AVIAN INFLUENZA
Avian influenza, or “bird flu”, is a contagious disease of
animals caused by “H5N1 virus” that normally infect only
birds and, less commonly, pigs. Avian influenza viruses are
highly species-specific, but have, on rare occasions, crossed
the species barrier to infect humans.
In domestic poultry, infection with avian influenza viruses
causes two main forms of disease, distinguished by low and
high extremes of virulence. The so-called “low pathogenic”
form commonly causes only mild symptoms (ruffled feathers, a
drop in egg production) and may easily go undetected. The
highly pathogenic form is far more dramatic. It spreads very
rapidly through poultry flocks, causes disease affecting
multiple internal organs, and has a mortality that can approach
100%, often within 48 hours.
From mid-December 2003 through early
February 2004, poultry outbreaks caused by the
H5N1 virus were reported in eight Asian nations
(listed in order of reporting): the Republic of
Korea, Viet Nam, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia,
Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Indonesia,
and China. Most of these countries had never
before experienced an outbreak of highly
pathogenic avian influenza in their histories.

HILTON SOUTH AFRICA
1. Avian flu infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. Avian
influenza, or bird flu, as it is more popularly known, occurs naturally
among birds but can also infect humans. One type of avian influenza,
called avian influenza A (H5N1), has recently caused infections in birds
in Asia and Europe and in humans in Asia.
2. Bird flu is not spreading in our country yet. No one has died from bird flu
and I think no one has been affected by it in our country.
3. Mutation of the virus has to occur for it to spread easily from one human
to another. This could happen when genetic material is exchanged
between human and avian viruses during infection of the same human
host.
4. Flu vaccines are made and administered annually based on the specific
viruses likely to affect the population that particular year. No one has
natural immune system to a virus vaccine to protect humans against the
virus. People take flu vaccines to prevent them from getting flu.
2. STIRLING PRIMARY SCHOOL SOUTH AFRICA.
1. Avian Flu is a deadly virus spread by birds.
2. Avian Flu was in our country a while back, in Out shoorn, in South
Africa. Avian Flu is not spreading in our country at the moment. Just last
week, scientist made it clear that there were no cases of the highly
pathogenic H5N1 Avian Flu virus in Cameroon, in Africa, our continent.
They also say that South Africa, our country, is totally free from Avian
Flu and we are planning to keep it that way.
3. We looked up on a site on google and found out that Avian Flu is not
anywhere in America, but is spreading in Asia, Europe, and Africa. If this
isn’t the information you were looking for, we’re extremely sorry, we tried
our best to cooperate.
4. Vaccinate the birds and to keep infected birds isolated. .We enjoyed
searching for the answers and thank you for giving us such an
interesting topic, we learnt a lot more about Avian Flu.

1. Avian or what we call H5N1Virus is a contagious virus which spreads out
through birds as carriers. The way it spreads is from bird to bird - bird to
human, through body's liquid

3. To overcome/eradicate the virus is that we must give vaccination to all the
birds/poultry which are still healthy and live near suspected area, and
unfortunately we must kill all birds/poultry that have already been infected by
Avian flu/H5N1 virus.

4. PHILIPPINES
Good day!!! Mabuhay ,
We are from the Philippines and it’s nice to be back working and knowing you once more. Our
class and Mrs. Seno are having fun of making answers to your questions. It’s our pleasure to
introduce ourselves, Adrian, Adeley, Concepcion Brando and Benjamin and here are the
answers to your questions.
Avian Flu usually refers to influenza; a virus found chiefly in birds, but infections can occur in
humans. The risk is generally low to most people because the viruses do not usually infect
humans. However, confirmed cases of human infection have been reported since 1997. Most
cases of Avian Influenza infection in human are thought to have resulted from direct contact
with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces.
The Avian flu is spreading in our country today. And there are 41 700 people died and infected
by Avian Flu (H5N1 Virus) in our country.
Most susceptible to Bird Flu are people working with fowl, swimming in infected rivers, playing
in an area where Avian cases were buried, or breathing air near a poultry processing plant.
Currently, Bird Flu is only known to spread to humans from contact with the feces or
respiratory secretions of infected birds.
The safest and the most effective Bird Flu Preventions are the following:
1) washing or cleaning our hands constantly,
2) cleaning our hands could be the key to avoid the common colds and influenza like the Bird
Flu,
3) to be effective, hands should be washed with soap from 20 to 25 seconds,
4) beside hand washing, eating right foods,
5) getting enough sleep and exercising help bolster the immune system and fight sickness.
5. MYANMAR
1. Avian influenza, commonly known as "avian flu" or "bird flu," is caused
by influenza type A viruses that normally only occur in birds. Avian flu is
very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds,
such as chickens, ducks and turkeys, very sick and kill them. These
viruses usually do not infect humans, but in recent years several cases
of avian flu infection in humans have been reported.
There are several subtypes of avian influenza A viruses. The subtype
that has become of major concern is avian influenza A (H5N1) virus
which has caused the deaths of millions of birds and also poses a
health risk to humans.
2. We are not sure. May be a few are infected.
3. Those who are suffering from ( ranging from fever, cough, sore throat,
muscle aches to diarrhea, eye inflections, pneumonia and severe
respiratory diseases )
4. Some prescription antiviral drugs may be effective
