Walkthrough of Reading Olympics roles— All Building Coordinators and teacher sponsors must be familiar with each of the following roles they may be asked to assume the night of the competition…

Team Leader

Moderator

Scorekeeper

NOTE TO ALL READING OLYMPICS TEAMS: Parents/guardians/guests should be instructed that they are not permitted to take photos or videos during the competition due to privacy concerns with the vast amount of students from dozens of schools.

TEAM LEADER

The TEAM LEADER escorts the team through all 3 rounds of competition and then to the AWARDS ASSEMBLY.

TEAM LEADERS may NOT provide any coaching, hints, gestures, or confirmations to the team during the rounds of competition. Providing such confirmations will result in forfeiture of the entire round (=0 points).

MODERATOR

The MODERATOR serves as the questioner and judge in one of the competition rooms. MODERATORS remain in the same room for all 3 rounds.

MODERATORS will not see their own school’s team(s) until the awards assembly.

MODERATOR’S DUTIES

Room setup – push chairs to the perimeter of the room. Students sit in a huddle on the floor and parents/guests sit in the chairs.

Teams have 20 seconds to answer question. If a team is trying to earn points AFTER the other team misses the question, they must answer immediately. There is no time for deliberation.

Remind parents that when students are conferring, it is important that the room remain quiet (i.e. no cell phones, no texting, if small children are disruptive kindly ask them to step into the hall, etc.).

Each team is permitted to have 12 students participate in each round. If a team has more than 12 students, the extra students will need to sit out the round (NOTE: teams may have from 8-15 students).

MODERATOR’S DUTIES

The first round will be slightly longer than the second and third rounds to allow everyone additional time to acclimate themselves to the competition format.

The moderator guidelines state that you must repeat each question and answer twice. Please use your judgment to decide if this is necessary.

If you finish a round early, please tell the teams to remain in the classroom until the announcement is made to move to the next round. This will prevent other rooms from being distracted by noise in the hallways.

MODERATOR’S DUTIES

If a MODERATOR witnesses a TEAM LEADER (or outside observer) providing hints/help to their team DURING THE ROUND, the MODERATOR will exclude that team from any further questions (=0 for the round), and the opposing team will receive the remainder of their 20 questions.

NOTE: Before round 1 begins, MODERATORS should shuffle questions for each individual round to make sure a variety of books are covered during the rounds of questioning.

SCOREKEEPER

The SCOREKEEPER uses the giant score card to record points awarded for each question. At the end of the round, the SCOREKEEPER totals each team’s points.

SCOREKEEPER’S DUTIES

Room setup – push chairs to the perimeter of the room. Students sit in a huddle on the floor and parents/guests sit in the chairs.

Teams have 20 seconds to answer question. Please assist the moderator with keeping time so the night runs on schedule.

Write each team’s score on their official score card at the conclusion of each round.

You will NOT receive a packet of the questions when you register. They will only be given to the moderators.

SCOREKEEPER’S DUTIES

If you finish a round early, please tell the teams to remain in the classroom until the announcement is made to move to the next round. This will prevent other rooms from being distracted by noise in the hallways.

AWARDS ASSEMBLY

AWARDS ASSEMBLY will be held in the Springton Lake MS gymnasium at the end of round 3. All students, teacher sponsors, and parents/guests are welcome to attend.

Ribbons awarded based on total points—all teams get ribbons!

BLUE RIBBON = 50 + RED RIBBON = 40-49 WHITE RIBBON = 39 and below

Caveats

On the night of the competition, each team is required to send two coaches. One coach will serve as a moderator or scorekeeper and the other coach will stay with the team during the competition. In case one of your coaches cancels, be sure to have a substitute ready to step in and assume the designated role.

 

The coaches are responsible for ensuring that all students leave the competition safely. Coaches are not permitted to leave the competition site until all students have been picked up.

 

During the competition, please do not provide verbal and/or nonverbal signals to your students indicating correct answers to the questions.

Caveats

MODERATORS and SCOREKEEPERS should make a “room map” of their assigned classroom so that the room can be easily re-organized after Round 3. Ask students participating in Round 3 to assist in returning the room to original set-up before going to the Awards Assembly.

EXIT PLAN: We will need to leave Springton Lake MS as quickly as possible following the Awards Assembly. To make sure all your students have a ride home, please arrange for your team to meet outside the building. Have a parent pick-up policy in place before the competition.

Caveats

 Please ENCOURAGE parents/guardians to attend the event and celebrate their children’s accomplishments.

  Please have your students complete the “Where’s My Olympian” card prior to the competition. Providing this information to parents ahead of time will allow them to quickly find their child on the night of the competition.  

Your students are your responsibility!
