm aan te
bevelen. Hier vindt u een overvloed aan traditionele Creoolse
gerechten, gebak en drank zijn er in overvloed, terwijl bijna
iedereen in een koto, moderne koto of pangi (omslagdoek)
gekleed is. Een schitterend gezicht.
Met de jaarlijkse Ketikoti herdenking op 1 juli staan alle
Surinamers (waar ook ter wereld) stil bij het verleden, kijken
vooruit naar de toekomst en vieren vrijheid, gelijkheid en
verbondenheid.
Herdenkingsdag:
Eén dag vóór Ketikoti is er een herdenkingsdag. Op 30 juni
worden de slachtoffers van de slavernij herdacht. Op deze
dag wordt er om acht uur s’ avonds twee minuten stilte in
acht genomen. De sfeer is plechtig en ingetogen. Op deze
herdenkingsdag dragen de meeste vrouwen
witte jurken (koto). De punten van hun
hoofddoeken zijn naar binnen gestopt, als
teken van verdriet. De kleur wit is in Suriname
en op de Antillen de officiële rouwkleur.
Kwakoe
Bij de herdenking van 100 jaar Ketikoti oftewel
Manspasi in 1963 werd in Paramaribo het
standbeeld Kwakoe onthuld. Kwakoe stelt een
weggelopen slaaf voor, die het symbool is voor
de drang naar vrijheid. De naam is afkomstig
uit de Afrikaanse traditie, waarbij kinderen
de naam van hun geboortedag dragen. Kwakoe is de naam voor
mannen geboren op de woensdag en aangezien 1 juli 1963 viel
op een woensdag, kreeg het standbeeld de naam Kwakoe. De
onthulling werd aan de vooravond van 1 juli 1963 onder grote
publieke belangstelling verricht door premier Johan A. Pengel.
Dit symbool voor de vrijheid is een monument van Jozef
Ludwig Klas (1923 - 1996) en staat op één van de drukste
verkeersaders in Paramaribo, te weten op de hoek van de
Zwartenhovenbrugstraat en de Dokter Sophie Redmondstraat,
vlakbij de altijd levendige bus standplaats die bekend staat als
Ondrobon. Elk jaar worden er tijdens de viering bloemen en
kransen gelegd, terwijl het standbeeld regelmatig het trefpunt is
voor konmankra (ontmoetingen) en manifestaties. Een bezoek
aan dit voor Surinamers bijzondere beeld is op Ketikoti beslist
aan te raden en u zult merken dat er veel respect bestaat voor dit
symbool van vrijheid.

No holiday in Suriname is celebrated so intensely as Ketikoti. Ketikoti means ‘Disconnected Chains’ and symbolizes

end of a dark period in the Surinamese and Dutch history. July 1st is both in Suriname as well as in the Netherlands

is one big colorful and joyful festival area for eating, dancing and
commemorating. The special feature of this celebration, is that
everyone (men, women and children) get their best clothes (often
traditional) from their closet, because of which a diverse collection of
people is created. It’s also a day to see and be seen.
In Suriname, Ketikoti starts in the church on July 1st with several
thank services and messages about what abolishment has brought
the country and its population. After that, a visit to the Independence
Square and the Palm Garden is warmly recommended. Here you will
find an abundance of traditional Creole dishes, pastries and drinks
are fully available, while almost everyone is dressed in a koto, modern
koto or pangi (wrap).Truly a beautiful sight.
During the annual Ketikoti commemoration on July 1st, all Surinamese
(around the world) dwell on the past, look ahead to the future and
celebrate freedom, equality and solidarity.
Memorial day:
One day before Ketikoti it’s memorial day. On June
30th, the victims of slavery are commemorated. On
this day, at eight o’clock in the evening, two minutes
of silence are held. The atmosphere is solemn and
subdued. On this memorial day, most women wear
white dresses (koto). The tips of their headscarves
have tucked in, as a sign of grief. The color white is
the official color of mourning in Suriname and the
Netherlands Antilles.
Kwakoe
In 1963, the 100 year’s commemoration of Ketikoti, also known as
Manspasi, statue Kwakoe was revealed in Paramaribo. Kwakoe stands
for a runaway slave, who is the symbol of the drive for freedom. The
name comes from the African tradition, where children use the surname
of their birthday. Kwakoe is the name for people born on Wednesday.
Since July 1st, 1963 was a Wednesday, the statue was named Kwakoe.
The unveiling was done by Prime Minister Johan A. Pengel on the evening
of July 1st 1963 with much public interest.
This symbol of freedom is a monument of Jozef Ludwig Klas (1923 1996) and is located on one of the busiest roads in Paramaribo, on the
corner of Zwartenhovenbrugstraat and Dokter Sophie Redmond Street,
nearby the always lively bus stand, which is known as Ondrobon. Each
year, flowers and wreaths are brought during the celebration and the
statue is frequently the venue for konmankra (meetings) and events.
A visit to this for Surinamese special statue on Ketikoti is definitely
recommend and you will find that there is a lot of respect for this
symbol of freedom.

“DE HELE WERELD IN ÉÉN LAND,
DAT IS BIJZONDER”
Toeristen maken kennis met de bekendste hotspots in de stad, bezoeken het binnenland en eten bij de restaurants
die worden aanbevolen door de lokale reisgids. Hoe zou het zijn om voor langere tijd in Suriname te wonen?
Steeds meer buitenlanders en remigranten komen hun mogelijkheden op de Surinaamse arbeidsmarkt benutten.
Expats worden ingevlogen om met hun kennis en kunde bij te dragen aan de verdere ontwikkeling van het land.
Hoe wordt Switi Sranan door deze nieuwkomers ervaren?
Robelys Mujica is een vijfentwintigjarige modefotograaf uit Venezuela. Ze verhuisde ruim zeven maanden geleden naar Suriname en
volgt daarmee in de voetsporen van haar vader, die hier tien jaar
geleden neerstreek. “Hij raakte niet uitgepraat over Suriname. Nu
het in Venezuela steeds lastiger wordt om rond te komen, besloot
ik om de stap te wagen.” Robelys heeft haar eerste indruk van het
land inmiddels bijgesteld.“Toen ik hier net aankwam had ik het idee
dat Suriname een arm land was. Pas toen ik in gesprek raakte met
de mensen, meer over het land te weten kwam en ook het binnenland leerde kennen, ben ik van gedachte veranderd. Suriname is
heel erg rijk aan cultuur. Dat vind ik veel belangrijker. Ik ben onder
de indruk van de manier waarop zoveel verschillende religies en
culturen, met respect voor elkaar, in vrede kunnen samenleven.”
Wat haar carrière betreft is Robelys erg blij met haar keuze voor
Suriname. “Ik krijg hier zoveel kansen zodat ik echt kan groeien
in mijn werk.” Overeenkomsten met haar moederland Venezuela
heeft ze nog niet kunnen ontdekken. “We spreken alleen maar
Spaans. Hier hoor je op straat zoveel verschillende talen.”
Typisch Surinaams is de rijke eetcultuur. Dit is één van Alecsandro
Reinhel (34) zijn favoriete aspecten. Hij verliet zijn geboorteland
Brazilië recentelijk.Als onderdeel van de Braziliaanse legerdelegatie
is hij hier voor een jaar om het nationale leger van Suriname te ondersteunen als sportadviseur. “Voordat ik naar Suriname afreisde,
wist ik helemaal niets van het land. Nu kan ik je van alles vertellen
over de prachtige natuur, het uitgaansleven en de nieuwe dansstijlen die ik hier tegenkom. Het eten heeft me echt gefascineerd.
Koken is mijn passie en hier leer ik zoveel nieuwe ingrediënten,
bereidingswijzen en recepten dat ik mijn gastronomische kennis
enorm heb kunnen uitbreiden.” Het is Alecsandro opgevallen dat
Suriname, net als Brazilië, een tropisch klimaat heeft met even warme en hartelijke mensen. “Van Nickerie tot Brokopondo is iedereen erg ontvankelijk en geduldig als ze door hebben dat ik moeite
doe om de Nederlandse taal te leren. Dit vind ik heel bijzonder
van de Surinamers.” Naast de hartelijkheid is het de culturele diversiteit die Alescandro het gevoel geeft dat hij binnen één land een
wereldreis kan maken. “Ik hoor steeds andere muziekstijlen op de
radio, zie veel verschillende religieuze gebouwen in de stad en vind
het leuk dat mensen er in het dagelijkse leven hun eigen kleding
stijl op nahouden. Het is me ook opgevallen dat Surinamers de
belangrijke traditionele festivals samen vieren.”
Toen Matt Terrebonne aankwam uit Amerika voelde hij direct de
van nature vriendelijke aard van de Surinamers. Hij verhuisde in
april 2014 naar Suriname om als ingenieur zijn bijdrage te leveren
aan de bouw van de nieuwe Amerikaanse ambassade. “Gelijk bij
mijn eerste restaurantbezoek kwam de ober naast me zitten om
me te adviseren over wat er te doen is, waar ik lekker kan eten en
hoe ik me kan vermaken op de nationale vrije dagen. Hij was duidelijk erg trots op zijn land.” Er zijn wel een paar dingen waar Matt
wat lastiger aan kon wennen. “Het links leren rijden heeft me wel
wat tijd gekost. Ook de aanpassing aan het algemene levensritme,
dat een stuk relaxter is dan in het hectische Amerika, heeft even
geduurd.” Als hij gedwongen wordt zijn beste herinnering te kiezen
dan is het de nieuwsjaarviering die hij nog vers in zijn geheugen
heeft. “Suriname heeft het beste nieuwjaarsfeest dat ik ooit heb
mogen meemaken.” Na anderhalf jaar deelt Matt graag zijn gedachten over hoe hij het land heeft leren kennen. “Niet alleen is het
een multi-etnisch land. In Suriname leven verschillende culturen in
harmonie met elkaar. Het lijkt erop dat iedereen het met elkaar
kan vinden. Er zijn weinig andere plekken waar zulke verschillende
mensen zo gebroederlijk naast elkaar leven.”
Robelys, Alecsandro and Matt zijn gaan houden van de mensen,
het eten en de culturele diversiteit. Een culturele mengelmoes
die niet alleen hun eigen integratie een stuk gemakkelijker
maakt maar waar ze gedurende hun verblijf ook zelf hun steentje aan bijdragen.

