NSF-funded researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles are examining oxygen levels in the brain in order to understand when we will and when we won’t decide to take a risk The San Jose State University Foundation, funded by NSF, is conducting 5 th grade classroom teaching experiments that will help inform best practices in teaching and learning basic algebra at the middle school level.

EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN CALIFORNIA

The California Noyce Scholarship program encourages outstanding students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at California State University, Fresno to begin a career in teaching by allowing them to gain experience assisting faculty in improving science and math courses.

Middle school girls selected to participate in an after-school and summer program in Scotts Valley work with adult female mentors in building interest and skills in computers and information technology (IT). The program helps mitigate the negative impacts stereotypes might have on girls' motivations to pursue careers in science and technology. The NSF-funded Revitalizing Algebra Partnership in San Francisco unites three groups — middle and high school algebra teachers, undergraduate mathematics majors, and graduate mathematics students who teach college algebra —with the primary goal of facilitating career advancement.
