Recognise them? Last month Echo’s previous editor Desiree van der Dussen and Lincoln Ellery, in front of family and friends in a most romantic little church in the Heathcote Valley, promised each other to share love and life together!
Desiree’s Mum Annie showed how happy she was by dancing with her grandchildren in tow while entering the church. Proud Dad Adrie is seen in the photo carrying his grandson around and keeping an eye on the proceedings.
It is so good to see that these sort of celebrations in close-knit families in our Dutch community are still taking place.
I think I speak on behalf of all the NSC members when I wish Desiree and Lincoln lots of health and happiness together!

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS
After careful deliberation in committee the members have come to the decision that the damaged house, situated at the front of the NSC property, 637 Marshlands Road, Christchurch, will be demolished.
The committee-members have looked at options such as repairing the house for private rental and altering the house into a cafe/shop.
The outcome was that demolishing the building would not only be preferable but eventually also financially be a better option for the Society and its membership.
A motion was put to the vote and the result was as follows: 8 for demolition 1 against 1 abstain Therefore the motion was accepted.
For those members, who are questioning the validity of this procedure: The NSC solicitor was consulted regarding the motion to be handled in committee and was instructed that this would be a valid act.

MARINA WIJLAARS PRESIDENT’s REPORT
It feels like the year has begun with a vengeance with big decisions looming.
Federation Constitutional Change
This was outlined in the November Echo. The proposal is that in the Federation’s constitution, societies and
‘other similar non-profit organisations’
will be able to join and the word
‘club’
will be changed to
‘affiliates’.
This change will allow The Dutch Connection (Ons Museum and Cultureel Centrum) to become an affiliate and any other organisation that has similar objects like the Federation Of NZ- Netherlands Societies Inc.
Feedback from clubs to the Federation excutive has been requested and needs to be submitted by the 15th of March 2014. We will be discussing this proposal at the next committee meeting. Please phone me if you have any questions or comments.
Painting
Another part of the club-rooms has had a make-over. This time Bob van den Berg, Property Manager, organised for the old expel-air fan to be removed and engaged Pete Knuiman to give the place a fresh coat of paint and varnish. It looks great!
Cleaners
Janice and Arie Geerlofs have agreed to keep the club-rooms clean. It is great to have two people with a history and connection with the club to undertake this work.
Golf Club
Work to the entrance of the Tee Block is in progress and a Portacom has been placed in the back area so as to house a business called Economy Golf which is run by Mark Ellery, who is a Professional Golf Coach and also sells golf equipment.
Social Times
During the NSC-Austrian Society’s combined Petanque and Luncheon afternoon I played my first game of petanque and I must say, I really enjoyed myself. A fun game (een gezellig spel) with plenty of time to chat; a bit of competitiveness on the side and plenty of fresh air! Thanks to all those who organised the day.
Carnaval
Only two telephone calls were received in response to the articles in the Echo so unfortunately this is not enough interest to go ahead and organise the Carnaval Dance this year. There were a few of us who would have loved to see this traditional event resurrected however we need support.
People Power
The Committee is still running with vacancies. We do need some additional people otherwise we run the risk that some of the more committed members heading for a burn-out.Please consider if you have some time available to join us in running the Society. _____________

ENTERTAINMENT REPORT
Dear Members, Thank you to the Petanque Club for hosting that Sunday session for NSC and Austrian Society members. And thanks must also be expressed to the Entertainment Team for serving the luncheon. Unfortunately I could not be there to land a hand as we were celebrating my daughter’s wedding and my husband’s 70th birthday during that weekend.
Someone has kindly lend us the DVD of the very popular TV series “Moeder, Ik Wil Bij De Revue” with many songs of Netherlands greatest ever ‘conferencier’ Wim Sonneveld. The series tells the story of the life and love of a son of a small village coal merchant from the south of the Netherlands.
The Entertainment Team will organise 2 Sunday afternoons to show this to our members. We have to do this during two afternoons as the total show takes more than 6 hours.
Both afternoons will start at 1am and have a ‘tea/coffee break’ halfway.
On Sunday, 13 April, the yearly Easter Market will take place at the Everglades with a visit of the Easter Bunny for the children. Produce stalls can be booked by ringing Jose Nijstad at 337 6151.
Further information will be published in the April issue of the Echo.
This year Koning’s Dag will be celebrated on Saturday, 26 April, with games and a repeat of the ‘Vrijmarkt’ for the children in the Everglades carpark.
This will be followed by a reception. Everyone is welcome. More information regarding this very special celebration will also be published in the next Echo.
On Sunday afternoon, 18 May, a Musical Variety Show, a combined event with the Austrian Society is in the planning. During this afternoon people who like to sing, recite a poem or play a musi cal instrument can perform their talents before an audience. More information closer to the event. In the meantime if you have any questions ring Yoka Saris on 384 9570.