If you’re solely on a holiday, you will get to know the hot-spots, travel the outback, visit some of the wellknown restaurants, all guided by your travel guide. What if you are able to call Suriname your home for a
while? More and more newcomers and re-migrants come to explore the job opportunities in Suriname.
Expats are flown in to share their knowledge and expertise, as well as to help further the development of
the country. How do these foreigners experience Switi Sranan?
Robelys Mujica is a twenty-five year old fashion photographer
from Venezuela. She moved to Suriname seven months ago, and
by doing so, she followed her father who has already been here
for over ten years. “He kept telling me how nice the country is.
And because of the difficult situation in Venezuela at the moment, I decided to give it a try.” Robelys learned that the country
is not what it looks like, when you first arrive here. “I had the impression that Suriname is a poor country. When I started to talk
to people, got to know more about the country, and visited the
forest, I changed my mind. Suriname is very rich in its culture. To
me, that is more important. I’m very impressed by how people
with different cultures and religions can actually live in peace
and respect each other.” Concerning her career, she is happy to
have made the move. “Being here gives me the change to grow,
and I have been given a lot of opportunities to do so.” Robelys
cannot find any similarities with her homeland Venezuela. “You
even hear different languages on the street. In Venezuela, we
just speak Spanish.”
A typical thing about Suriname is the food. This is one of Alecsandro Reinheil’s (34) favourite aspects. He recently left his
homeland Brazil. As part of the delegation from the Brazilian
army, he is here for a year to assist the national army as a
sports advisor. “Before I arrived here, I didn’t know a thing about
Suriname. Now, I can tell you about the beautiful nature, the
attractive nights and joyful new dances I am learning, but what
honestly fascinates me the most, is the food! I love cooking, and
here I am in contact with different spices, cultures, ingredients
and recipes. It is enriching my gastronomic cultural baggage.”
As Brazil, Suriname is a country with a tropical climate and
warmhearted people, Alescandro noticed. “People from Nickerie
to Brokopondo are very receptive and patient with me, once
they see I’m trying to learn Dutch. This definitely attracts me to
the Surinamese people.” Apart from the warmhearted people, it
is the ethnic diversity that gives Alecsandro a great trip around
the world in just one country. “I hear the diversity of Suriname
by listening to all types of music on the radio, and also seeing
various religious buildings. I’ve noticed that people celebrate important traditional festivals together, and dress very differently
in every day life.”
When Matt Terrebonne (25) first arrived here from America, he
immediately felt the friendly nature of the Surinamese people.
He moved to Suriname in April 2014 to work as an engineer
on the new American embassy project. “During my first meal
in-country, my waiter sat down and gave me recommendations
for pretty much everything; on what to do, where to eat, and
where I need to go to celebrate the local holidays. I could tell he
was very proud of his country.” There are a few things in which
Matt experienced some difficulties getting used to. “Learning
to drive on the other side of the road took some time. Also, the
pace of life in general is much more relaxed than the hectic
pace of life in America.” When forced to choose his favourite
thing about Suriname, Matt has a fresh memory of the New
Year’s celebration. “This is the best New Year’s celebration I’ve
ever participated in.” After a year and a half, Matt shares his
thoughts on Suriname. “Not only is it multi-ethnic, but it’s a harmonious coexistence of cultures. Everyone seems to get along
here. There are few other places in the world in which you can
you find those two as neighbours.”
Robelys, Alecsandro and Matt love the people, the food and the
diversity that helps them blend in easily. They actually add even
more diversity to a country that’s already known for it.

Het wordt alweer de zesde editie van het Suriname Heritage Festival. De maand maart is door Sherida Mormon, directeur
van ABIC (Advice for Business Innovation & Creation) uitgeroepen tot Heritage maand.Vooral de weekenden zullen bol
staan van de bruisende cultuur, bewogen geschiedenis en fantastische natuur van Suriname.“Wij gaan onze saamhorigheid
als Surinamer laten zien”, zegt Mormon.
Het thema voor dit jaar is ‘Sweet as Honey’. Honing is plezierig,
lekker en gezond en voor alle leeftijden. Het Suriname Heritage
Festival zal zich dan ook kenmerken door verschillende
hoogtepunten rond dit thema tijdens de vier weekenden in
maart. Fish ’n Grill, een family day, de Heritage Fashion Show,
Streetdiner, en The Honey Tour afgewisseld met andere
exclusieve tours.
Kokos en honing in Coronie
Aangezien het thema dit jaar onlosmakelijk verbonden is aan
het kokosdistrict Coronie staan er ook tours naar het westen
op het programma. Tijdens de tour komen de geschiedenis en
de ontwikkeling van de honingsector en de volksvertellingen
over de honing voorbij, terwijl het smullen wordt van
honingthee met honingkoekjes, kokoswater als ook moksi aleysi
met kokosmelk en gebakken vis met honingsaus.
Cultuur te Fort Nieuw Amsterdam
De creatieveling krijgt het cultureel podium te Fort Nieuw
Amsterdam in het district Commewijne. Op dit podium komen
alle volkeren bijeen en staan gastoptredens uit Nederland,
Guyana, Frans Guyana en Brazilië op programma. De diverse
cultuur uitingen op schema zijn dansoptredens, huwelijken,
vuurdansen en uiteraard kan de bezoeker overheerlijk eten
en typische dranken verkrijgen. Verder zijn er nog storytelling,
kinderspelen, toneel, muziek, zang, craft, spokenword en film.
Interessant is ook het talen programma waarbij het leren van
de taal van een ander aan de orde komt.
De activiteiten moeten bij elkaar 20.000 bezoekers gaan
trekken, terwijl met live uitzendingen via televisie en internet
het bereik nog groter wordt. Het Suriname Heritage Festival
staat garant voor genieten en smullen, maar zeker ook voor
het opdoen van kennis over Suriname. Het is dus zeker aan te
bevelen om tijd vrij te maken en het festival te bezoeken.
Bijen te Peperpot Discovery Center
Onlangs –oktober 2015- is een geheel nieuw educatief centrum
genaamd Peperpot Discovery Center geopend in Commewijne.
Jong en oud, Surinamers en toeristen komen er langs en horen
de rijke verhalen van de oude plantage en het district, terwijl er
gewandeld kan worden in het prachtige natuurpark. Tijdens het
Suriname Heritage Festival zal het educatief centrum de gehele
maand door aandacht besteden aan de wereld van de bijen en
hun honing. Er zijn speurtochten, puzzels en spelletjes voor de
kinderen.Voor de ouderen zijn er de Nature and Heritage walks
en speurtochten.

