Deze agenda is een publicatie van het
Studium Generale, onderdeel van het
Studenten Service Centrum van de
Universiteit Maastricht. Ze biedt een
overzicht van het programma van activiteiten
op het gebied van brede wetenschappelijke,
maatschappelijke en culturele vorming.
Het bestaat uit lezingen, debatten, collegereeksen en filmvertoningen. Deze agenda is
chronologisch opgesteld met uitzondering
van de collegereeksen.

TEN GELEIDE / EDITORIAL
Jonathan Holslag, schrijver en docent
internationale politiek aan de Vrije
Universiteit Brussel, vraagt zich in een
opiniebijdrage aan het NRC Handelsblad
van 26 oktober jl. af hoe het komt dat
Europeanen met zo weinig overtuiging
de eigen Westerse waarden uitdragen.
Hij constateert een enorme luiheid in de
hoofden van de mensen. Wie staat er nog
bij stil dat gelijkheid, solidariteit, vrijheid,
vrede en democratie dankzij veel strijd
door onze ouders en voorouders tot stand
zijn gekomen? Vroeger zorgde religie
ervoor dat we regelmatig uit de waan van
de dag stapten. Nu ze uit ons bestaan is
verdwenen, is er een leegte ontstaan die
niet meer wordt opgevuld. In zo’n moreel
braakland is het makkelijk haat zaaien.
Hoog tijd om in onze samenleving ruimte
te creëren zodat stil kan worden gestaan
bij de dingen die er écht toe doen. Met
kennis van de geschiedenis, plaats voor
filosofie, levensbeschouwing en zingeving. Bijvoorbeeld elke dag het onderwijs
laten beginnen met een eerbetoon aan
onze kernwaarden.
De hierboven geschetste zorgen zullen
ongetwijfeld op begrip kunnen rekenen
van het Studium Generale publiek. De
zoveelste preek voor eigen parochie. Hoe
de niet-gelovigen te bereiken? Een erg
lastige kwestie. We kunnen ons echter
gelukkig prijzen met de aanwezigheid van
duizenden buitenlandse studenten aan
deze universiteit. Met hun verschillen in
culturele achtergronden brengen ze een
hoop nieuwe ideeën binnen. Samen met
hen wil het SG een bijdrage leveren aan
een dynamische intellectuele en culturele leefomgeving in deze stad waarin
openheid, vrijheid van meningsuiting en
debatcultuur belangrijk zijn. Wij programmeren ons eerbetoon aan onze kernwaarden meestal aan het einde van de
onderwijsdag. Be there!

In a column in the NRC Handelsblad
of 26 October, Jonathan Holslag,
author and professor of international
politics at the Free University of Brussels,
wonders why it is that Europeans express
their own Western values with so little
conviction. He observes that there is
a great deal of laziness in people’s
minds. Who still gives a thought to the
fact that equality, solidarity, freedom,
peace and democracy only came about
through a great struggle on the part of
our parents and ancestors? In the past,
religion provided a regular opportunity
for reflection, but now it has disappeared
from our lives there is a void that can
no longer be filled. In such a moral
wasteland, it is easy to sow hatred.
High time that space was created in
our society for contemplating the things
that really matter - with a knowledge of
history and a place for philosophy and
reflecting on the meaning of life. For
example, we could start our education
every day with a tribute to our core
values.
The concerns outlined above will
undoubtedly be able to count on the
understanding of the Studium Generale
public. The umpteenth sermon to the
converted. But how do we reach the nonbelievers? This is a very tricky question.
We are, however, fortunate in having
thousands of foreign students at this
university, who bring in many new ideas
through their differences in cultural
background. Along with them, SG wants
to contribute to a dynamic intellectual
and cultural environment in this city, in
which openness, freedom of speech and a
debating culture are important elements.
We usually programme our tribute to our
core values at the end of the academic
day. Be there!

In 2016 organiseert Het Noordbrabants
Museum een grote tentoonstelling ter
gelegenheid van de 500ste sterfdag
van de middeleeuwse schilder Jheronimus Bosch. De film volgt het team van
Bosch-experts dat, met het oog op deze
tentoonstelling, het mysterie van alle 25
nog bestaande schilderijen van Bosch
probeert te ontrafelen. Vier jaar lang
reisde het team de wereld over om zijn
schilderijen in musea als Museo Nacional
del Prado en Musée du Louvre met röntgenfotografie en infraroodtechnieken in
detail te onderzoeken. Voor het eerst in
de geschiedenis krijgen we de kans door
te dringen tot de onderste verflagen om
zo een indruk te krijgen van het creatieve
proces van de ‘duivelskunstenaar’.

