The campus of the University of Twente is an
important location for the performing arts.
Not only in the Vrijhof, but also in the Open Air
theatre and even on the O&O square.
Here students and external parties perform, give
lectures, concerts, cabaret performances, dances,
expositions and workshops.
The Vrijhof is also where Apollo is based, the
umbrella organization of the performing arts. In this
semester booklet, all events of the second semester
are listed, from February 2016 to August 2016,
sorted by theme.

Antigone Unplugged - Theatergroep Aluin
Deze tragedie van Sofokles gaat over een jonge vrouw die net zo
eigengereid is als haar vader, de inmiddels afgezette koning Oidipous.
Ze wil zich niet neer leggen bij het gezag van haar oom en voogd,
Kreon, de nieuwe koning. Antigone Unplugged is na Oidipous en
Medea alweer de derde unplugged-voorstelling van Theatergroep
Aluin. Zonder decor maar met de kracht van de tekst en het spel.

BOT, Over onaardige mensen - Firma MES

Daan botst op tegen een meisje in de trein. Een woordenwisseling
volgt, een kale man bemoeit zich ermee, een middelvinger wordt
opgestoken. Aan de hand van deze ogenschijnlijk onbelangrijke
herinnering van één van de acteurs, zoekt Firma MES een antwoord
op de vraag waar onaardig gedrag vandaan komt. Ze pluizen het
voorval tot in detail uit. Een spannende, humoristische mix tussen
theater en realiteit. Met: Daan van Dijsseldonk, Roos Eijmers en
Lindertje Mans.

Theatersportvoorstelling Beginnersgroep - TSV Pro Deo
[NL]: When this is added to the title of a performance,
understanding Dutch is recommended when visiting.
In een theatersportvoorstelling worden alle scènes op het toneel
voor je neus geïmproviseerd. Twee teams van elk vier theatersporters
spelen om de beurt en zo goed mogelijke scène.
Jij, als publiek geeft de suggesties waarover deze scènes gaan.
Strenge rechters zien toe en kennen de teams punten toe.
Probeer de scène eens naar je hand te zetten door een gek voorwerp
of spannende locatie te suggereren! Of de theatersporters ermee
doen wat je verwacht... dat zullen we zien!

Amsterdams Kleinkunst Festival
Halve finalisten tournee 2016
Laat jij je graag verrassen? Heb je zin in iets nieuws? Dan
mag je deze theateravond niet missen! Nieuwe talentvolle
cabaretiers/kleinkunstenaars bereiden zich voor op de strijd
om de Wim Sonneveldprijs. Vanavond ben je getuige van 3
durfmokkels of lefgozers die elk een half uur uit hun cabaret- of
kleinkunstprogramma spelen. Wie je te zien krijgt en wat ze gaan
doen is voor iedereen een verrassing. Maar dat het spannend
wordt is zeker!

OpSchmùck - Oeloek
OpSchmùck is een voorstelling over te veel franje, overbodige
versiering, loze beloftes en alles wat de inhoudsloosheid in deze
wereld maskeert. In een tijd waarin alles verkoopbaar is en aan
de man gebracht moet worden, komt Oeloek met: nu al de meest
legendarische theater-mega-hit-sensatie van het seizoen!* (*Mocht
Oeloek op de één of andere manier niet aan deze beloften kunnen
voldoen, dan wordt het gewoon weer een avond vol absurde
situaties, bizarre teksten, verrassende wendingen, halsbrekende
toeren en een hoop zooi.) Oeloek bestaat uit: Kevin Jolly, David

Battle of the cultures - TSV Pro Deo
In de jaarlijkse Battle of the Cultures nemen Theatervereniging
NEST, Theatersportvereniging Pro Deo en Cabaretvereniging
Contramime het tegen elkaar op in een fantastische strijd der
titanen. Het beste van theater, improvisatie en cabaret wordt
gebundeld in een heuse theatersportwedstrijd.
Alle drie de teams zullen laten zien wat zij onvoorbereid en
volledig geïmproviseerd neer kunnen zetten. Samen met de
interactie met het publiek wordt bepaald waar niet alleen de
scènes, maar ook de winst naar toe gaat. Kom dus ook jouw
bijdrage leveren door suggesties te roepen, rozen te gooien en de
rechters uit te jouwen.

