Kirsti loves when her sister Annemarie tells

more bedtime stories to you?

Denmark has a king and Annemarie's
parents say they would die for him. Do you
think you would sacrifice your life if your
king's life was in danger? Why? Or why
not? And would it be different if your king
was a president, instead?

RESISTANCE
CHAPTER 2
In Denmark, there are people who are
fighting back against the Nazis, only they
do it strategically in secret. Do you think
you would have been one of the secret
fighters? Or would you have been too
scared the Nazis would hurt you or your
family? Explain your reasons.

JUST JEWS
CHAPTER 3
The Germans start ordering the Jews to
close up their shops. Nobody else. Just the
Jews. Can you think of any other group of
people who are treated poorly just because
of who they are? What do you think about
how they are treated? What do you think
about those who treat them poorly?

CHAPTER 3
If you found out that a group of people
was being treated poorly just because of
who they are, would you risk your life to

LIES OR TRUTH?
CHAPTER 9
Uncle Henrik says that he lied to
Annemarie to keep her safe. Do you think it
is OK for adults to do this, to lie to us in
order to keep us safe? What if they are
wrong and their lies will not keep us safe?
But what if we aren’t old enough or ready
to hear the truth?

CHAPTER 10
When Peter reaches for the Bible and reads
from the psalm, how do you think the
meaning of the song would have affected
the people at the house? And how does it
take on new meaning knowing that the title
of this novel is in the psalm that Peter
reads? What kind of stars could it be that
God is numbering?

CHAPTER 12
When Annemarie is waiting in Uncle
Henrik house for mother to return from
smuggling the Jews to Sweden, she thinks
that it is harder for the people who are

made all of your emotions in a jumble.

you don't think they worry about you, why
not? How does thinking about their worries

parents lying to her about her sister Lise’s
death? Was she too young to know the

HUMAN DECENCY
AFTERWARD
Write your thoughts about this soldier’s words:
“. . . and I want you all to remember – that you
must not dream yourselves back to the times
before the war, but the dream for you all, young
and old, must be to create an ideal of human
decency, and not a narrow-minded and prejudiced
one. That is the great gift our country hungers for,
something every little peasant boy can look
forward to, and with pleasure feel he is a part of –
something he can work and fight for.”
