Literature though the Lens of History A Pictorial History The Story of Little Black Sambo Bannerman’s personal view of her own artistic ability. Helen Bannerman, 1910 “I am in a bad cut this week, and my pictures are all byordnar bad, however I can’t help it, I must e’en send you what I can do, not what I should like to do.” Quoted from a letter sent from Helen Bannerman while in India to her children who were attending school in Scotland 1900 British printing Bannerman’s illustration of Little Black Sambo. Notice the difference in colour from the different printings. American printing Bannerman’s style of illustration is cartoonish. Her characters look most stereotypical when smiling. First Edition British Edition 1899 1900 Bannerman’s book was one of the first small sized book child friendly book, published two years before Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter Reissue version from the 70s – picture shows it’s size published by Frederick A. Stokes, New York. 1905 This was the first pirated edition of Bannerman’s work. There is no mention of Bannerman as author.
