Perten Instruments,
soluzioni analitiche
avanzate
Il pet food deve avere un buon
aspetto, risultare gradevole per
gli animali, rispettare le richieste
nutrizionali ed essere prodotto in modo
economicamente sostenibile.
Le soluzioni a questi contrastanti
problemi comprendono anche l’utilizzo
di apparecchiature analitiche avanzate
P
erten Instruments coopera da molti
anni con i produttori di petfood e
dispone delle attrezzature adatte. Con
questi sistemi è possibile determinare,
in pochi secondi, parametri come
umidità, proteine, grassi, grado di
cottura dell’amido e molti altri.
• All’ingresso delle materie prime.

Ecco i parametri
normalmente e comunemente misurati: umidità,
proteine, grassi, amido, fibra, ceneri, zuccheri. Le
calibrazioni sono disponibili per una grande varietà
di materie prime e prodotti finiti. Tutti i prodotti
PET FOOD TECHNOLOGY & ANIMAL FEED
possono essere analizzati tal quale, siano essi
pellets, paste, fioccati o altro.
I prodotti possono essere: petfood secchi o umidi (cani,
gatti, ecc.); cereali (frumento, mais, orzo, avena, ecc.);
L’RVA consente
in olio.
secondo strumento Perten Instruments.

P
erten Instruments has worked
with petfood companies for many
years and has the necessary tools.
With these tools you will be able
to determine parameters such as
moisture, protein, fat and more
in just a few seconds. Our analyzers are fast,
accurate, rugged and easy to use, and typically pay
back their investment cost in less than a year.
Save money and improve quality
• At the raw material intake. A high and consistent
quality starts with having full control of your raw
materials. With a DA 7250 from Perten Instrument
you can determine the quality of all incoming
shipments, making sure that what you got is what
you ordered. An analysis only takes 6 seconds and
samples don’t have to be ground, so there is no
reason not to test every batch received to ensure
that moisture levels provide for safe storage and
to test ingredients for protein, fat and more to be
certain that you will meet nutritional requirements
in a cost-efficient way.
• Optimize drying. A too high moisture content
means a risk of fungal infection, but if the moisture
content is too low you are giving away product for
free. The DA 7250 makes it possible to determine
moisture content after the dryer, for immediate
adjustment of drying time and temperature.
• Optimize fat spraying. Using a DA 7250 you
will be able to optimize the fat spraying of pellets,
helping you to save money and meet the nutritional
requirements. As an analysis is done in seconds
and requires no sample grinding, it is very easy to
measure and adjust the fat content of the product.
• Finished product quality control. Even if you
have done everything right there are circumstances
that are difficult, or even impossible to fully control.
That’s why it’s imperative to verify that the finished
product is of the intended quality. The speed
and ease-of-use of the DA 7250 makes this very
convenient. Whether it’s dry or wet petfood, you
simply place the sample in the open-face dish and
analyze it. You don’t have to grind the samples,
and if you use the optional Disposable Dish Module
there’s no cleaning up afterwards, even when
analyzing wet petfood.
• What you can analyze. Perten Instuments
analyzers can take care of most of the analytical
requirements at a petfood plant. The following
are the parameters that are the most commonly
measured with our instruments: Moisture, Protein,
Fat, Starch, Fiber, Ash, Sugars.
Calibrations for these and other parameters are
available for a large number of raw materials and
finished petfoods. All products can be analyzed as
they are, whether they are in the shape of pellets,
pastes, flakes or other shapes like treats.
Dry and wet finished petfood (dog, cat, etc); Grains
(wheat, corn, barley, oats, etc); Protein sources (meat
meals, fish meal, oilseed meals, DDG, etc); Other
(wheat middlings, corn feed meal, wheat bran, etc).

Perten Instruments is an active partner with many
Petfood companies throughout the world. With
its speed, ease of use, and sampling flexibility, the
introduction of DA 7250 has opened many avenues
for savings, increases in processing efficiency, and
improvements in product quality for all sizes of
operations. An example is listed below:
Nola, a South African market leader company
processing agricultural raw materials such as corn,
soybeans and sunflower seeds into dog food as
well as a variety of consumer products, with a long
standing relationship with Perten. Beginning with the
Inframatic model in the 1980s, Nola has since added
Diode Array technology and enjoys considerable time
savings as it analyzes samples intact removing the
time consuming steps of grinding, sample packing,
and cleaning. Nola monitors drying time as well as fat
addition with their NIR instruments.
Over the years Nola has experienced several benefits
of their Perten NIR instruments. One example is the
optimization of dog food oil content. If the oil content
is too low the dog is not getting its recommended
daily allowance, but on the other hand a higher oil
content will introduce too many calories in the diet
and increase production costs. Using an Inframatic
Feed Analyzer, Nola is able to control the amount of
oil added to the pellets thereby making savings in
raw materials and ensuring the nutritional value of
each batch. The instruments are placed at-line and
thanks to the rapid analysis the operator can make
immediate changes to the process when necessary.
Another at-line application Nola is benefiting from is
the monitoring of the moisture content in the finished
dog food. The product is analyzed immediately after
the drying oven and the results provide information
on whether the oven temperature and drying time is
correctly adjusted. Too high moisture content means
a risk of fungal growth, whereas too low moisture
content means unnecessary drying costs and a lower
production yield.
With the Diode Array Nola analyzes both whole dog
food pellets and sunflower seeds, avoiding tedious
sample grinding. An immediate effect of this was that
the four employees who were working with sample
preparation were able to move on to other tasks that
create more value to Nola.
The ability of the Diode Array to analyze
inhomogeneous samples meant that Nola were able
to tighten their specification of oil in the soybean
press-cakes by one percentage point, thereby
considerably increasing the efficiency of their oil
crushing plant. In economic terms the advantages
were so large that the Nola management decided
to purchase a second Diode Array equipment from
Perten Instruments.
Petfood has to look good to
the consumer, to taste good
to the pet, to meet nutritional
requirements, and to be
produced in a profitable way.
The solution to these seemingly
contradicting requirements is
the use of advanced analytical
equipment