Higgs, stand up physics - Theater Adhoc
Higgs is a lecture performance by Jan van den Berg about the many
years’ hunt for the Higgs particle. Also called the God Particle. But
why, actually? Because it could destroy the world? Or change it?
And about Peter Higgs, the man who predicted the particle. But
also about CERN: a glimpse behind the scenes at the largest and
most expensive laboratory in the world.

A superenergetic, multidisciplinary show with dance, mime, acting,
moving images and live music.
‘Hunger’ is the new show of Fantasten. After moving and
impressive ‘Isolation’ / ‘Happy Family’ (Parade 2014) ‘Hunger’ is a
relaxed and dreamy performance about the beauty of our ‘sexual
drive’. A light-hearted research into appease our hunger for each
other, to the hunt, to the passionate love. With: Marle Brouwer,

weer doorgaan. Dat houd je toch nooit vol? Cabaretvereniging
Contramime is overtuigd van niet en vindt dat het anders moet.
Waar is de ontspanning, de lach en de ‘fuck-deze-shit-ik-kaphiermee’-mentaliteit? Bij Contramime zal je geheel re-energized

Deze musical is een rauwe, humoristische maar ook ontroerende
voorstelling over een vrouwengevangenis waarin de spanningen
tussen het personeel en de gevangenen hoog oplopen. De
tragische doch dubieuze dood van een van de gevangenen zet
de verhoudingen helemaal op scherp! Geregisseerd door Marike

hogerhand, samengevoegd wordt met een andere organisatie. Er
ontstaat onrust, samenzwering en verraad. Welke kant durft men
te kiezen en welke kant wordt er gekozen? Wie is er te vertrouwen?

In deze voorstelling nemen de spelers van Pro Deo het
tegen elkaar op. In gemengde samenstelling spelen ze geheel
geïmproviseerde scènes, die door het publiek met de o zo
belangrijke punten worden beloond. Elke speler verzamelt zo
individueel zijn punten. Aan het einde van elke ronde worden de
scores met elkaar vergeleken en zullen alleen de besten doorgaan
naar de volgende ronde. Wie valt er af? En wie gaat er door? Wie
wordt er dit jaar de winnaar van de Micetro?

Eindejaarsvoorstelling Cabaretvereniging Contramime
Na de voorstellingen van december en mei zal Cabaretvereniging
Contramime wederom het seizoen afsluiten met een voorstelling.
Het blijft nog even spannend wat voor voorstelling het zal zijn
maar een ding is zeker: het wordt een groot succes! Kom die
dinsdagavond genieten van een avond vol talent.

Bij het maken van een stuk komt veel kijken: het kiezen of maken
van een script, speelstijl, decorontwerp en ga zo maar door. De
spelers gaan ieder hun eigen avontuur aan en dragen zo hun
steentje bij aan de voorstelling. Wij gaan op zoek naar waar
theater mensen raakt. Niet zomaar een verhaal om het verhaal,
maar een verhaal dat het publiek anders naar buiten doet komen.

journey through space and time with the Scottish Symphony

Tom Waits in a New Coat of Paint - The More The Mary
Pianist Thomas Beijer alternates the most beautiful Spanish piano
music with stunning filming. In 2013 he went on a trip to Spain,
together with film maker Lucas van Woerkom; looking for the
perfect images to go with the music of Thomas’ favorite Spanish
composers like Albéniz, de Falla, Rodrigo and Mompou. ‘Canción y

On April 1st 2016, SHOT has been around for 25 years and
as each anniversary year, the former members of SHOT will
come together and form an orchestra. Together with the
current orchestra SHOT they will give a big concert in the

The Cyclic Night Show - 1721 Fusion Ensemble
1721 is a mutual creation of sisters Telalit Charsky (cellist and
singer) & Nuphar Fey (pianist and composer). ‘The Cyclic Night
Show’ is the first show of 1721, combining Tango and Baroque
music in new cross-genre arrangements, acoustic and electronic
music, and a narrative story-line connected to the music which
is expressed through the presence of an actor on stage and their
own performance in pre-filmed video art scenes.