TWO DUTCH MEN MIXED UP AT BIRTH MEET 60 YEARS LATER

Two 60-year old men in the Dutch city of Breda had an emotional meeting late last year after a DNA test proved they had been mixed up as babies and given to wrong mothers back in 1953.
Martino Kerremans and Jan Koevoets were swapped in the city’s Ignatius Hospital over six decades ago when each was handed back to the wrong parents shortly after being born.
“I can barely believe it,” said Mr Kerremans. “First you come to the frightening discovery that your parents have not been your real parents all these years. And then you also find your biological family. Incredible!” After both his parents had recently died Mr Kerremans, who was born on 3 February 1953, decided to act on his Mother’s half-joking claims that she had brought the wrong baby home. After the DNA test in November 2013 with two of his sisters he learnt that his Mother’s story was true, leading to a campaign by the local Omroep Brabant newspaper to solve the mystery by finding his real family.

ECHO Antoon Koevoets saw a picture of Mr Kerremans in the newspaper and noticed a strong resemblance to his own looks, with the additional knowledge that his brother Jan, who did not share the same appearance, was officially born on 4 February 1953, a day later than Martino.
He persuaded Jan, a barber, to take a series of DNA tests with Mr Kerremans and his sisters, leading to the discovery that the two men had been exchanged at birth.
“Based on the results, it can be assumed that the suposed substitution of the babies did actually take place. All results confirm that,” said a statement by Consanguinitas, the company which carried out the tests.
Jan Koevoets said that he was pleased that Anneke, the woman he had always believed to be his Mother, was spared the news because she had recently died.
“Fortunately she was spared this news because this is something, I’m sure, she would not have wanted to experience. There can be nothing worse for a parent than your child being given to another,” he said.
Usually I try to laugh everything away. But this is hard for me. Deep down inside, I would have much preferred that this had not happened. I had rather that Martino had not gone looking for his real fam ily.
“I always made the joke that I was probably the milkman’s,” he said. “I wish I could still joke but I cannot deny it anymore with this result.” “I’m confused, I have another biological family. But my old family is my family.” The hospital, which now operates under a different name, has apologised for the mistake that took place 60 years ago.
“Unfortunately, we cannot undo what happened in the maternity ward in early February 1953,” said a spokesman. “It is and remains a very sad story!” ______________

Thank you also to Pieter Wever for looking after us on the petanque court. We are sorry for interupting your usual peaceful Sunday game! But we all had a great time.
To the people in the kitchen, who took care of us ‘Thank you’ again. It was all very much appreciated.
And on top of all this the weather was so kind to us, making it a perfect day, on the 9th of February.

TER NAGEDACHTENIS VAN JAN VERHOEF
Vanaf de dag na aankomst in Nieuw-Zeeland zijn Jan Verhoef en zijn Ans leden geweest van de Netherlands Society Christchurch.
Toen ik hen gedurende die eerste dagen bezocht was Jan al druk bezig het oude huis dat ze gekocht hadden, te moderniseren. Het zag er goed uit en ook lag er al meteen een fundering voor twee flats achter in de grote tuin want zo groot was zijn enthousiasme. Jammer genoeg was de city council het hier niet mee eens en daarna heeft the CCC het leven niet makkelijk voor Jan gemaakt.
Jan en Ans waren niet alleen lid van de vereniging ‘op papier’ maar waren aanwezig bij elke bijeenkomst en zij stonden ook altijd klaar om te helpen als er iets georganiseerd moest worden.
Jan’s ingezonden brieven aan de Echo waren recht uit het hart; eerlijk en ook humoristisch. Misschien niet altijd door iedereen gewaardeerd, maar wel de waarheid en wij zullen moeten toegeven dat ‘eerlijkheid is heerlijkheid’. Dus Jan: Well done!!!
Jan heeft waarschijnlijk toen hij aan het einde van tunnel aankwam het heldere licht zien schijnen. Na het horen van een van Jan’s moppen heeft Petrus vast en zeker de poort wijd open gegooid om hem te verwelkomen. Dit is een droevige tijd voor Ans en de familie. Jan zal zeker een grote leegte achterlaten en daarom wens ik de familie Verhoef sterkte om samen dit verlies te dragen.

