The Europe 2020 strategy identifies the bio-economy as a key
area for smart and sustainable Europe development. Advances in
research and innovation will enable the sustainable management
of renewable bio-resources and the opening of new markets for
food and biological-based resources industry.
Bio-economy breaks down the traditional wall between agriculture and industry, building a new relationship between these two
worlds based on innovation and on the sustainable use of natural
resources for new industrial activities.
Bio-economy fundamentally changes the traditional manufacturing approach: no longer one, but several products from a single
feedstock. Bio-economy rests on two pillars:
1. A competitive agricultural system, of fundamental importance,
that produces raw materials in the form of biomass;
2. Industrial technologies, able to fully utilize the biomass to
obtain different products that can be placed along the segments of the pyramid of the value, such as, from the top to the
bottom, drugs, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, biopolymers, bioenergy.