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain we have
left the bipolar world behind us. We are facing an interim period that could last quite
a long time. A transparent and predictable
international order - as we know and prefer
it - is being put into perspective. Globalisation is testing the concept of borders as
a line of defence of our way of life, while
putting the issue of people’s dignity on the
agenda. And there is much greater competition behind the EU external borders
among governance systems and sets of values. Tonight, Štefan Füle will show us that
too often the EU has failed to act because
we were not sure about the consequences.
He will also tell us how to turn challenges
into opportunities.

Met zijn algemene relativiteitstheorie
bracht Einstein ruimte en tijd, materie,
energie en gravitatie tot één sluitend
geheel. De theorie onthult een prachtige
symmetrie in de natuur: de verdeling van
massa en energie bepaalt de vorm van de
ruimte-tijd, en de vorm van de ruimte-tijd
bepaalt hoe massa en energie zich bewegen en verdelen in de ruimte. Toen Einstein
zijn theorie eind 1915 voltooide, legde hij
daarmee het fundament waarop heel de
moderne kosmologie steunt. In deze reeks
wordt een elementaire uiteenzetting van de
relativiteitstheorie geboden, zowel de speciale theorie die Einstein in 1905 opstelde,
als de algemene die tien jaar later klaar

was. De natuurkundige context waarin de
relativiteitstheorie tot stand kwam, wordt
belicht als een noodzakelijke voorwaarde
voor een juist begrip ervan. De nadruk ligt
op het verwerven van fysisch inzicht door
middel van grafische presentaties, eerder
dan op een uitgewerkte mathematische
formulering.

The Neuroscience
of Memory

Roman senator Marcus Cicero used a
mental ‘memory palace’ to memorise the
details and discourse of his hour-long
public speeches. In the 1950s, Henry
Molaison underwent experimental brain
surgery to remove the hippocampus and
related structures in an attempt to alleviate severe epileptic seizures. While
the treatment was successful, it left him
with a severe side-effect: he was not able
to form new memories. In 2014, three
prominent neuroscientists received the
Nobel Prize for their work on the brain’s
navigational system that includes the
hippocampus.
These three ‘stories’ are related to how
the brain forms, stores and retrieves
memories. Neuroscience studies in
recent decades have converged on a

view of memory in the brain that centres
on the hippocampus, a structure located
deep within the brain, and its communication with many other parts of the brain.
How are these stories interconnected?
What does a neuroscience perspective of
memory add to our understanding and
appreciation of human memory? And how
does it address more applied or societal
questions about memory?
In this series, Van de Ven discusses these
and other questions related to the neuroscience of memory formation. He will
also show some of the frontline scientific
paradigms that are currently used not
only to locate memories in the brain, but
also to manipulate them in order to enhance desired memories, erase unwanted
memories or possibly create new ones.

De 100e verjaar- Dada: The Revolt
dag van Dadaïsme of Art

De kunststroming Dada springt in 1916
als een pierlala uit een doosje om een
paar jaar later, zo rond 1924, weer even
plotseling te verdwijnen. Ze is het absurde
antwoord op de absurditeit van de oorlog,
een bijtende satire op de zelfingenomenheid van de burgerij, een lachspiegel
waarin de lachwekkende ‘rationaliteit’
van de ‘beschaving’ wordt gespiegeld en
daarbij de gedaante aanneemt van een
Medusa die met haar blik de toeschouwer
van schrik doet verstenen. Dada is de nar
die met grappen en grollen, maar bitter en
wanhopig gestemd, een cultuur geselt die
in leugens en schijn verstrikt is geraakt.

Dada or Dadaism was an art movement
of the European avant-garde in the early
20th century. Dada is the absurd answer
to the absurdity of war, a biting satire on
the complacency of the bourgeoisie, a
distorting mirror in which the laughable
“rationality” of “civilization” is mirrored and
then assuming the form of a Medusa who
with her look of terror petrifies spectators.
Dada is, in short, the jester with jokes
but in a bitter and desperate mood true a
culture that scourges itself in lies and false
pretention.
Dada is elusive, paradoxical, absurd,
surrounded by myths and hilarious stories.
Dada had a great influence: both the CoBrA
movement as Provo may call himself heir

anniversary of the Dada movement. The
concert involves the presentation of three
iconic Dadaist films, accompanied by
Kevin Toma (piano & electronics).

Neutrinos are beyond doubt the weirdest
particle we know. Present in abundance,
63,000,000,000 of them pass through
your fingernail every second, but they are
almost impossible to detect. Their existence was hypothesised in 1930 but they
were only discovered in 1956. And since
1998, we know that neutrinos can spontaneously change identity, a discovery that
was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize.
Done now? No! We do not know neutrino
masses and neither do we know whether
or not the neutrino is its own anti-particle.
We enjoy studying the huge neutrino flux
that accompanies a supernova explosion
and we wonder how to observe the primordial neutrinos that began freely streaming through our universe approximately
one second after the Big Bang!