WHAT NOT TO DO WHILE MAKING OLIEBOLLEN!
In February I volunteered to make oliebollen for a cultural day at a local church, a fruit oliebol and also a chocolate chip version. I duly mixed 10kg of flour, 10 litres milk and 40 eggs and on top of that a rather large quantity of fresh yeast. We placed this mixture, devided in four large containers, in the back of the car together with deep-fryers; decorations; etc. and drove to the event’s venue. A mere 10 minute drive! But when we arrived there the mixture had risen out of the containers and was overflowing into our car and covering the back seats.
Despite the loss of a great deal of the mixture we still managed to cook solidly with 3 deep-fryers from 3.30 until 6.15pm. Every oliebol was eaten and enjoyed, they were delicious!
However there is a lesson to be learned: Next year we will use bigger containers or less yeast!

WHO ARE THE NSC COMMITTEE MEMBERS?

Marina Wijlaars:
My association with the Netherlands Society began with the involvement of my parents Trudo and As a teenager I participated (danced!) at Carnaval celebrations and went to family events organised by the Society.
In 1997 when my children were young I joined up with the Youth Folk Dancers. For many years I helped organise this group which performed all over the city.
Since 2006 I have been on the committee as Junior Vice President, Secretary and now as President.
I am married to Peter McGurk and together we have six children.
Three years ago I graduated with a Teaching Diploma and am now working at the Tamariki School in Woolston.
I am very proud of what the early migrants achieved and by becoming a member of the committee I myself hope to honour their selfless commitment and contribution to the Dutch community in Christchurch!

KLAVERJAS CLUB ‘ONS GENOEGEN’
Na de lange vakantie zijn we er weer klaar voor om met 2014 te beginnen. Maar ik wil nog even terug komen op de ‘Break-Up’ van de kaart club. Na een gewaardeerde lunch in het Sequoia Restaurant verplaatsten we ons snel naar de Everglades voor de jaarlijkse prijsuitreiking. Iedereen vroeg zich natuurlijk af ‘Wie is de kampioen van 2013?’ ‘Zit ik ook in de prijzen? Enzovoort! Dit jaar ging Corrie den Hollander met de eer strijken. Dat het haar gegund werd bleek uit het enorme applaus dat zij ontving van de aanwezigen.

Het Easter Tournement vindt plaats op Paas Zaterdag, 19 April in de Everglades. Het spel begint om 11 uur en de kosten bedragen $15.00 voor leden en $17.50 voor niet-leden. Om te reserveren bel me even op 352 5317. Verder wens ik iedereen een goede gezondheid en plezier bij het spel van het leven.

Everyone still seems to have a very pleasant time during the Friday gatherings. Either spending it playing Rummicup; Klaverjas or Golf. But if you prefer you can read a book and if you like the book you may take it home to finish it there and return it next time you join the YOY.
You might have read in the newspaper that Jan Verhoef has passed away. Jan has been a member of the Club for many years and did a lot of work within the Netherlands community. Jan was always ready for a joke and a good laugh. His humor was evident in his death notice in The Press: ‘Hier een bericht van Jan Verhoef: Vanmorgen vroeg heb ik voor het laatst in mijn luie stoel plaats genomen en helaas ben ik nu de pijp uit.’ After I read this I thought: ‘Yes, that is our Jan!’ Rest in peace dear friend!