The sixth edition of the Suriname Heritage Festival is forthcoming. Sherida Mormon, director of Advice for Business Innovation &
Creation (ABIC), has proclaimed the month March Heritage Month. Especially the weekends will be full of vibrant culture, turbulent
history and the amazing nature of Suriname.“We will show our solidarity as Surinamese,” says Mormon.
This year’s theme is ‘Sweet as Honey’. Honey is enjoyable, tasty and
healthy for all ages. The Suriname Heritage Festival will therefore
be characterized by several highlights on this theme during the four
weekends in March. Fish ’n Grill, a family day, the Heritage Fashion
Show, a Streetdiner, and The Honey Tour, interspersed with other
exclusive tours.
Culture at Fort New Amsterdam

Activities are planned to attract 20,000 visitors. Live broadcasts
via television and the Internet increase the range even further. The

children plays, theater, music, singing, crafting, spoken word and film.

visitors can learn the other languages.
Bees at Peperpot Discovery Center
Recently – October 2015 – a new educational center has been
opened in Commewijne, named Peperpot Discovery Center.
Young and old, Surinamese and tourists get together and hear the
rich stories of the old plantation and the district, while you can walk
in the beautiful park. During the Suriname Heritage Festival the
educational center will be dedicated to the world of bees and their
honey. There will be treasure hunts, puzzles and games for children.
For the adults there are Nature and Heritage Walks and quests.
Coconut and honey in Coronie
Since the theme of this year’s festival is inseparably connected to the
coconut district Coronie there are also tours scheduled to the west.
During the tour, the history and development of the honey sector are

“Tijdens het dansen werk je van binnen aan je schoonheid van buiten”, straalt Marlène Lie a Ling. In haar ogen zien we weer even
dat vijfjarige meisje dat voor het eerst de dansvloer betreedt. Een paar dagen voor de onafhankelijkheid in 1975 opent Lie a Ling
haar eigen balletschool. Ruim veertig jaar na dato ontmoeten we deze bijzondere en passievolle vrouw.
Balletschool Marlène is te betreden via een rode loper. Aan
de voorgevel hangt een barre, de houten stok waaraan de
opwarmoefeningen door de ballerina’s worden uitgevoerd. Lie a
Ling, ze is nu 68, ziet er uit alsof ze ieder moment het podium weer
gaat betreden. Toch is het pas vijftien jaar geleden dat ze zelf haar
laatste show opvoerde. “Omdat de dansers tijd nodig hadden om
zich om te kleden en even tot rust te komen, heb ik tijdens de
voorstelling nog een laatste solo gedanst.”
Lie a Ling is twintig als ze naar Nederland vertrekt voor haar
professionele dansopleiding. Haar doel was haar toen al overduidelijk.
“Alles wat ik had ervaren en beleefd via de dans, vooral hoe je
gelukkig kunt zijn, wilde ik graag doorgeven aan Suriname.” Dit
leidde tot de oprichting van haar balletschool. Maar dit was nog niet
genoeg. Elf jaar later startte ze de Dance Company om excellente

leerlingen op semiprofessioneel niveau ook een internationaal
platform te kunnen geven.
Even blijft het stil, als de anders zo breedsprakerige Lie a Ling zich
naar binnen richt om onder woorden te kunnen brengen wat het
dansen voor haar betekent. “Ik heb mezelf een betere plek kunnen
geven in het leven. Het is voor mij niet zonder tegenslagen gebleven
en dansen heeft me door deze moeilijke tijden heen geholpen.” Al
te lang wil ze hier niet bij stilstaan. Haar blik richt ze altijd op de
toekomst.“Via de dans heb ik leren doorzetten, kan ik beter omgaan
met veranderingen en heb ik van mezelf leren houden.” En dit draagt
ze graag over op haar pupillen en de instructeurs, die ze nog altijd
zelf opleidt. “Ik doe het nu vooral voor de Surinaamse jeugd en geef
ze een stukje extra bagage mee.” Voor Lie a Ling draagt de danskunst
bij aan de totale vorming van het kind. “De school zorgt voor de

kennis, de ouders voor de normen en waarden en ik werk aan de
ontwikkeling van de ziel van de kinderen.”
Ze zou kunnen refereren aan haar lijst met producties, gewonnen
prijzen en internationaal succesvolle pupillen, maar als ze terugkijkt
op haar veertig jarige bestaan dan glundert ze pas echt bij de gedachte
aan de vele leerlingen die de school hebben bezocht. “Als ik oud
leerlingen tegenkom, vertellen ze me hoeveel het dansen voor ze
heeft betekent, dat realiseren ze zich vaak op latere leeftijd pas. Ik ben
hun balletmama zeggen ze dan.” Door de president is ze gedecoreerd
met het groot lint. “Dat is voor mij een grote erkenning voor mijn
werk want het is een onderscheiding voor personen die veel voor de
ontwikkeling van Suriname hebben betekent.”
Uiteraard zijn er de afgelopen veertig jaar ook moeilijke momenten
geweest. Deze hingen vooral samen met de situatie in het land. Het
bestaan van de balletschool is hierdoor echter nooit echt in gevaar
gekomen. “Er is geen enkele reden waardoor je niet zou kunnen
dansen, we hebben hier zelfs met kaarsen aan gedanst op momenten
dat de elektriciteit ontbrak.”
Haar succes zou kunnen zitten in haar aanpak. “Mensen die me niet
goed kennen of niet aan het werk hebben gezien, noemen me streng,
maar dat ben ik niet, ik ben gedisciplineerd”, licht Lie a Ling haar
instelling toe.“Je kunt nou eenmaal geen enkel niveau bereiken zonder
discipline.” Het ontwikkelen van zelfstandigheid en het aanspreken
van de intrinsieke motivatie staat bij haar pupillen dan ook centraal.
“Ik ben je baas niet, ik help je alleen maar, de muziek is je baas.”
Voor haar eigen choreografieën laat Lie a Ling zich inspireren door
Suriname en haar culturele diversiteit. Hierover is ze erg duidelijk.
“We zijn allemaal Surinamers. Of we nu van Creoolse, Hindoestaanse,
Javaanse of Inheemse afkomst zijn. Ik vind dat we over de etnische
scheidslijnen heen moeten kijken en daarmee werk ik.” Door ook de
diverse folkloristische dansstijlen aan te bieden, hoopt Lie a Ling het
Surinaams erfgoed te cultiveren. “Wat ik gedaan heb, is slechts het
leggen van de basis voor Surinaamse dans.”
De tijd in aanloop naar haar volgende lustrum besteedt ze aan
het vastleggen van haar werk zodat het in de toekomst opnieuw
uitgevoerd kan worden. “We zijn een school met een repertoire, dat
betekent dat we alle kostuums en choreografieën van de afgelopen
veertig jaar bewaard hebben en altijd ready zijn om ze weer uit te
voeren.”

