Data Management Plans Tool, a community tool Todd Grappone Associate University Librarian, UCLA Trisha Cruse Director, UC Curation Center, CDL Roadmap • • • • • • History and driving forces behind the effort Discussion of the DMP and its impact Partner institutions and perspective Effort to date Timeline for moving the project foreword Discussion Overview of project • Goal: streamline the process to produce a credible and high-quality plan for managing data • Eight institutions coming together • Developing a flexible online tool, DMP Tool, to help researchers generate data management plans • Leveraging the work of the Digital Management Plan Online from the DCC • Tool will have multiple phases Driving forces behind the effort 1. Funding 2. “The alternative, a “go it alone” strategy, will only lead to dangerous isolation… yielding idiosyncratic, expensive, and ultimately unsustainable infrastructures.” 3. Leverage expertise(New Roles for New Times, ARL, 2011) 4. Allow researchers to focus on research (and benefit from managing data) The what and why of a DMP Components of a DMP The value of a DMP 1. Content Characteristics: the types of data, samples, physical collections, software… 2. Standards: the standards to be used for data and metadata format and content 3. Access: policies for access and sharing , provisions for appropriate protection of privacy, confidentiality, security, intellectual property… 4. Sharing: policies and provisions for re-use, re-distribution 5. Archiving: plans for archiving data, samples, and other research products, and for preservation of access to them. National funding agencies have data sharing polices Scientific journals (Nature, Science, and PLoS) have sharing requirements. Distributing research results may increase citations (Piwowar et al., 2007) A shared, common data set may help researchers collaborate and accelerate discoveries (NY Times, 2010). Sharing research products is increasingly important (Nature, 2009; Science, 2011). For the researcher: • helps organize data • cultivate quality and efficiency • help with preserving and sharing data Thanks to Jeffrey Loo, Chemical Informatics Librarian, UCB Levels of Collaboration – local Library Campus Data Centers Faculty / Researcher Sponsored Projects Office of Research Levels of Collaboration – beyond your own backyard Institutions Research programs Societies Federal Funding Agencies International NGOs A look at the DMP Tool • Will produce an editable document for submission to a funding agency • Phase 1 will provide foundation for future releases • Accommodate versions as funding requirements change • Open source -- bitbucket • Allows partner institutions to customize • An emphasis on delivering guidance and help • Four types of users / administrators: 1. 2. 3. 4. Researcher Editor Funder Institution 1. 5. 6. 2. 3. 7. 4. Select home institution -- routes users through their organization’s authentication gateway -- pick up branding 2. 1. HOSTED BY THE UC LIBRARIES THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA University of California Libraries Login screen will look slightly different for organizations routing users through their own authentication system. HOSTED BY THE UC LIBRARIES THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA University of California Libraries Home screen: once the user has logged in presented with a view of their work and options 1. 2. 3. University of California Libraries 1. 2. 3. University of California Libraries 1. 2. University of California Libraries What a researcher can do 1. Establish an account 2. View sample plans 3. Preview funder requirements 4. Create, save, edit, publish plan 5. View, use, past plans 6. Use help (generic and institution specific) 7. View news and latest changes User Type 1: DMP Tool Use Case – DataONE Researcher Editor’s Roles and responsibilities User 2: An Editor contributing to the DMP Tool • Primary role is to create and maintain funder templates • Create new funder • Create new plan (version) • Create question text • Create help screen text (as applies to questions) • Revise and edit • From a partner institution • Entrusted University of California Libraries An institution’s use of the DMP Tool User 3: an institution • A range of partners coming together in new ways, pooling expertise • • • • Libraries Administrative offices Data centers Faculty / researchers • Create and maintain relevant information LIBRARY SPONSORED PROJECTS OFFICE OFFICE OF RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER / IP • Resource links • Institution specific information and tools • Local help • Generate reports • Use the DMP Tool PROF. JIM CAREY, UC DAVIS UCLA’S NEWEST DATA CENTER User 4: a funder A funder contributing to the DMP Tool Initial funding agencies • Add news specific to funding agency – Changes to existing requirements – New requirements • Add resources about a specific funding program • NSF General • NSF Directorates • National Institutes of Health • Institute of Museum and Library Services • As partners request The DMP Tool Team Amber E Budden, PhD ([email protected]) Director for Community Engagement and Outreach, DataONE, University of New Mexico Tracy Seneca ([email protected]) Web Archiving Service Manager UC Curation Center, California Digital Library Andrew Sallans ([email protected]) Sarah L.