MOEDER
door Yoka Saris Mijn Moeder is mijn vriendin maar ook bij tijd en wijle mijn vijandin geweest. Dit klinkt vreselijk onaardig maar toch denk ik dat mensen, vooral vrouwen, dit wel een beetje herkennen en zo niet dan hoop ik dat u toch kunt genieten van mijn ‘droevig’ verhaal.
Zoals velen onder u al wel weten uit mijn vroegere verhalen ben ik de dochter van een zeeman en een mooie vrouw, die het haar hele leven een ‘beetje hoog in ‘t hoofd’ heeft gehad. Dat wil zeggen dat zij ontzettend trots was. Haar motto was: Ook al ben je straatarm dan laat je dat nooit ofte nimmer aan de buitenwereld zien.
Mijn Grootvader (haar Vader dus) was een kunstenaar. Als hobby maakte hij zeer mooie schilderijen maar hij verdiende de kost voor vrouw en 14 kinderen als glas graveerder.
Ik heb hem nooit gekend omdat hij stierf toen ik nog geen jaar oud was. Maar ik heb een foto van hem en daar staat hij op als “Meneer de Dokter” want zo werd hij stiekum achter zijn rug genoemd door mensen in het dorpje, waar hij woonde, vlak bij Rotterdam. Op deze foto staat hij heel imposant in een mooi wit overhemd, met stropdas, zwarte broek en vest met zware horloge ketting en prachtig zilver-grijs haar. Hij kijkt met een hoogmoedige blik naar de camera, die gehandteerd werd door zijn zoon, die net een fototoestel had gekocht (een weelde in de dertiger jaren van de vorige eeuw) Grootvader staat buiten voor zijn behoorlijk landhuis achtige woning naast Grootje (zo werd ze genoemd) en een van hun andere zonen, die er nonchalant bij staat met sigaret in de mond. In de hoogmoedige blik herken ik mijn Moeder! Maar ik dwaal af want dit verhaal zou over mijn Moeder gaan.
Moeder was door haar huwelijk met mijn Vader heel vaak alleen, zo ook bijna zes jaar lang gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ze droeg in die tijd de zorg van drie kinderen geheel alleen. In 1944 toen wij, mijn acht jaar oudere broer en ik bijna bezweken van de honger (mijn oudste broer van 21 was toen ondergedoken bij de ouders van het meisje dat later mijn schoonzus zou worden) ging mijn Moeder aan de buren vragen om aardappelschillen om ‘het konijn’ te voeden. Dat konijn was ik natuurlijk want de dokter had mijn Moeder verteld dat ze moest zorgen dat ik iets te eten zou krijgen anders zou ik de volgende week niet meer halen.
Ik heb later gehoord dat de buren zich afvroegen wat Mevrouw Saris met dat konijn deed terwijl de rest van Rotterdam zich al vergreep aan ‘dakhazen’ oftewel huis-katten om toch maar een stukje vlees op tafel te brengen. Er was in deze verhongerende stad niets meer te vinden wat ook maar vier poten, een staart en twee lange oren had. Maar hierbij dus weer een voorbeeld van mijn Moeder’s trots: ‘Je ging toch niet tegen de buren zeggen dat je familie honger leed? Kom nou!!!’ Eind jaren ‘40 als we bij familie of vrienden op bezoek gingen en voordat Moeder aanbelde keek ze nog even vlug naar mijn gezicht dat tot lang na de oorlog vrij bleek bleef. Dan kneep ze vliegensvlug en heel venijnig in mijn wangen. Hierop protesteerde ik altijd heel luiddruchtig. Later vertelde ze mij dat ze dit deed zodat de familie geen medelijden zou hebben met die kleine bleekneus. Voordat de deur geopend werd had ik dan al een gezonde blos op de wangen waar al dan niet grote tranen langs biggelden.
In begin jaren ‘50 liep ik vaak als puber met Moeder door de stad. Zij was petite, donker en zeer aantrekkelijk. Ik was een lange, dunne blonde slungel, u kent dat vast wel: Zo’n meisje dat met haar lichaam nog niet echt raad weet. Vele malen als er een knappe jongeman aankwam siste mijn Moeder tussen haar tanden naar mij: ‘Recht op mijn dochter, er komt een officier aan!’ Dit was zwaar overdreven maar ze maakte er toch altijd een punt van om mij op mijn postuur te wijzen.