“While dancing you work on your beauty from inside out”, Marlène Lie a Ling says brightly. In her eyes, we can see the five
year old girl, who entered the dance floor for the first time. A few days before the independence in 1975, Lie a Ling opened
her own ballet school. Over forty years later, we finally met this exceptional and passionate woman.
Ballet school Marlène can be entered by walking over a red carpet.
At the front of the building, you will find a barre, a wooden stick to
which the ballerinas will do their warm-up exercises. Lie a Ling, 68
years old now, looks like she could once again enter the stage at
any given time. However, it has only been fifteen years since she
performed her last show. “Because dancers needed time to change
and get their rest, I performed my last solo during that performance.”
Lie a Ling explains.
Lie a Ling is twenty years old when she moves to the Netherlands
for a professional dance education. Her goal was very clear even
back then. “Everything I had been experienced and lived is through
dance, especially how to be happy, is something I wanted to pass on
to Suriname.” All this led to establishing the ballet school, but this

wasn’t enough just yet. Eleven years later, she also started the Dance
Company, which gave excellent students on a semi-professional level,
a chance at the international stage.
It remains quiet for a bit. The usually very outspoken Lie a Ling digs
deep to find the words as to what dancing means to her. “I have been
able to give myself a better place in life. It hasn’t been rainbows and
sunshine all the time and dancing helped me through these periods”.
She hasn’t wanted to think about this for a while. Her focus is always
on the future. “Through dance I have learned to keep going. I am
better at coping with changes and I’ve learned to love myself.” This
is something she also wants to teach her students and instructors,
whom she still trains herself. “I’m doing it for the Surinam youth,
and want to give them a little extra baggage.” The art of dance is

something Lie a Ling considers to be an extra incentive to give a kid.
“School takes care of knowledge, the parents give them norms and
values, and I work towards the soul of the children.”
She could refer to her list of productions, her awards and international
successes of her students, but if she looks back at the last forty
years, she really starts shining when she thinks back to the many
students who have visited the school. “When I see some of my former
students, they always tell me how much dance has meant to their
lives. Something they only realize when they get to an older age. I am
their ballet mom, is what they tell me.” She has been decorated with
a ribbon by the president. “For me this means a big recognition for my
work since it is a distinction to people who have meant a lot to the
development of Suriname.”
Obviously, the last forty years haven’t been without challenges. These
usually came hand-in-hand with the situation of the country. The
existence of the ballet school has never been in jeopardy because
of it. “There isn’t a single reason as to why you shouldn’t dance, like
when we have been dancing with the candles on , when the electricity
had been cut off ”.
Her success could be because of her approach. “People who don’t
know me well or haven’t seen me at work will call me strict, but I am
not strict. I am disciplined.” is what Lie a Ling says about her way
of looking at things. “It is a fact you can’t reach any level without
some sort of discipline.” The development of being independent and
touching base with your intrinsic motivation, is the main focus of her
students. “I am not your boss. I am only here to help. Let the music
be your boss.”
For her own choreographies, Lie a Ling gets her inspiration from
Suriname and her cultural diversity. She is very clear on this. “We
are all Surinamese. Whether we are of Creole, Hindi, Javanese or
Indigenous origin. I think we need to drop the ethnic dividing lines
,and that’s how I work.” By also offering different folkloric dancing
styles, Lie a Ling hopes to cultivate the Suriname heritage. “What I
have done, is simply laid the foundation for the Suriname dance.
While she is working towards her next luster, she spends time
capturing her work so she can use it again in the future. “We are a
school with a repertoire, which means we keep all the costumes and
choreographies of the last forty years, so at any given time we can
perform it again.”

Zo divers qua bevolking als het land Suriname zelf is, zo
bijzonder is het ook dat haar bewoners over de hele
aardbol uitgewaaierd zijn. Fotograaf Raul Neijhorst wil met
zijn nieuwe fotoboek bekende en bijzondere Surinamers
in Suriname, Nederland en andere landen van de wereld
zichtbaar maken.
“Surinamers zijn één bijzonder volk met bijzondere talenten
waar ter wereld ze ook wonen en iedereen mag dat weten: Ik
wil de hele wereld laten zien dat Surinamers mooie, bijzondere
en talentvolle mensen zijn. Dat is mijn droom en het doel van
mijn fotoboek: “Suriname beken(d)t”. Ik wil dat Surinamers na
het lezen van mijn fotoboek een trots gevoel overhouden en dat
de foto’s en verhalen van de succesvolle Surinamers hun zullen
inspireren”.
Aan het woord is de bekende Surinaamse fotograaf Raul
Neijhorst die een fotoboek heeft uitgegeven met 75 bekende
én bijzondere Surinamers. Er zijn veel Surinamers over de hele
wereld die goed bezig zijn en mooie dingen bereiken, maar voor
velen vaak toch nog onbekend zijn. En daar wil ik via mijn boek

verandering in brengen”, aldus fotograaf Raul Neijhorst die voor
zijn foto’s voor het boek afreisde naar Suriname, Nederland,
Engeland en de Verenigde Staten. Want succesvolle Surinamers
zijn te vinden over de gehele wereld.
De keuze voor 75 personen met een sterke binding met
Suriname was ingewikkeld. Zonder te passeren, zonder afbreuk
te doen, zonder te verwaarlozen, zonder te …, is er een groep
van 75 BS-ers ( Bekende Surinamers) ontstaan. Allen hebben
hun sporen nagelaten in een samenleving waarin zij Suriname
uitdragen. En ja, 75 is eigenlijk weinig, want Suriname kent ruim
900.000 bijzondere mensen. Ongeveer 500.000 gevestigd in
Suriname en de rest in Nederland, Amerika, Curaçao en nog vele
andere landen in de wereld.
Suriname beken(d)t is een bijzonder boek geworden. Naast 2
portretten per persoon vindt er ook een interview plaats. Beeld,
tekst en persoon vloeien zo samen tot een onverwacht artikel.
Wat het boek een extra tintje geeft, is dat de BS’ers een geheim
moeten blootgeven. “ We zien dus een andere zijde van ze, zoals
we hen niet kennen”, aldus Raul Neijhorst, “Een kickbokser die
salsa danst, een rapper die kok wil worden, een presentator die
vast zat? Geheimen worden blootgegeven en dat geeft het boek
een extra dimensie.
Het jaar 2015 was een feestelijk jaar voor Suriname. En voor alle
Surinamers! Op 25 november 1975 werd het land zelfstandig en
zodoende viert men een jaar lang haar veertigste verjaardag als
Republiek Suriname. Een perfect moment voor Raul Neijhorst
om te laten zien dat ‘we’ het helemaal niet zo gek doen op deze
aardbol. “Ik hoop op meer kennis, respect en waardering voor
elkaar als Surinamers. We zijn als natie jong en niet groot, maar
bereiken veel. Daarbij maakt het niet uit waar we als Surinamers
wonen. We zijn als Surinamers één volk, één natie, Wan Pipel.
Surinamers mogen best trots zijn op landgenoten die het
internationaal goed doen. Dat gevoel van trots mis ik nog te vaak.
Ik hoop dat mijn boek daar verandering in kan brengen”.
We hebben succesvolle zangers, presentatoren, comedians,
sporters, zakenlui, juristen en ga zo maar door. Op diverse
werkvelden zijn we vertegenwoordigd. “Met mijn keuze voor
deze 75 ‘toevallig’ bekendere Surinamers wil ik andere mensen
die hun steentje bijdragen aan ontwikkeling, opbouw en vestiging
van onze culturele waarden natuurlijk niet teniet doen. Wie
weet zal ik ooit een boek maken ook voor juist de onzichtbare
Bijzondere Surinamers“, vertelt Raul Neijhorst.