1, 2, ,4 of de zoektocht naar de derde man - Hermitage
De muziekgroep Hermitage uit Vlaanderen bestaat 10 jaar en viert
dit op een bijzondere manier: de deur van de kluizenaarswoning
wordt voor het eerst opengezet voor ‘derden’. Externe krachten
die mee aan de schrijftafel zitten, impulsen geven en voor nieuwe
horizonten zorgen. Met als resultaat een fris en verrassend concert.
Een tipje van de sluier? De ‘derde man’ vond Hermitage o.a. in
Jeroen Zijlstra en cultfiguur Astrid Nijgh. Meer (grote) namen
mochten we bij het ter perse gaan nog niet vrijgeven. Maar er is dus
meer, veel meer.

Once upon a time in Enschede - Twents Studentenkoor
Once upon a time there was a small university in Enschede. The
students at this university decided to found a classical choir. In
“Once Upon a Time in Enschede”, Twents Studentenkoor (TSK), the
classical student choir in Enschede, tells the story of its existence.
Why does it exist? To sing beautiful music that touches people’s
hearts. Get just a hint of TSK’s enthusiasm at this concert.

Dansstage 2016 - Balkfolk Enschede
The Dansstage is an annual balfolk dancing event, encompassing
10 hours of workshops, three balls and meals. Balfolk dances are
mostly West-European and danced in couples or groups. Due to the
simple basis everybody can learn it and enjoy the whole event no
matter their past dancing experience, but there is lots of room for
improvisation and fusion and there are lots of lesser known dances,
so there will still be interesting workshops for advanced dances.

Open Ball Dansstage 2016
Balfolk is a dance evening (ball) with live folk music. The dances are
mostly West-European and danced in couples or groups. Due to the
simple basis everybody can learn it during the free workshop at the
beginning of the ball and enjoy the whole evening, but there is lots
of room for improvisation and fusion, so you can make it as complex
and elegant as you wish, so it never gets boring.

Mum’s the Word - Dance makers / Cecilia Moisio
Mum’s The Word, meaning to keep a secret and not to tell anybody,
is a performance about mothers and daughters. About the complex
bond that already starts in the womb, the secrets and the behavior
between mother and daughter. In a house full of memories these
personal stories are brought to light. Moisio challenges the
audience to reflect on the most basic form of love. Performers:
Arnica Elsendoorn, Soosan Gilson, Katarzyna Sitarz and Yulia
Kalinchenko. Chosen as their inspiration night by modern dance
production group Arabesque!

The Game - SDV Chassé
After the enchanting tale of last year, this year SDV Chassé brings
“The Game” on the dancefloor. An exciting story about a detective,

Dance Performance - Arabesque
In June, Arabesque will have their annual dance performance. With
this performance our modern dance association wants to celebrate

Taizéprayer. One hour of singing, praying, reading and

We start with a free meal at 18.00hrs. After dinner we’ll watch
a movie together and have a discussion about it afterwards.

Debbie paints in a direct, expressive and lively way large portrait paintings. What is striking is that the eyes of the people
put on canvas are all quite large, which gives it a kind of comic
effect. But also make them seem friendly. Almost as if they all

A fragmentary story about Antler Girl wandering through a dark
forest in search of herself, told on paper and canvas. The brooding atmosphere of the dank, deep, enveloping forest is further

Op 6 april mag Nederland naar de stembus voor het raadgevend
referendum over het associatieverdrag
met Oekraïne. In gang gezet door de Geen Stijl-lobby krabbelen we
ons straks met het stempotlood achter de oren: voor of tegen? Een
gemiddeld associatieverdrag telt 200 pagina’s juridische tekst. Is het
verstandig om burgers daarover te laten stemmen? Daar komt bij
dat Oekraïne een instabiel land is.
Dit debat geeft helderheid.
As the conventional computer is about to reach its physical limits,
scientists are looking for new ways of computing. Nature can be a
source of inspiration, since evolution resulted in the most advanced
‘computer’ of the universe: the human brain, capable of complex
and parallel processing. The evolutionary process can be simulated
on a microchip with gold nanoparticles. In half an hour they can be
configured to carry out computational operations.

