Dear IS Modena families,
Welcome to the latest PYP newsletter.
Trips and visits from ‘experts’
As mentioned in the last PYP newsletter, trips and visits are very important ways of adding to the students’
learning and understanding of our units of inquiry. We have quite a few trips planned and on the calendar
now which is exciting and we have started to gather information for costings for the Grade 3 & 4 overnight
trip and the Grade 5 & 6 residential trips. Before the half term break our Grade 3 & 4 students travelled up to
Zocca to the Museo del Castagno as part of their inquiry into their central idea ‘People interact with, use and
value the natural environment in different ways.’ They had a fantastic time and learnt lots about mountain
lifestyle and the use of chestnuts for cooking.
Next week the Grade 5 & 6 classes will be travelling up to Milan to visit the Leonardo da Vinci Science and
Technology Museum. They will be looking in detail at the models of da Vinci’s designs as well as looking at

Denmark Day
Tomorrow we will be welcoming a group of Diploma Programme students from Langkaer School, near
Aarhus, Denmark. They will be coming in to work with our Grade 3 to 6 students introducing them to the
culture of Denmark through stories, songs, arts and crafts, drama and games. The DP students have
planned all of the activities as part of their CAS (Community, Action and Service) course, an important
element of the Diploma. We are really looking forward to welcoming them and learning more about
Denmark.
Supporting your child
Both the class teachers and myself are frequently asked by parents about how they can best support their
child with their learning.
Parents often get frustrated when they ask their child ‘What did you do at school today?’ and get the answer,
‘Nothing’! This is a very typical response from a child as quite often they want to leave school behind them
and forget about it until the next morning, in the same way that many adults don’t want to discuss their
working day but just come home and relax. However, as a parent you want to know what your child has
been learning about and doing in the class so here are a couple of websites that might give some ideas on
how to get your child talking about their day.

Another way in which parents can help their children is by supporting them with their homework. Below are
some websites with suggestions on ways to help students at home.

Homework is often a point at which battles begin and without realizing it or meaning to anxieties can be
created. For example it is important not to correct every spelling error in a piece of writing, unless it is
spelling homework, just pick out two or three key words to correct. With Maths, it is important not to confuse
the students by showing them the algorithm that you used at school but to work with what the child has
learnt. Also, as stated in some of the websites above make the Maths part of everyday life, while out
shopping do some comparing of numbers or addition of prices, look for 2D and 3D shapes while at home or
out for a walk. The most important thing to remember is that the teacher is not going to be angry if your child
does not understand their homework, it is better that you send in a note explaining that they didn’t
understand than you battling with your child or doing the work for them.
Upcoming PYP and MYP workshop
This Thursday Ms Forti, the MYP coordinator and myself will be running a workshop for prospective parents
to give an outline of what the PYP and MYP are. Parents who visited us for the recent Open Day have been
invited. If any of you have friends that are thinking about sending their children to our school but who haven’t
visited before please let them know about this workshop. We will not go into a lot of detail but we will try to
give them an overview of what the two programmes are about and what they look like in action. The
workshop will be in English and Italian. If you have friends that are interested please ask them to contact the
school office to let us know of their attendance so that we can make sure we have sufficient seating and
supplies.

Gentili Famiglie IS Modena,
ecco una nuova newsletter PYP.
Gite e visite degli ‘esperti’
Come menzionato nell’ultima PYP newsletter, gite e visite sono un importante modo per accrescere
l’apprendimento e la comprensione da parte degli studenti delle nostre unità d’indagine. Abbiamo alcune gite
pianificate in calendario, cosa davvero bellissima, e stiamo cominciando a raccogliere informazioni sui costi
per la mini gita residenziale di Grade 3&4 e per la gita residenziale di Grade 5&6. Prima della pausa di metà
trimestre, i nostri studenti di Grade 3&4 sono andati a Zocca al Museo del Castagno nell’ambito della loro
indagine sulla loro idea centrale ‘Le persone interagiscono, usano e danno valore all’ambiente naturale in
vari modi’. Hanno trascorso una bellissima giornata e hanno imparato un sacco di cose sulla vita in
montagna e sull’uso delle castagne in cucina.
La prossima settimana Grade 5&6 andranno a Milano a visitare il Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia.
Studieranno in dettaglio i modelli di Da Vinci e di altri.
Giornata della Danimarca
Domani daremo il benvenuto ad un gruppo di studenti del Diploma Programme della Langkaer School, vicino
ad Arrhus, Danimarca. Verranno a scuola per lavorare con i nostri studenti da Grade 3 a Grade 6 per
introdurli alla cultura della Danimarca con storie, canzioni, arte ed artigianato, teatro e giochi. Gli studenti DP
hanno pianificato queste attività quale parte del loro corso CAS (Comunità, Azione e Servizio), un importante
elemento del Diploma. Non vediamo l’ora di dar loro il benvenuto e di impapare qualcosa di nuova sulla
Danimarca.
Sostegno per vostro figlio
Sia alle insegnanti di classe che a me viene spesso chiesto come i genitori possono sostenere i propri figli
nell’apprendimento.
I genitori sono spesso frustrati quando chiedendo ai proprio figli ‘Cosa hai fatto a scuola oggi?’ si sentono
rispondere ‘Nulla’!. Questa è una risposta tipica dei bambini che spesso vogliono dimenticarsi della scuola e
non pensarci fino alla mattina successiva., nello stesso modo in cui gli adulti non vogliono parlare della loro
giornata lavorativa ma solo tornare a casa e rilassarsi. Tuttavia, come genitori volete sapere cosa i Vostri figli
hanno imparato e cosa hanno fatto in classe, quindi qui trovate un paio di siti che possono darvi alcuni spunti
per far parlare Vostro figlio della loro giornata.

Un altro modo in cui i genitori possono aiutare i loro bambini è sostenerli nei loro compiti. Di seguito trovate

I compiti sono spesso terreno di scontro e senza realizzarlo o senza volerlo si creano delle ansie. Per
esempio, è importante non correggere ogni singolo errore di ortografia in uno scritto, a meno che non sia un
esercizio di ortografia, limitatevi a due o tre parole chiave da correggere. In matematica, è importante non
confondere lo studente con le regole matematiche che voi avete imparato ma lavorare con le regole che lo
studente ha imparato a scuola. Inoltre, come indicato in alcuni dei siti sopracitati, mentre fate shopping fate
alcune comparazioni con i numeri o addizioni con i prezzi, cercate figure 2D e 3D mentre siete a casa o
mentre fate una passeggiata. La cosa più importante è ricordare che l’insegnante non si arrabbierà se
vostro figlio non capisce i compiti, è meglio che mandiate un messaggio spiegando che hanno capito
piuttosto che discutere con vostro figlio o che facciate i compiti al posto suo.
Prossimamente: PYP e MYP workshop
Questo giovedì, Ms Forti, la coordinatrice MYP, ed io terremo un workshop per le nuove famiglie per dare
un’idea di cosa siano il PYP e l’MYP. I genitori che sono venuti all’Open Day sono i benvenuti. Se avete
amici interessati ad iscrivere i figli alla nostra scuola ma che non hanno visitato la scuola prima, informateli di
questo workshop. Non andremo nel dettaflio ma cercheremo di dare un’idea generale dei programmi e di
come si realizzano concretamente. Il workshop sarà in Italiano ed in Inglese. Se avete amici interessati,
chiedete loro di contattare la segreteria per informarci della loro partecipazione in modo da garantire posti a
sedere e materiale sufficiente per tutti.