IK STA MET 2 VOETEN IN 2 WERELDEN
Gedreven door een studie Technische Natuurkunde aan
de TU Delft kwam Raul (1981) in 2000 naar Nederland.
Drie jaren later vond hij de fotografie: beeld en esthetiek,
techniek en marketing werden zijn speerpunten en
zodoende heeft hij diverse successen geboekt op
nationaal en internationaal gebied. Publicaties in binnenen buitenland, gewonnen prijzen over de hele wereld
en talloze (commerciële) opdrachten en workshops in
Nederland, Suriname en op Curaçao.
Raul Neijhorst Raul draagt zijn moederland een warm
hart toe: een trotse Srananman met Surinaams paspoort
en meerdere malen per jaar in Suriname te vinden
voor diverse projecten en bezoek aan zijn thuishaven.
‘Net als veel anderen met een andere achtergrond dan
de Nederlandse sta ook ik met twee voeten in twee
werelden. Het was dat mijn studie niet in Suriname werd
aangeboden, maar anders…
‘Al sinds 2010 loop ik met het idee om Bijzondere
Surinamers te portretteren. Het plan nam verschillende
vormen aan en er werd lang nagedacht over de fotografie,
de opzet en wie geportretteerd zou moeten worden. Ook
wijlen Wesje en Clark Accord stonden op de lijst. Helaas
heeft het voor hun nooit zover mogen komen’. In 2015
werd de knoop doorgehakt en werd het project gestart.

“Surinamese are special people with special talents wherever in
the world they live and everyone may know this: I want to show
the world that Surinamese are beautiful, special and talented
people. That is my dream and the purpose of my photo book:
“Suriname beken(d)t”. I want Surinamese to get a proud feeling
after reading this book and the pictures and stories of successful
Surinamese to inspire them”.
These are the words of the famous Surinamese photographer
Raul Neijhorst, who published a photo book with 75 famous
and special Surinamese. “There are lots of Surinamese
all over the world that are doing well and achieve nice
things, but for many they are still unknown. And that
is what I want to change through my book”, says the

photographer Raul Neijhorst, who travelled to Suriname, the
Netherlands, England and the United States for his pictures.
Because successful Surinamese are found all over the world.
The choice for 75 people with a strong connection with Suriname
was complicated. Without disregarding, without prejudicing,
without neglecting, without …, there has been created a group
of 75 FS’s (Famous Surinamese). All have left their traces in a
society in which they propagate Suriname. And yes, 75, is actually
very little, because Suriname has over 900.000 special people.
About 500.000 of them are located in Suriname and the rest
in the Netherlands, the United States, Curacao and many more
countries over the world.
“Suriname beken(d)t” has become a special book. Besides 2
portraits a person, there is also an interview conducted. Image,
text and individual flow together into an unexpected article.What
gives the book an additional touch is that all FS’s must reveal
a secret. “So we see a different side of them, like we do not
know them”, says Raul Neijhorst, “A kick boxer dancing salsa, a
rapper who wants to become a cook, a presenter who has been
in jail? Secrets are being revealed and that gives the book an
extra dimension.
The year 2015 was a festive year for Suriname. And for all
Surinamese! On 25 November 1975, the country became
independent and that is why we celebrate its fortieth anniversary
as Republic of Suriname. The perfect moment for Raul Neijhorst
to show that ‘we’ are doing pretty well on this globe. “I am hoping
on more knowledge, respect and appreciation for each other as
Surinamese.We are a young nation and not so big, but we achieve
much. And it does not matter where we live as Surinamese. We
are one folk, one nation’ Wan Pipel’ as Surinamese. Surinamese
can be proud of nationals that do well internationally.That feeling
of proudness I still miss too often. I hope my book can change
that”.
We have successful singers, presenters, comedians, athletics,
businessmen, lawyers and so on. We are represented on various
fields. “With my choice for these 75 ‘happen to be’ famous
Surinamese, I do not want to neglect other people that play their
part in the development, construction and establishment of our
cultural beliefs.Who knows, I might create a book one day just for
the invisible Special Surinamese”, says Raul Neijhorst.

Driven by a study Applied Physics at the TU Delft, Raul
(1981) came to the Netherlands in 2000. Three years
later he found photography: image and aesthetic, technique
and marketing became his focus points and that is how
he achieved several successes both nationally as well
as internationally. Publications at home and abroad,
won awards all over the world and many (commercial)
assignments and workshops in the Netherlands, Suriname
and on Curacao.
Raul Neijhorst wishes his mother country a warm heart: a
proud Srananman with a Surinamese passport and is found
multiple times a year in Suriname for several projects and
for visiting his harbour.‘Just like many others with a different
background that the Dutch, I, too, stand with two feet in
two worlds. Unfortunately my study was not presented in
Suriname, but otherwise…
‘I have been carrying the idea to portrait Special Surinamese

were on the list. Unfortunately, it was not allowed to happen

Het enige terras in het hart van de stad waar het dagelijks leven vanzelf
aan je voorbij trekt. Tevens een goede tussenstop om tijdens het
shoppen weer even op adem te komen. Bestel binnen je koffie, kies je
snack uit het brede internationale aanbod of maak net als de Surinamer
een keuze uit de vele zoetigheden.Vanuit je ooghoek zie je de rij bij dé
schaafijsverkoper geen moment kleiner worden en rond het middaguur
vult de straat zich met scholieren die met hun uniformen het straatbeeld
van nog meer kleur voorzien.
Spanhoek Hotel terrace
Op de hoek van de Keizerstraat en Domineestraat is het tijdens
de spitsuren een drukte van jewelste. Het terras van het Spanhoek
hotel biedt beschutting en de hele dag door is een echte Surinaamse
maaltijd beschikbaar. Het terras is niet altijd even goed bezet, maar
het drukke verkeer en de vele passanten nemen je mee in het ritme
van de stad. Ook ben je slechts een korte wandeling verwijderd
van de rivier zodat een bezoekje aan de markt (rechtsaf) of de
waterkant (linksaf) het volgende doel kan zijn.

Echte Surinaamse broodjes in alle variaties die je maar kunt bedenken.
Werkend Suriname kan al decennia niet zonder. Tegen elf uur, als de
halve werkdag er voor velen al op zit brengt een korte stop en een
broodje met soft (frisdrank) even verlichting. Je kunt binnen plaatsnemen
in de airco, maar waarom zou je. Eet je broodje hangend aan een van de
tafeltjes en proef de sfeer van de informele ontmoetingen. Zorg ervoor
dat Krioro tijdens je stadswandeling op de route ligt.

Een beetje verstopt maar dit heerlijke plekje is de moeite van het vinden
waard. Binnen vind je een winkeltje met antiek, brocante en tweedehands
spulletjes die je verder niet veel zult vinden in Suriname. Ook in het
rekje met kleding vind je unieke items. Buiten kun je ontspannen en
achterover leunend, onder het genot van een hapje en een drankje, het
langzaam passerende verkeer gadeslaan. In de avond uurtjes komen
hier de oudere Surinaamse heren samen om tori te praten (verhalen
te vertellen) onder het genot van een spelletje en een borreltje. In het
weekend vind je hier regelmatig live muziek.

Een van de nieuwste aanwinsten in de stad. Je bereikt de bar, die vrijwel
uitsluitend bestaat uit een groot terras met hoge tafels afgewisseld door
ontspannende banken, door een van de meest authentieke straten
van de stad tot het einde uit te rijden. Via het nog onverharde deel
van de Dr. J.F. Nassylaan bereik je de buitenlocatie waar de eigenaren
met hun aanwezigheid een prettige persoonlijke stempel drukken op
de sfeer. Het is vooral een plek waar je in de avonduren goed kunt
vertoeven. Bestel een goede wijn en doe je tegoed aan de snackjes
op de menukaart. Hier worden ook regelmatig muzikale, culinaire en
culturele evenementen georganiseerd.

