CHAPTER 6, LESSON 1:
SOLVE ONE-STEP EQUATIONS
An equation is a mathematical sentence stating
that two quantities are equal.
x+2=6
 The value of the variable is the solution of the
equation.
x=4

SOLVING AN EQUATION
To solve an equation, first you have to get the
variable alone on one side of the equal sign.
 This is called isolating the variable.
x + 5 = -7
Use inverse
-5 -5
operations!
X = -12

Check if your
answer is correct!
k - 15 = 11
+15
+15
k = 26
X + 7 = -9
-7
X
-7
= -16
11 = g + 16
-16
- 16
-5 = g
7 + y = 17
-7
-7
y = 10
-25 = -6 + m
+6
+6
-19 = m
USING A TAPE DIAGRAM
An angelfish can grow to be 12 inches long. If an
angelfish is 8.5 inches longer than a clownfish,
how long is the clownfish?
EXIT TICKET
Solve each equation. Remember to check your
solution!
1) 7 = y +2
2) q – 8 = -9
3) r – 4 = -2
4) -5 = b + 8
