Saint Gregory Palamas: Knowing God vs. Knowing about God
On the Second Sunday of Great and Holy Lent we commemorate Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of
Thessalonika. Why was St. Gregory chosen by our Church in the year 1368 to represent the Second Sunday of
Lent — which this year falls on March 27th?
Saint Gregory illuminated the differences between God’s Essence and his Energies; in other words, the very
core of His Being, versus His revealed actions by which we know Him and participate in His Grace.
The point is this: Saint Gregory stands as a Lenten reminder of our sacred opportunity to get to know
the Unknowable! There is a difference between knowing about God, and knowing God. There are in fact a
great many people who know an awful lot about God, but who don’t truly know Him.
Let us use an earthly example to illustrate this heavenly reality. Let’s say I wanted to get to know one of my
favorite actors, Tom Hanks. Due to his celebrity and inaccessibility, it would be extremely difficult for me to
interact with him personally.
So I may go about it in a different way. I could read about him – books, magazines, tabloids, the internet. I
could watch all his movies and talk to his friends and acquaintances...I could even talk with his Greek Orthodox priest in California who was a classmate of mine at Holy Cross! I could in effect, become an “expert” on
the life of Tom Hanks, but I still wouldn’t truly know him.
The same is certainly true for our efforts to know God. We can read tons of good books, even the Bible, to
learn more about God and His teachings. We can go to Bible Studies every week, carefully follow every word
of a priest’s sermon, and listen to wonderful podcasts on the internet that explain our faith. These are wonderful resources that we should take advantage of to grow spiritually.
But according to St. Gregory Palamas: that may be enough for knowing about God, but not enough to know
God Himself on a very personal and intimate level.
To know God on this level, we must rise above our daily routines, and enter into a consistent routine of private
and corporate prayer – not just saying a prayer now and then but rather getting serious about prayer and developing a life of prayer.
This begins with a daily routine of spending quiet time with God. This is a time set apart each day (early in
the morning, late in the evening, or even waking up in the middle of the night at 3AM) to be still and pray to
God. We can say our prayers from a prayer book, repeat the Jesus Prayer, pray from the Psalms, or just be still
in God’s presence, removing every worldly thought from our mind and focusing on nothing but God – repeating the holy name of Jesus Christ with our lips or within our heart.
During Lent, we have many more opportunities – in addition to the Divine Liturgy – to get to know God on a
deeper level: Great Compline, Presanctified Liturgy, Salutations, and Great Vespers
On the Second Sunday of Lent, the Church is giving us St. Gregory Palamas, to remind us that there is a striking difference between knowing God and merely knowing about Him. This is not theoretical and abstract
knowledge of a faraway God. By implementing a systematic routine of hesychia and prayer in our daily lives,
we will come to know the eternal God of the universe in a strikingly personal and intimate way.

Saturday of Souls Liturgy
During the Triodion observance, which is the period of
the Church Year leading to the Easter Celebration,
three Saturdays are set aside as a special time for the
remembrance of all departed Orthodox Christians
asleep in the Lord. These memorials have their basis
in Holy Scripture: “A holy and wholesome thought to
pray for the dead, that they might be delivered from
sin.” (II Maccabees 12:45)
Why was Saturday designated as the day of
souls? Alexander Schmemann, in his book on Great
Lent says that “Saturday is unique in that it is a
day of feast and a day of death. It is a feast
because in this world and in human time Christ
overcame death and inaugurated His Kingdom.
Because of His incarnation, death and Resurrection
are the fulfillment of Creation in which God rejoiced at
the beginning. It is a day of death because in Christ’s
death the world died, and its salvation, fulfillment and
transfiguration are beyond the grave in the age to
come”
Let us remember and pray for our deceased
family members and friends
Space is provided below for the names of those
relatives and friends whom you may wish to
remember during the three Saturdays of the Souls.
Please print their first names only, and mail or bring
the list to the Church Office.

Lenten Psalm Readings
Would you like to Join the Lenten Psalm Reading Group?
Twenty volunteers are needed to form a Lenten discipline of reading the Psalms throughout lent (March 14—April
22). The schedule below indicates that each person will read a designated section of the Psalms each day. For
example, on March 14, Person A will read Psalms 1-8. On March 15, that same person will read Psalms 9-17, and
so forth on a rotating basis. Thus collectively the Psalter will be read in its entirety by the group each day during
lent. In addition to the Psalm reading, members of the group are asked to intercede and pray for all the readers.
For more information, please call Fr. Alexander Goussetis at the Church or email at [email protected]