De ‘hotspot in town’ aan de steeds drukkere Van Sommelsdijckstraat en
onder een breed publiek bekend geworden dankzij haar Burger Battles.
Hier kun je aanschuiven voor een overheerlijke versgebakken steenoven
pizza of één van de typisch Amerikaanse grillgerechten. Bijna dagelijks
is het terras tot in de late uurtjes gevuld en kun je je ogen uitkijken en
bekeken worden. In het hart van het uitgaanscentrum is dit, een van de
best bezochte plekken waar je een gemêleerd publiek treft van expats,
ondernemers, stagiaires en de Surinaamse midden- en bovenklasse.

The only terrace in the heart of the city where daily life comes by on
its own. It is also a good place for a pit stop while you're shopping and
to catch your breath. Go inside to order a coffee, choose one of the
snacks of the large international choices or pick, like every Surinamer
would, one of the many sweets. From the corner of your eye, you will
see the line for the shaved ice salesman, which doesn’t seem to get
any shorter. Around midday, you will see the streets fill up with students
whose uniforms make the streetscape into an even more colorful one.

On the corner of the Keizerstraat and the Domineestraat it’s going to
be really busy during the rush hour. The terrace of the Spanhoekhotel
offers protection, and a traditional Surinam meal is available throughout
the day.The terrace won’t be completely packed most the time, but the
busy traffic situation, as well as the many people walking by, will result
into you blending in to the rhythm of the city. You are also just a small
distance away from the river which makes a visit to the market (on your
right) or the shoreline (on your left), something you could visit next.

Traditional Surinam sandwiches in all variations you could think of. The
working class of Surinam has been depending on it for centuries. Around
eleven o’clock, when half the working day has been finished for most
people, making a short stop and a sandwich with some ‘soft’ (soda) here
will offer you a bit of a relief.You could sit in the air-conditioned area, but
why would you do that? Just eat your sandwich while sitting at one of
the tables and taste the atmosphere of all the informal meetings around
you. Make sure you visit Krioro while you are walking across the city.

One of the city’s newest acquisitions. You can reach the bar, which is
mostly one large terrace with high tables and relaxing couches, by
driving to the end of one of the city’s most authentic streets. Through

locations, where the owners of the place will entertain the crowd with
their own personal mark. It is especially a place where it is great to be
at during the evening. Order one of the fine wines and enjoy one of the
snacks you can find on the menu.You will also find musical, culinary, and
cultural events on a regular basis.

It may be a bit hidden, but this lovely place is worth finding. Inside, you
will find a little shop with antiques, a flea market, and second hand
items you won’t find easily in Surinam. You will also find some unique
items on the clothes rack. Outside, you can sit back and relax while
enjoying a little refreshment, and watch all of the traffic pass you by.
During the evening you will find the older Suriname gentlemen stop
by to “talk tori” (the telling of stories/tales), while playing games and
enjoying a beverage. During the weekend, you’ll often find live music
around here.
Bar Zuid
The ‘hotspot in town’ which is located on the ever busier Van
Sommelsdijckstraat , which has been claiming its name to fame thanks
to her Burger Battles. You will be able to find a delicious freshly made
brick kiln pizza, or one of the very typical America grill dishes. On pretty
much a daily basis, the terrace will be packed until the late hours, and
you will be able to see and be seen. Since it is in the middle of the
nightlife center, this is one of the most visited places, where you will
be able to find a mixed audience consisting of expats, entrepreneurs,
interns and the Surinam middle- and upper class.

LITERATUUR SCHRIJVEN
De Schrijversvakschool Paramaribo is onlangs gestart met een training ANANSITORI-schrijven.Twintig jongeren
vanaf 16 jaar krijgen de kans een origineel Anansiverhaal te schrijven waarin deze mythische spin (zie kader voor
achtergrond van dit typisch Surinaamse sprookjesfiguur) wordt gepresenteerd als een positief, opbouwend en
bemiddelend figuur. Het Anansi-project wordt financieel ondersteund door de Nederlandse ambassade. Deze
training wordt verzorgd door Ruth San A Jong van de Schrijversvakschool in samenwerking met de National
Storytelling Academy.
Ruth San A Jong (1970) woont en werkt
in Suriname waar ze de oprichter, directeur en drijvende kracht is van de Schrijversvakschool Paramaribo.
“Ik heb vanaf mijn 24ste gepubliceerd
maar in 2007 werd ik ontdekt door de
auteur Astrid H. Roemer. ( Deze Surinaamse schrijfster won onlangs de zeer
prestigieuze P.C. Hooftprijs, een van de
belangrijkste literatuurprijzen in het Nederlands taalgebied red.)
In 2011 ben ik pas echt gedebuteerd met
een eigen verhalenbundel De laatste parade, mijn eerste geesteskindje. Daarvoor
heb ik ook gepubliceerd in verzamelbundels. Deze bundel heeft heel wat deuren voor mij opengedaan: ik ben genomineerd voor de Academica Literatuurprijs
in 2013 en voor de Inktaap literatuurprijs in 2014. Daarnaast
leverde dit boek mij een citybooks-reis op in Jakarta, Indonesië en ontmoetingen met auteurs en lezers. Schrijven en
literatuur zijn mijn passie. Ik wil dit mijn hele leven lang doen
en er ook mijn brood mee verdienen.”
Het schrijven van verhalen is voor San A Jong een eerste
levensbehoefte: een passie die zij graag wil overbrengen op
andere mensen die dezelfde drang hebben om hun verhalen
op een beeldende wijze op papier te zetten. En daar kan je volgens haar niet vroeg
genoeg mee beginnen.
Zo kwam enkele maanden geleden de publicatie uit ‘We schrijven ons eigen boek’.
Fictie van en voor kinderen in gedichten
en verhalen, een project van de Schrijversvakschool Paramaribo. Ook dit project werd financieel ondersteund door de
Nederlands ambassade. Het boekje is het
resultaat van een schrijftraining voor kinderen van 9 tot 14 jaar. In het boek staan
verrassende, en soms ontroerende verhalen die een helder beeld geven van de
leefwereld van deze Surinaamse kinderen.
Anansitori
Ruth heeft hoge verwachtingen van de training Anansitori
schrijven voor kinderen. “Elk Surinaams kind groeit op met
de verhalen van Anansi maar eigenlijk is deze spin niet echt
een rolmodel en zijn de verhalen vaak donker en sinister. Het
doel van dit project is om de kinderen vanuit hun eigen belevingswereld een eigen Anansiverhaal te laten schrijven met
een positieve inslag. De verhalen van de kinderen worden
gebundeld en verteld tijdens een literaire avond.”