Are we free to choose in matters of love? De Nederlandse Reisopera
will perform a very modern and straightforward version of the
classical opera Così Fan Tutte by Mozart. But how do you select a
work for an opera company? Which one is the best director, able
to make a fitting interpretation of the story? In short, what is
the making of this version of Così Fan Tutte? General and artistic
director Nicolas Mansfield of De Nederlandse Reisopera will tell us
all about it.

Hockeycoach Max Caldas wist in 2012 het dameshockeyteam op te
stuwen tot Olympisch
Goud in Londen. In 2014 slaagde hij er ook in om met dit team het
WK hockey in Den Haag te winnen. Hij wist een groep individuele
spelers zó te motiveren dat ze perfect samenwerkten en op precies
het juiste moment een topprestatie leverden. Hoe doe je dat? En
wat kunnen wetenschappers en studenten leren
van deze inzichten uit de topsport?

De toekomst van cyber
‘Cyber’ stamt af van het Griekse ‘kubernètikos’ en betekent besturen.
Cyberspace heeft ook alles met controle en besturing te maken. Zo
kan een chirurg op afstand opereren en kun je vanachter je laptop
shoppen of bankzaken regelen. Er zijn echter kapers op de kust die
met ‘phishing’-e-mail hengelen naar je wachtwoord of je computer
overspoelen met een datatsunami via een DDOS-aanval. Hoe koers
te houden op de woelige baren van cyberspace, dat is de vraag!

Sinds een half jaar is dr. Mirjam Bult vicevoorzitter van het College
van Bestuur, de eerste vrouw in het belangrijkste bestuursorgaan

Hiska Bakker van Studium Generale gaat haar interviewen over
haar werk - haar carrière, de plannen voor de

Ons brein is een wonderlijk orgaan. Tussen onze oren ontstaan
de mooiste én verschrikkelijkste ervaringen. Op de eerste
avond psychosen, waanbeelden die zich vooral openbaren bij
jonge mensen, in de leeftijd van studenten. Angststoornissen
daarentegen treffen mensen van alle leeftijden.

Je ziet, hoort, ruikt en voelt dingen die er niet zijn. Dat is de realiteit
van mensen met een psychose. Die waanbeelden worden soms
getriggerd door drugs, maar kunnen ook spontaan ontstaan.
Prof. dr. Iris Sommer, hoogleraar Psychiatrie en hoofd van de
Stemmenpoli van het UMC Utrecht, vertelt hoe je psychosen
herkent en wat je ertegen kunt doen. Zij publiceerde het boek
Haperende hersenen (2015).

Bang voor muizen, spreken voor publiek, fietsen, boodschappen
doen in de supermarkt, zoenen? En dan zo’n heftige angst dat je
er last van hebt in je dagelijkse bestaan? Angststoornissen komen
voor bij jong en oud en kunnen levens ontwrichten. Dr. Nienke
Vulink is psychiater en hoofd van de afdeling Angststoornissen van
het AMC van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Biefstuk uit het lab?
Met soja, water en een beetje rijst een product maken dat qua
structuur op vlees lijkt. Wat smaakstoffen toevoegen en voilà,
daar is de vegetarische biefstuk! Eventueel nog wat vitamines
en proteïnes erbij: dan is het ook nog een weldaad voor onze
gezondheid. De shear cell technology maakt het mogelijk om in
het lab iets te ontwikkelen dat sterk op vlees lijkt. Dat het milieu
daarmee gediend is, staat buiten kijf. Minder dieren betekent ook
minder impact op land, water en minder broeikasgassen.

Diederik Samsom - Bèta in Den haag
Met zijn achtergrond in de kernfysica is Diederik Samsom een
van de weinige bèta’s in de Haagse politiek. Welke voordelen
heeft het om een meer exacte kijk op de wereld te hebben? Voor
hij de Tweede Kamer inging, werkte hij voor Greenpeace. Hoe
realiseert hij tegenwoordig zijn duurzaamheidsidealen? En hoe
staat hij tegenover het sluiten van alle Duitse kerncentrales sinds
Fukushima?