Als ik daar weer eens in opstand tegen kwam en juist overdreven ging slungelen dan wist ze met haar voet zijdelings uit te halen en mij een behoorlijke schop onder mijn achterwerk te verkopen. Dan stond mijn wervelkolom direct keurig verticaal en schoten mijn schouders van schrik overdreven naar achteren.
Zo wist zij ook altijd te vertellen hoe zeer ze andere meisjes van mijn leeftijd bewonderde om hun fysieke schoonheid en damesachtige manieren. Vaak probeerde ik wel om haar gelukkig te maken en deed dan bijzonder mijn best om op mijn manier ‘lady like’ te zijn, deed mijn pinken omhoog als ik een kopje vast hield bijvoorbeeld. Toch werd dat om een of andere rede nooit het succes wat ik er van hoopte. Ze vertelde me eens dat een van mijn vriendin nen zulke mooie ‘half geloken’ ogen had. Ja, heus, zulke woorden gebruikte ze altijd. Eerst heb ik snel in het woordenboek gekeken wat het betekende en toen heb ik zeker drie weken door het huis gelopen met half dichte ogen a la Marlene Dietrich. Totdat ik genoeg kreeg van overal tegen aan te botsen en heb het toen maar opgegeven vooral omdat mijn Moeder het toen ook nog in haar hoofd haalde om driftig tegen me uit te vallen met: ‘Kind, waarom kijkt je niet uit je ogen!’ Toen ik 19 jaar oud was emigreerde ik naar Nieuw-Zeeland met als enig doel om zo snel mogelijk van onder Moeder’s duim te komen. Ik moet er wel bij vermelden dat ik het eerste jaar in dit land haar dagelijks gefoeter vreselijk miste en zelfs ‘s-nachts droomde dat ze naast me stond en tegen me zei niet altijd met gefronste wenkbrauwen rond te lopen want dat zou rimpels veroorzaken later. Meestal schrok ik dan wakker en ging snel in de spiegel kijken en wreef een of ander goedkope gezichtscreme tussen mijn wenkbrauwen.
De oudere Nieuwzeelanders bewonderde wel mijn beleefd gedrag, het met ‘twee woordenspreken’ werd vaak als voorbeeld gebruikt bij de nogal ‘laid-back’ jeugd alhier. Mijn superieuren vonden het heerlijk om met Sir aangesproken te worden in plaats van Bill of hoe de man dan ook maar gedoopt was. Toen ik iets van mijn verlegenheid begon te verliezen heb ik eens gezegd tegen zo’n vervelende office manager dat het woord ‘sir’ erg veel lijkt op het Nederlandse ‘zeur’ wat dan weer vertaald werd als ‘bore’. Van die dag af keek die gladde jongen steeds over de rand van zijn brilletje om te zien wat ik bedoelde als ik hem enthousiast antwoordde met een ‘Yes, Sir!’ Ik zag mijn Moeder pas weer terug na 15 jaar toen zij en mijn Vader het gekozen land van hun dochter ook eens wilden verkennen. Ik merkte dat ik met, al mijn met de jaren verkregen zelfverzekerheid, toch nog steeds een beetje angstig was hoe mijn Moedertje nu over mij zou denken. Ik had nu wel drie zonen op de wereld gezet; hield het huishouden behoorlijk in stand (op een akkefietje na waarbij ik ons splinternieuwe huis per ongeluk in brand stak, maar dat is een ander verhaal!); verzorgde de adminstratie van mijn man’s bedrijfje en had daarbij ook nog een behoorlijk verantwoordlijke baan. Maar de vraag bleef hoe mijn Moeder mijn ‘uitstraling’ naar de buitenwereld zou vinden.
Op een dag gedurende mijn ouders’ verblijf bij ons vroeg ze mij om wat ansicht kaarten voor haar te posten naar vrienden en familie in Nederland. Nou ben ik echt niet nieuwsgierig....
nouja....niet nieuwsgieriger dan andere vrouwen. Maar toch las ik onderweg even wat mijn Moeder nu geschreven had aan haar vrienden: “..........Anton en ik kwamen aan op het vliegveld in Wellington. Nog nooit zo’n armoedige schuur gezien als deze aankomst-hal maar toen zag ik tussen al die wachtende mensen mijn mooie blonde dochter staan, een stralende lach op haar gezicht en nog altijd zo jong en slank als toen ze ons in 1958 verliet..........’ Ach....Moedertje.....nu alweer 30 jaar overleden. Wat ben ik blij dat ik die kaart las want nu weet ik dat ze me toch waardeerde. Als ik hier aan terug denk ga ik automatisch meer rechtop lopen!!!

STROOPWAFELS
You can’t visit or live in the Netherlands for long without stumbling across the famous stroopwafel. It sounds fairly medieval, but in reality it is a modern tasty treat. Stroopwafels are made from two very thin layers of baked batter with a caramel-like filling in the middle. Stroll through any busy Dutch market and you will smell these delicious confections long before you actually see them being made.
Ever noticed how a Dutch person places their stroowafel so that it sits perfectly balanced on their coffee mug? This is the traditional way to eat one, so that the rising steam from the hot beverage warms the waffle and slightly softens the inside, making it all yummy melty on one side and crispy on the other.
Stroopwafels are said to have originated in the late 18th century in the town of Gouda, made famous for its cheese. Be careful though as they are highly addictive. Take that first bite at your own risk.
Beware of the pre-packaged types of stroopwafels found at grocery or tourist stores. They may have sat on the shelves for months. If you enjoy the taste of sweetened cardboard and are not worried about losing any teeth then plunge right in! Otherwise head to your nearest local market (in the Netherlands) to find the real deal!