“Hoewel creatief schrijven een kunstvorm is, is het vooral
een vak waarin elk genre zijn specifieke technieken of vormen heeft. Tegenwoordig kun je voor alle kunstdisciplines
waar interesse voor bestaat, een opleiding volgen. Men gaat
er gevoegelijk vanuit, dat wanneer je kunt schrijven je automatisch creatief kunt schrijven. Dat is vooral nièt het geval,
anders zouden alle Neerlandici schrijvers zijn. Het gaat bij
creatief schrijven om de creativiteit op schrift, woorden kiezen die zeggingskracht hebben, iets teweeg brengen bij de lezer, beelden en associaties oproepen en meer. We begeleiden
vooral bij het schrijfproces in de verschillende genres.”
De school bestaat sinds 2008 en heeft als voornaamste doel
het creatief en literatuur schrijven in Suriname te bevorderen. Dit doet zij door literaire programma’s en producten
te ontwikkelen. De school wil met haar vier jarige deeltijdopleiding een goed en kritisch fundament leggen voor het
kunstvakonderwijs en in het bijzonder voor het creatief en
literair schrijven.
“We verzorgen lessen in proza, poëzie, essay, scenario en toneelschrijven met haar specifieke schrijfvormen. Daarnaast
zijn er vakken die ondersteunend zijn aan de hoofdvakken.
De vakken variëren van Sranan (Surinaamse) spelling, Sranan
Poëzie, literaire tekstanalyse tot Surinamistiek. Kortom, alles
wat relevant is voor de opleiding, voor de ontwikkeling van
de schrijver. We hebben niet slechts één blik!”
De Schrijversvakschool financiert zichzelf uit de opbrengsten van lesgelden. “We krijgen bij onze projecten ook ondersteuning van de Nederlandse overheid, via de ambassade,
en andere sponsors. Alles hangt af van de projecten die we
doen.Vanuit de geschiedenis worden verhalen verteld en niet
opgeschreven. Suriname heeft een orale verteltraditie”, zegt
San A Jong. “De Schrijversvakschool maakt een symbiose van
die twee, schrijven en vertellen.Wie schrijft heeft immers iets
te vertellen.”
Anansi-Tori
Anansi is een mythische spin uit volksverhalen uit West-Afrika en
de Caraïben. Kenmerkend voor de Anansi-verhalen is dat Anansi
zijn tegenstanders steeds te slim af is.
‘Anansi’ is een woord uit de taal van de Ashanti dat ‘spin’ betekent. Door Afrikaanse slaven
werden de verhalen meegevoerd naar Amerika, waar de
verhalen deel gingen uitmaken van de cultuur van onder
andere Suriname, de Nederlandse Antillen en Jamaica.
In Suriname worden de verhalen over Anansi ‘Anansi-Tori’ genoemd
De hoofdpersoon van Anansi verhalen is een spin met menselijke karaktereigenschappen.Anansi kan via een gesponnen draad
van de aarde naar de hemel reizen en weer terug. Zo staat hij in
contact met God. Zo krijgen zijn verhalen extra wijsheid en een
goddelijke lading.
Anansi is heel slim en vindt zichzelf belangrijker dan anderen. En
bijna alles wat hij doet, doet hij voor zichzelf. Anansi weeft een
web van sluwe plannetjes om iets voor elkaar te krijgen. Soms
komt hij in lastige situaties terecht maar weet zich er vaak uit
te redden.
Anansi is het goede en het kwade in één. Hij is een hele ondeugende spin. Hij liegt en bedriegt, hij steelt en hij is lui, maar omdat hij daar ook voor uitkomt, is hij tegelijkertijd eerlijk, slim en
moedig. De held en de antiheld. Hij laat je denken over normen
en waarden.

RUTH SAN A JONG FROM
WRITERS’ SCHOOL PARAMARIBO ABOUT:
THE ART OF CREATIVE WRITING
AND LITERATURE
The Writers’ School Paramaribo recently started a course ANANSITORI-writing.Twenty youngsters, starting from
the age of 16, get the opportunity to write an original Anansi story in which this mythical spider (see framework
for background of this typical Surinamese fairy-tale figure) is presented as a positive, constructive and mediating
figure. The Anansi-project is financially supported by the Dutch embassy. This course is educated by Ruth San A
Jong from the writers’ school in cooperation with the National Storytelling Academy. Ruth A San Young (1970) lives
and works in Suriname and she is the founder, director and driving force behind the Writers’ School Paramaribo.
“From the age of 24, I’ve been publishing,
however, only in 2007 I was discovered by
author Astrid H. Roemer (this Surinamese
writer recently won the very prestigious
P.C. Hooftprijs, one of the most important
literature awards in the Dutch language).
It was not until 2011 that I really made my
debut with an own bundle The Last Parade,
my first brainchild. Before that I also published in collected works. This bundle has
opened many doors for me: I was nominated for the Academica Literature award in
2013 and for the Inktaap Literature award
in 2014. In addition, this book provided me
with a city books-trip to Jakarta, Indonesia
and meetings with authors and readers.
Writing and literature are my passion. I want to do this the rest
of my entire life and make a living with it.”
Writing stories is a primary need in life for San A Jong: a passion that she would love to convey to other people who have
the same urge to put their stories on paper in a visual way. And,
according to her, no one is too young to start this.
A few months ago ‘We write our own book’ was published. Fiction from and for children in forms of poems and stories, a pro-
ject of the writers’ school Paramaribo. This
project, too, was financially supported by the
Dutch embassy. The booklet is a result of
a writing course for children between the
ages of 9 and 14. The book offers surprising
and sometimes touching stories that provide a clear image of the living environment
of these Surinamese children.

Ruth expects a lot from the course Anansitori writing for children. “All Surinamese
children grow up with Ananasi’s stories, but
this spider is actually never a role model
and the stories are often dark and sinister.
The purpose of this project is to let these
children write their own Anansi story with a positive twist and
from their experience. The children’s stories are bundled and
told during a literary evening.”
“Although creative writing is a form of art, it is mostly a profession in which every type has its special techniques and forms.
Nowadays you can be educated in all disciplines you are interested in. The assumption is that if you can write, you can automatically write creatively. This is definitely not the case, or else
all Dutch masters in literature would be writers. Creative writing

is about creativity on paper, choosing words that are expressive,
that can create movement with the reader, that evoke images
and associations and more. We mainly guide in the writing process in the different genres.”
De school started in 2008 and the primary purpose is promoting creative and literature writing in Suriname. This is achieved
by developing many literary programs and products. The school
wants to create a good and critical foundation for the arts education and more specifically for creative and literature writing
with her four year during part-time course.
“We offer classes in prose, poetry, essay, screenwriter and play
writing with their specific writing forms. Besides there are classes that support the main subjects. The classes vary from Sranan (Surinamese) grammar, Sranan Poetry, literary text analysis
to Surinamese Studies. In short, everything that is relevant to
the course, for the development of the writer. We don’t just have
one perception!”
The writers’ school is financed by proceeds from tuition fees.
“The Dutch government also supports us with projects, through
the embassy and other sponsors. Everything depends on the
projects we do. Since the old days, stories are being told, but not
written down. Suriname knows an oral storytelling tradition,”
San A Jong says. “The writers’ school is a symbiosis of the two,
writing and telling. After all, who writes has something to tell.”

Anansi-Tori
Anansi is a mythical spider from folktales from West Africa
and the Caribbean. A characteristic of the Anansi stories is
that Anansi always outwits his opponents.
‘Anansi’ is a word that comes from the Ashanti language that
means ‘spider’. The stories were brought to America by the
African slaves, where the stories became part of the culture
of including Suriname, the Dutch Antilles and Jamaica.
In Suriname, the stories about Anansi are called ‘Anansi-Tori’.
The protagonist of Anansi tales is a spider with human characteristics. Anansi can travel to heaven and back through a
spun cobweb. This is how he is connected to God. This way,
his stories get extra wisdom and a religious touch.
Anansi is very smart and he thinks he is more important
than others. And mostly anything he does, he does for
himself. Anansi weaves a web of Machiavellian plans to get
things done. He sometimes ends up in difficult situations but
always manages to get himself out of it again.

Het begon allemaal zes jaar geleden. Mirjam Marks
en Daphne Bruijne merkten op dat er voor de kids
niet veel educatiefs te doen was in Suriname. Verschillende ideeën werden door het stel geopperd.
Uiteindelijk dachten ze, waarom niet een kindermuseum zoals het Tropenmuseum Junior in Amsterdam (TMJ)? “Er werd contact gemaakt met het
Tropenmuseum. Die hadden gelukkig nog materiaal
van de interactieve tentoonstelling ‘Paleisgeheimen’,
over de Ashanti in Ghana,” vertelt inhoudelijk directeur Dakaya Lenz trots. Haar enthousiasme over de
start is nog altijd merkbaar.“Na het contact metTMJ,
werd het idee uitgeschreven en besproken met de
Nederlandse Ambassade. Die vond het een zeer boeiend idee en wilde
meteen in zee voor een periode van drie jaar.We gingen ook langs het
toenmalig Ministerie van Onderwijs, om toestemming te krijgen zodat
schoolkinderen tijdens schooltijd het museum kunnen bezoeken. We
regelden de huur en op 27 november 2009 werd officieel onze poort
geopend.”
It all started six years ago. Mirjam Marks and
Daphne Bruijne found that there weren’t many
educational things to do for the kids in Suriname.
Various ideas were suggested by the two. Finally they
thought, why not a fun museum for children, like the
Tropenmuseum Junior in Amsterdam (TMJ)? “We
got in touch with the Tropenmuseum. Fortunately
they still had some materials from the interactive
exhibition ‘Secrets of the Palace’ about the Ashanti in
Ghana,” curriculum director Dakaya Lenz says with
pride. Her enthusiasm about the start is still noticeable. “After getting in touch with TMJ, the idea was
developed and discussed with the Dutch Embassy.
They thought it a very interesting idea, and immediately signed up for
a three-year cooperation period. We also went to the former Ministry
of Education, to get permission for the school children to visit the museum during school hours. We arranged the rent, and on November
27, 2009, we officially opened.”