Humanity is changing planet Earth so fundamentally that a new chapter in natural
history is beginning: the “Anthropocene”.
This is a new geological epoch that begins
when human activities started to have a
significant global impact on Earth’s ecosystems. It is now capturing the attention
of policy-makers, philosophers, environmentalists, economists, artists and many
others. What is the essence of this bold
new idea? Is the Anthropocene the sum of
all environmental havoc or an opportunity
for change? What would this mean for our
ways of life? And how relevant is the Anthropocene to the global conservation of
biodiversity?
Part of the colloquium Experts and the
Global Environment in the 20th Century
organised as part of the NWO-funded
project “Nature’s Diplomats”.

Sjeng Kremers staat in deze lezing achtereenvolgens stil bij de sluiting van de mijnen
en wat daaraan vooraf ging, de gevolgen die
deze sluiting had voor de Zuid-Limburgse
samenleving, het proces van herstructurering en de rol daarin van de rijksoverheid,
het provinciaal bestuur en zijn eigen rol.
Vervolgens komt de vraag aan de orde hoe
Zuid-Limburg (met name de Oostelijke en
Westelijke Mijnstreek en Maastricht en omstreken) eruitzag na de herstructurering en
welke lessen uit dit herstructureringsproces
te trekken zijn.

October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul
Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the
Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish
prisoners isolated from the camp and
forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While
working in one of the crematoriums, Saul
discovers the corpse of a boy he takes for
his son. As the Sonderkommando plans
a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an
impossible task: save the child’s body
from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the
mourner’s Kaddish and give the boy a
proper burial.
This film is programmed as part of the
International Holocaust Remembrance
Day, which will be held on January 27,
2016. The day was designated by the
United Nations General Assembly
Resolution on November 1, 2005.

Tegenwoordig is het boeddhisme zeer
populair. Men stelt zelfs dat het de derde
religie, of levensbeschouwing van Nederland is. In allerlei steden zijn cursussen
mindfulness en de Dalai Lama trekt volle
zalen. In tuincentra staan de Boeddha
beelden. Talloze mensen doen aan zen
of mediteren op andere manieren. Kom
je in Azië, dan is dit vaak heel anders. In
Azië mediteert zelfs onder de monniken
maar een minderheid. Bovendien blijkt
het boeddhisme in Azië ook nog eens helemaal geen eenheid te zijn, er zijn talloze
scholen en denkrichtingen. Welk beeld
ontstaat er nu van het boeddhisme als we
Azië en het westen met elkaar vergelijken?
Is het boeddhisme zoals het zich in het
westen ontwikkelt eigenlijk wel zo Aziatisch of spelen er andere factoren een rol?

Misha Beliën onderzocht met deze documentaire hoe boeddhistisch het boeddhisme in Nederland is. Urenlang bewegingloos stilzitten, niet iets dat typisch
binnen de Nederlandse cultuur past. Toch
is zenmeditatie helemaal ‘hot’. Met name
de boeddhistische leerschool Zen.nl is in
Nederland populair, een leerschool naar
Japanse traditie die in de jaren ’90 werd
opgericht door zenmeester Rients Ritskes.
Binnen deze school vindt het boeddhisme
een nieuwe vorm die steeds meer leerlingen aantrekt. Tegelijkertijd is er ook
kritiek. De methode die centraal staat is
aangepast aan de westerse manier van leven en denken: zo heeft de training direct

Some believe that ‘carnival’ is derived from
carne vale: Latin for ‘farewell to flesh’. The
feast of carnival indeed anticipates the start
of Lent, the period of solemn observance in
many Christian denominations that begins
on Ash Wednesday. Lasting from Sunday
morning till Tuesday midnight, Maastricht
is, in local parlance, “one big pub”. Unlike
other southern Dutch cities, Maastricht carnival is renowned for its street celebrations.
Fancifully dressed people - locals and visitors alike - sing, dance and talk nonsense at
every street corner of the old town. Based
on his long and intense experience, Van
Iterson invites us to look at the grotesque
character of Maastricht carnival. He will
also address the dos and don’ts of these
three days of folly.

van Duitsland opgeschrikt door een
aantal onverklaarbare gebeurtenissen.
Een kabel wordt gespannen om de dokter
met zijn paard ten val te brengen, een
schuur vliegt in brand en twee kinderen
worden ontvoerd en gemarteld. Wat is er
toch aan de hand in deze ogenschijnlijk
zo ordentelijke gemeenschap? Met Das
Weisse Band, geschoten in prachtig
zwart-wit, onderzoekt Michael Haneke
de gevolgen van een algemeen geldende
repressieve moraal. Winnaar van de
Gouden Palm voor beste film in 2009.