Hartstilstand en coma
Een hartstilstand is een van de meest voorkomende oorzaken
van coma in Nederland. Slechts ongeveer de helft van de
comapatiënten herstelt, de andere helft wordt nooit meer wakker.
Artsen tasten in het duister over het herstel van deze patiënten.
Wat speelt zich af in hun hersenen? Op de UT is een methode
ontwikkeld die nauwkeuriger voorspelt of iemand uit een coma
kan komen of niet. De nieuwe
diagnostiek is hoopvol, maar roept ook ethische dilemma’s op.

Kanker te lijf
Artsen, onderzoekers en patiënten voeren iedere dag strijd tegen
kanker. Veel is nog onduidelijk: waarom leeft de ene patiënt met
dezelfde diagnose nog drie jaar terwijl de ander amper een maand
haalt? Dit Science Café laat zien hoe gezwellen groeien, wat voor
soorten kankers er bestaan en wat daar wel en niet tegen te doen
is. De dilemma’s van de arts komen ook ter sprake. Op de vraag
– ‘dokter, hoe lang nog?’ – kan slechts een statistisch antwoord
worden dat voor ieder individu anders uitpakt.

Soldatenverhalen uit WO II
Max Poorthuis, student Business Administration, ontmoette in
2007 in een hotelbar in Normandië de veteraan Bill Ryan. Die
vertelde hem over D-day, 6 juni 1944: hoe hij en zijn kameraden
van het Amerikaanse 16e infanterieregiment landden in Frankrijk
en de Duitsers versloegen. Dat gesprek leidde tot vriendschap
tussen de jonge Max en de oude Bill. Max richtte een digitale
herinneringsplek - www.16thinfantry.com - op, waarop hij
persoonlijke verhalen en foto’s van de soldaten plaatst. Daarnaast
reist Max elk jaar alle Europese begraafplaatsen af waar ‘zijn’
soldaten liggen en legt hij bloemen op hun graf.

Drones: the sky is the limit
Het gebruik van drones neemt een steeds hogere vlucht. Het
luchtruim vult zich met slimme apparaten die mensenmassa’s
in de gaten houden, hoge zendmasten inspecteren, snel een
defibrillator afleveren, een tornado van binnen bekijken of
vogels verjagen. Twente krijgt wellicht een drone-center, met
het vliegveld als proefterrein. Groot genoeg om ook flinke
vrachtdrones uit te testen. Dit symposium
belicht de nieuwste mogelijkheden, maar staat ook stil bij onze
privacy, veiligheid en hinder.

Kwantumbiologie
Trekvogels vinden hun weg via het aardmagnetisch veld. Maar
volgens de klassieke natuurkunde kán dat helemaal niet, omdat dit
veld veel te zwak is. Om het feilloze richtingsgevoel van vogels te
verklaren, is een beroep op de kwantummechanica noodzakelijk.
Zo ontstaat een nieuw vakgebied - kwantumbiologie - dat niet
alleen het kompas van vogels verklaart, maar ook waarom
fotosynthese zo efficiënt is. Het maakt ook duidelijk waarom onze
ogen zo gevoelig zijn voor licht en waarom cellen zo nauwkeurig
DNA kunnen kopiëren.

Wetenschappers weten vaak minder dan ze denken

Alle geweldige uitvindingen – ruimtetelescopen, hersenscans,
deeltjesversnellers – ten spijt, wetenschappers lopen
onvermijdelijk tegen de beperkingen van wetenschap op. Er zijn
zaken waarop de wetenschap principieel geen antwoord kan
geven. Toch wordt onze wereld gedomineerd door diezelfde
wetenschap, met getallen en voorspellingen over economie
of klimaat. Ronald Meester laat zien dat wetenschap zo haar
beperkingen kent. Niet alles laat zich in zinvolle modellen vatten.
Erkenning hiervan komt de wetenschap zelf ten goede.