Children’s museum Villa Zapakara, or the mansion where children discover the world while playing, offers interactive exhibitions
about cultures. Their imagination and talents are sparked, with
the aim of improving their general knowledge. Villa Zapakara
aims to become a permanent fixture in the arts & culture on
offer in Surinamese society. “But to achieve this objective is a
current struggle. That’s because we depend on our sponsors. This
means Villa Zapakara constantly finds itself an uncertain situation,” Lenz explains. “Although we’ve been fully booked from
the start of the year by schools, and open on Saturdays to the
general public, we don’t want to raise the educational fee of SRD
2.50 to participate in the activities, but it appears this will be
needed after six years with our upcoming exhibition. Our goal

scholen en op de zaterdag open zijn voor het ander publiek, willen
we de educatieve bijdrage voor deelname aan de activiteiten van SRD
2,50 niet verhogen, maar dit zal na zes jaar wel moeten bij onze nieuwe

Zapakara heeft een opmerkelijke manier van omgaan met kinderen.
Het team is open en kindvriendelijk en creëert daardoor een speciale
band met de kinderen. Daarnaast is het beleid, de planning en de begroting transparant.
In maart 2016 begint de nieuwe tentoonstelling. Lenz:“Die zijn we nu
aan het bouwen. Gelukkig zijn er sponsoren als de SLM die ons ondersteunen hierin. De tentoonstelling ‘Mix Max Brasil’ is binnenkort een
feit.” Waar doen ze het voor? “Bij alle kinderen de directe blijdschap en
dankbaarheid op hun gezichten waarnemen, is meer dan genoeg om
hiermee verder te gaan.”
Met de kids een educatieve ervaring opdoen tijdens de vakantie in Suriname? Bezoek dan Villa Zapakara vanaf 14 maart 2016 elke zaterdag
van 09:00 uur tot 15:30 uur. De Mix Max Brasil tour is dan steeds om
11:30 uur of op aanvraag als je met minimaal 15 personen bent. De
workshops zijn steeds op vaste tijden om 09:15 uur, 10:30 uur en om
13:15 uur.

De republiek Trinidad & Tobago ligt in de Caribische zee, pal voor de
kust van Venezuela, waar de twee eilanden in 1498 werden ontdekt
door Christoffel Columbus. De eilanden zijn door de eeuwen heen in
diverse handen geweest.Trinidad was tot 1797 Spaans grondgebied en
het kleinere Tobago werd na een Britse, Franse en Nederlandse bezetting in 1889 uiteindelijk weer Brits grondgebied, samen met Trinidad.
Trinidad & Tobago werden in 1962 onafhankelijk en de twee eilanden
vormen vanaf 1976 de republiek ‘Trinidad & Tobago’.
Er heerst een heerlijk tropisch klimaat. Het droge seizoen loopt van
januari tot juni en het regenseizoen van juni tot januari. De bevolking is,
net als in Suriname, een echte mengelmoes waarbij de grootste groepering afstamt van Afrikaanse slaven. Ondanks dat Trinidad & Tobago
voor de kust van Zuid-Amerika ligt, waar de voertaal Spaans is, is de
officiële voertaal van Trinidad & Tobago het Engels. Het meest zult u
echter het Engels-Creools en het Hindi horen dat door de Hindoestanen wordt gesproken.
Trinidad & Tobago is beroemd om haar carnaval dat in 2016 wordt
gehouden op 8 en 9 februari. Op Trinidad & Tobago wordt het hele jaar
door wel iets gevierd maar het jaarlijkse carnaval vormt het hoogtepunt. Gaat u speciaal voor het carnaval naar Trinidad zorg dan dat u een
week eerder arriveert zodat u de opmaat naar dit grootse carnavalsfeest volop kunt meebeleven.
Zowel het eiland Trinidad als het veel kleinere Tobago zijn prachtige,
groene eilanden met een schitterende flora en fauna. Het is voor vogelspotters een eldorado door de ruim 400 vogelsoorten die hier rond
fladderen waarvan vele soorten inheems zijn. En wat te denken van
ruim 600 vlindersoorten. Op Trinidad & Tobago kunt u genieten van
ongerepte natuur, groene bergen, de zee met haar prachtige stranden
en een indrukwekkend regenwoud. Het zijn eilanden waar natuurliefhebbers echt hun hart kunnen ophalen.
Maar er is ook volop vertier. Neem een heerlijke duik in de woeste
golven van de zee bij Maracas Bay en vergeet vooral niet om de lokale
snack bij een van de strandtentjes te bestellen: een broodje gebakken
haai met de naam Bake & Shark.
Voor het bruisende uitgaansleven in het weekend kunt u terecht in de
vele bars en lounges op Ariapita Avenu in Port of Spain. In Port of Spain
wemelt het van kleine, knusse winkeltjes, markten en straatverkopers
maar u kunt er ook heerlijk modern shoppen in de net buiten Port of
Spain gelegen Trincity Mall. Met een taxi bent u er zo.
Taxi’s herkent u trouwens niet aan een geel taxibord maar aan de letter
H in de nummerplaat. Nog leuker is het huren van een auto waardoor
u niet alleen makkelijker maar ook sneller het eiland kunt verkennen.

Cultureel gezien is er ook veel te zien zoals het hooggelegen Fort
George, een verdedigingsfort uit 1804 met talloze kanonnen dat

indrukwekkend maar ook het uitzicht over Port of Spain dat u van
hieruit heeft is adembenemend. In Port of Spain mag een bezoek aan de
Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception eigenlijk niet ontbreken.
Deze prachtige basiliek werd gebouwd tussen 1816 en 1851. Een
aanrader is ook een wandeling te maken door het Queen’s Park
Savannah, een mooi groen stadspark. Niet alleen om het park maar
vooral om de zeven koloniale gebouwen aan de rand van het park, ook
wel de Magnificent Seven genoemd, die rond 1900 werden gebouwd.
Door grondige restauratie staan de meeste er nu weer in nieuwstaat
bij en kunt u zich vergapen aan de prachtige architectuur uit het begin
van de vorige eeuw.

THE TRUE CARIBBEAN
The republic Trinidad & Tobago is located in the Caribbean Sea
in front of the coast of Venezuela where the two islands were
discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The islands have
been possessed by several countries over the centuries. Trinidad
was Spanish territory until 1797 and the small Tobago, after a
British, French and Dutch occupation eventually became British
territory again together with Trinidad in 1889. Trinidad & Tobago

There is a delightful tropical climate. The dry season runs from
January to June and the rain season from June to January. The
population is, as in Suriname, a real mishmash with the largest
grouping descended from African slaves. Although Trinidad & Tobago is located along the coast of South America, where the official language is Spanish, the official language of Trinidad & Tobago
is English. However, you will mostly hear English-Creole and Hindi
that is spoken by the Hindus.
Trinidad & Tobago is famous for its carnival held on 8 and 9 February in 2016. There is always something to celebrate in Trinidad
& Tobago throughout the year, but the annual carnival is the highlight. Are you especially going to Trinidad for the Carnival? Make

prelude to this grand carnival party.
Both the island of Trinidad as well as the much smaller Tobago are
beautiful green islands with wonderful nature. It is paradise for