Economic globalisation is the increasing
economic integration and interdependence of national, regional and local
economies across the world through an
intensification of cross-border movement of goods, services, technologies and
capital. It results in new opportunities for

industrialised nations, as well as developing countries. This has led to both positive
and negative effects. Developments in ICT,
transport and communications, increasing capital mobility, the growth of global
credit markets, the increase of free trade
following the collapse of communism and
the growth of multinational companies,
and the rise in the significance of global
brands have increased the pace of globalisation over the past 30 years. What it often
comes down to is free trade vs. regulations
and the results for the have and have-nots.
In this series we look at these developments and try to find out who benefits

Ever since the mid-20th century, when
modernist utopia went to Latin America to
die, the continent has been a testing ground
for radical ideas about city-making. Here, in
the most urbanised continent on the planet,
extreme cities have bred extreme conditions, from vast housing estates to sprawling
slums. But after decades of political and
architectural failure, a new generation
has returned to the problems of the city
to address poverty and inequality. This is
a generation of activists, pragmatists and
social idealists. Tonight, McGuirk will
show us this generation and their ideas.
Een verstoorde ontwikkeling van de
hersenen in de foetale fase speelt een
belangrijke rol bij het ontstaan van ontwikkelingsaandoeningen zoals een autismespectrumstoornis (ASS). Verschillende
genetische risicofactoren zijn hiervoor
bekend die een verandering in de communicatie tussen zenuwcellen verstoren
met gevolgen voor sociale en cognitieve
eigenschappen. Genetische factoren verklaren maar 60% van het ontstaan van
ASS. Ongezonde omgevingsfactoren tijdens
de hersenontwikkeling verhogen eveneens
het risico op ASS. De vroege hersenontwikkeling wordt tevens indirect bestudeerd op
grond van functies en processen die vanaf
de geboorte aanwezig zijn, zoals sociale
aandacht en sociaal leervermogen. Recent
onderzoek toont aan dat deze functies en
processen bij baby’s met een verhoogd
risico op ASS zich niet of trager ontwikkelen en een hoop problemen veroorzaken.
Münninghoff is op 13 april 1944 geboren
in Posen, te midden van bombardementen
die het einde der tijden leken aan te kondigen. Vanuit Posen had Hitler-Duitsland
zijn Heerestruppen naar de Sovjet-Unie
gestuurd. Nu kreeg ze de verminkten, de
doden en een onafzienbare stoet vluchtelingen terug. Zijn familie had deel aan dat
drama. Over hen en over de gevolgen van de
oorlog gaat het vanavond. Over een grootvader, die op spectaculaire wijze een van de
rijkste mensen van Letland was geworden,
maar voordat de oorlog uitbrak met zijn
Russische vrouw en vier kinderen moest
vluchten naar Nederland. Over een vader,
die aan het Oostfront uit idealisme tegen de
Sovjets vocht en vervolgens in Nederland
ten onder ging. Over een moeder, die na de
scheiding naar Duitsland vluchtte en zijn
moeder niet mocht zijn. En over Münninghof
zelf, de kleinzoon, de zoon, de stamhouder.
Voor de roman De stamhouder ontving
Münninghoff in oktober 2015 de Libris
Geschiedenis prijs.
Vleesjunk en presentator van Keuringsdienst van Waarde Marijn Frank, probeert
van haar verslaving aan vlees af te komen
met een stage bij een koeienslachterij en
een bezoek aan 100.000 plofkippen. Door
haar biefstukje recht in de ogen te kijken
hoopt ze een gezondere morele relatie
op te bouwen met het lapje vlees op haar
bord. Dat blijkt nog een hele emotionele,
soms komisch-erotische tour, waarin ze
wordt bijgestaan door een psycholoog.
Terwijl Marijn dapper vordert langs de
slachtlijn, vindt ze antwoorden op haar
vragen bij onder andere vleesfokkers en
-kwekers, geheelonthouders en een wel
heel appetijtelijke chef-kok. Over beeldvorming, diervriendelijkheid, lust en
hypocrisie.

gentleman-filosoof denkt hierin na over
het goede leven en probeert koortsachtig
inzicht te krijgen in zijn eigen bestaan. Hij
grijpt daarbij terug naar filosofen uit de
Oudheid - stoïcijnen, sceptici, epicuristen
- voor wie filosofie altijd meer was dan
een theorie. Want moedig en waarachtig
leven, dat wilde De Montaigne. Alexander
Roose is auteur van De vrolijke wijsheid.
